Long-term health experience of jet engine manufacturing workers: I. Mortality from central nervous system neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: In response to an unusual occurrence of glioblastoma at one jet engine manufacturing facility located in North Haven (NH), Connecticut (CT), we examined mortality rates from central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms at NH and seven other company facilities. METHODS: Subjects were 223,894 workers ever employed in one or more of the company's eight CT manufacturing facilities from 1952 to 2001. Vital status was determined through 2004 for 99% of subjects and cause of death for 95% of 68,701 deaths. We computed standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) based on US and CT state rates and model

Neuropathology of human immunodeficiency virus infection at different disease stages.

The authors studied the brains of 471 adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1): 123 asymptomatic carriers, 127 in an early stage of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) with pulmonary tuberculosis or bacterial infections, and 221 in fully developed AIDS with opportunistic infections or neoplasms. Lymphocyte infiltration of the leptomeninges and of perivascular spaces occurred at all stages, but the frequency was significantly higher in asymptomatic carriers. Microglial nodules appeared at all stages of disease; they were not an early indicator of HIV encephalitis (

Low incidence of second neoplasms among children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after 1983.

Second malignant neoplasms are a serious complication after successful treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). With improvement in survival, it is important to assess the impact of contemporary risk-based therapies on second neoplasms in ALL survivors. A cohort of 8831 children diagnosed with ALL and enrolled on Children's Cancer Group therapeutic protocols between 1983 and 1995 were observed to determine the incidence of second neoplasms and associated risk factors. The median age at diagnosis of ALL was 4.7 years. The cohort had accrued 54 883 person-years of follow-up. Si

Neuropathology of pediatric brain tumors.

Pediatric central nervous system neoplasms include a spectrum of both glial and nonglial tumors that differ significantly in location and biological behavior from those of adults. Brain tumors in infants and children most often arise from central neuroepithelial tissue, whereas a significant number of adult tumors arise from central nervous system coverings (e.g., meningioma), adjacent tissue (e.g., pituitary adenoma), or metastases. Most adult brain tumors are supratentorial malignant gliomas, whereas the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor is the cerebellar primitive neuroectodermal

Magnetic resonance imaging features of canine intracranial neoplasia.

Although histologic examination following stereotactic or surgical brain biopsy is required for definitive antemortem diagnosis of intracranial neoplasms, these tumors are often associated with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features that warrant a presumptive or prioritized differential diagnosis. The MR imaging features of common canine central nervous system (CNS), adenohypophyseal, and metastatic intracranial neoplasms are reviewed. Characterization of neoplasms by histologic type and biological grade is based on the 2007 World Health Organization classification system for CNS tumors in h

Pineal Gland Tumors: A Review.

The pineal gland is a small, pinecone-shaped endocrine gland that participates in the biological rhythm regulation of vertebrates. The recognized major product of the pineal gland is melatonin-a multifunctional endogenous indoleamine. Accumulating evidence suggests that the pineal gland is important for preserving ideal health conditions in vertebrate. Tumors of the pineal region account for approximately 3-11% of pediatric brain neoplasms but fewer than 1% of brain neoplasms in adults. It is fundamental to expand advanced imaging techniques together with both clinical and laboratory knowledge

The specificity of ultrasound in the detection of fetal intracranial tumors.

AIMS: To evaluate the specificity of ultrasound in identifying fetal brain neoplasms and its accuracy in the diagnosis of the tumor's histological type. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of 7 cases of fetal brain tumors occurred at our unit in the period between January 92 and June 98 has been performed. All prenatal ultrasonographic diagnoses were compared with the postnatal findings on the aborted fetuses (post-mortem examination) or on the newborns (MRI or post-mortem examination). RESULTS: In 6 out of 7 cases the antenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of brain tumor was confirmed postnat

Pitfalls in the diagnosis of brain tumours.

Establishing the diagnosis of a brain tumour is not always a straightforward process. Many non-neoplastic neurological diseases can mimic brain neoplasms on neuroimaging or on histological examination, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, pyogenic abscess, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, cysticercosis, fungal infections, syphilis, sarcoidosis, Behçet disease, radiation necrosis, venous thrombosis, and others. Conversely, several types of brain neoplasms, such as glioblastomas, low-grade gliomas, CNS lymphomas, and brain metastases, can present in the absence of typical tumefactive lesions, posin

Growth fraction in human brain tumors defined by the monoclonal antibody Ki-67.

The monoclonal antibody Ki-67, which reacts with cells in the active part of the cell cycle, was used to evaluate immunocytochemically the growth fraction in 22 primary brain neoplasms. The percentage of labelled cells reflected the histological grade of malignancy of each neoplasms. High percentage of Ki-67-positive cells were observed in one choroid plexus carcinoma (60%), one primary melanoma of meninges (40%), three medulloblastomas (40%-50%), one anaplastic astrocytoma and six glioblastomas (10%-40%). One ependymoma had 7% positive cells. Rare positive cells (1%) were present in one piloc

Adrenocortical carcinoma with cerebral metastasis in a child: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is rare in the pediatric population, and brain metastasis seldom occurs. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The authors report a case of metastatic ACC to the brain in a 9-year-old patient who had an adrenal cortex neoplasm removed at 4 years of age, and was free of symptoms for 5 years. Two weeks before admission she complained of blurred vision in both eyes. INTERVENTION: Examination revealed bilateral papilledema, and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a mass in the left lateral ventricle with extensive vasogenic edema and

[Cysticercosis of the fourth ventricle simulating a posterior fossa neoplasm in cerebral scintillography. Report of a case].

The case of a twelve year old child with intracerebral hypertension and cerebellar syndrome in whom the neuroradiological and neurological examinations were suggestive of posterior cranial fossa tumor is reported. The brain scan depicted the scintigraphic pattern of midline neoplasms, most likely medulloblastoma or astrocytoma. At surgery a Cysticercus cellulosae was removed from the fourth ventricle. The authors suggest that in geographical areas with high prevalence of neurocysticercosis in the infantile population the hypothesis of the pseudotumoral form of the disease be remembered when on

Tumoral parkinsonism-Parkinsonism secondary to brain tumors, paraneoplastic syndromes, intracranial malformations, or oncological intervention, and the effect of dopaminergic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary tumoral parkinsonism is a rare phenomenon that develops as a direct or indirect result of brain neoplasms or related conditions. OBJECTIVES: The first objective was to explore to what extent brain neoplasms, cavernomas, cysts, paraneoplastic syndromes (PNSs), and oncological treatment methods cause parkinsonism. The second objective was to investigate the effect of dopaminergic therapy on the symptomatology in patients with tumoral parkinsonism. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted in the databases PubMed and Embase. Search terms like "secondary parki

The clinical and radiological evaluation of primary brain tumors in children, Part I: Clinical evaluation.

In Part I of this article, we present our data collected over the past 8 years on the clinical evaluations of pediatric brain tumors with an emphasis placed on the more common neoplasms. Our data consists of 385 children ranging in age from newborn to 18 years. The majority of children presented with signs of raised intracranial pressure (including nausea, vomiting, and headaches), seizures or other focal neurologic deficits. Five percent of our children presented to outlying hospitals with symptoms that retrospectively turned out to be due to brain neoplasms but were misdiagnosed as "gastroen

Adult extra-axial brain tumors.

Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred cross-sectional imaging study for the evaluation of nearly all extra-axial brain tumors in adults. This article outlines the neoplasms by their pathology. The discussion covers the neoplasms originating from central neuroglial cells, meninges, and cranial nerves. In addition, developmental tumors and cysts and secondary extra-axial tumors are discussed.

Poorly Differentiated Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of Unknown Primary with Metastasis to the Testis: A Case Report.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare epithelial neoplasms with neuroendocrine differentiation. Few cases of primary testicular poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (PD-NECs) have been reported, and secondary testicular neoplasms are rare. A 61-year-old man with a chief complaint of left testicular swelling was referred to our hospital. An orchiectomy was performed in order to determine the pathological diagnosis. Pathological examination showed diffuse sheets of highly atypical cells that were positive for neuroendocrine markers and a Ki-67 proliferation index of 80%. The patient was d

Revision of the World Health Organization classification of brain tumors for childhood brain tumors.

A classification for childhood brain tumors based upon revision of nomenclature of all brain tumors published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1979 is proposed. Applicability of the WHO classification scheme was tested in a combined study of the clinical and pathologic features of approximately 3300 brain tumors in children. It was found to be adequate for many of the neoplasms but unsuitable for a significant proportion, including a number of complex cerebral tumors for which there was no appropriate name. Nomenclature of poorly differentiated or densely cellular neuroepithelial tumo

Renal transplacental carcinogenicity of 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene in rats: relationship of renal mesenchymal tumor to congenital mesoblastic nephroma and intralobar nephrogenic rests.

Exposure of rat embryos to 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT) results in numerous malformations, but the urogenital system is not affected. In contrast, exposure of rat fetuses to DMPT has been reported to result in renal neoplasms, which were not further classified. To better understand this discrepancy in organotropism of the teratogenic and transplacental carcinogenic processes, the present study was undertaken to characterize the neoplasms induced in rat fetuses exposed to DMPT in utero. Renal neoplasms and persistent mesenchyme were observed in 19.2 and 11.5%, respectively, of the offsp

A rare case of metastatic solitary fibrous tumor of the pancreas manifesting as a cystic neoplasm: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that typically arises from the pleura. Although it may appear in other organs, it rarely develops in the pancreas. We report herein a rare case of metastatic SFT of the pancreas originating from an intracranial tumor and subsequently identified as a cystic neoplasm of the pancreas. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman with a past medical history of brain tumor visited the hospital for further investigation of a cystic tumor in the pancreas tail. Abdominal imaging showed a heterogeneously enhancing mass that was initially s

Primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma with brain metastases in a paediatric patient: an unusual presentation.

Primary lung neoplasms are rare in children. The most common primary lung malignancies in children are pleuropulmonary blastoma and carcinoid tumour. Synovial sarcoma (SS) accounts for approximately 1% of all childhood malignancies. In absolute terms, the SS of the lungs and pleura are extremely rare and pose a diagnostic difficulty. Soft tissue sarcomas usually have a high potential for metastases, however, metastasis to the brain is rare, even in widely disseminated disease, and it has been described only in 3 case reports previously. Primary pleuropulmonary SS with brain metastases is even
