Interaction of click intensity and cochlear hearing loss on auditory brain stem response wave V latency.

Auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) to 95, 80, 60, 40, and 30 dB nHL clicks were retrospectively studied from 103 patients (194 ears) with various degrees of cochlear impairment. Hearing loss and sample size were balanced across gender. Results indicate that the slope of the wave V latency versus 4000 Hz hearing loss function doubles as click intensity is decreased from 80 (0.01 msec/dB HL) to 60 nHL (0.02 msec/dB HL). Overall results indicate a slope increase of 0.0004 msec for each decibel decrease in click intensity from 95 to 30 dB nHL. Intersubject variability increased with increased he

Noninvasive ultrashort wave neuromodulation enhances glymphatic clearance to alleviate traumatic brain edema and Alzheimer's pathology.

The glymphatic system clears cerebral waste, yet strategies to enhance its function remain elusive. Here, we show that 40.68 MHz ultrashort wave (USW) rapidly enhances glymphatic bulk flow in healthy mice within 10 minutes. USW potentiates both glymphatic influx and efflux, concomitant with increased Delta wave neuronal synchronization, as confirmed by local field potentials and electroencephalograms. Chemogenetic silencing confirms that USW-driven glymphatic enhancement depends on neuronal activity, while pharmacological blockade of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) abolishes the effects, revealing dual rel

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Alters Hippocampal Sharp-Wave Ripple Properties: Implications in Memory Impairments.

A large body of evidence has shown that sharp wave ripples (SWRs), highly synchronized oscillations of the local field potential (LFP) in the CA1 pyramidal layer of the hippocampus, play a prominent role in memory consolidation. SWRs typically occur in periods of non-REM sleep, but have also been observed during awake rest periods of animals engaged in cognitive tasks. These events have been observed in rodents, non-human primates, and humans, suggesting they are evolutionarily conserved and contribute to memory formation. Numerous neurological diseases and insults, including traumatic brain i

Multimodal assessment of the effects of radial pressure wave therapy on spastic muscles in patients with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVES: Radial pressure wave therapy (rPWT) has shown promise in reducing spastic symptoms; however, its application in patients with spasticity following traumatic brain injury, particularly in those with prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDoC), remains underreported. The study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of rPWT on spastic muscles in patients with TBI-associated pDoC. METHODS: Ten patients with pDoC and upper limb spasticity and ten healthy controls received a single session of rPWT (2.5 Bar, 2000 shots) to the biceps brachii. Assessments were conducted at four time p

Triangular Wave tACS Improves Working Memory Performance by Enhancing Brain Activity in the Early Stage of Encoding.

Working memory is an executive memory process that includes encoding, maintenance, and retrieval. These processes can be modulated by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with sinusoidal waves. However, little is known about the impact of the rate of current change on working memory. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of two types of tACS with different rates of current change on working memory performance and brain activity. We applied a randomized, single-blind design and divided 81 young participants who received triangular wave tACS, sinusoidal wave tACS, or

Meningeal Damage and Interface Astroglial Scarring in the Rat Brain Exposed to a Laser-Induced Shock Wave(s).

In the past decade, signature clinical neuropathology of blast-induced traumatic brain injury has been under intense debate, but interface astroglial scarring (IAS) seems to be convincing. In this study, we examined whether IAS could be replicated in the rat brain exposed to a laser-induced shock wave(s) (LISW[s]), a tool that can produce a pure shock wave (primary mechanism) without dynamic pressure (tertiary mechanism). Under certain conditions, we observed astroglial scarring in the subpial glial plate (SGP), gray-white matter junctions (GM-WM), ventricular wall (VW), and regions surroundin

Non-invasive optical monitoring of the newborn piglet brain using continuous-wave and frequency-domain spectroscopy.

We have used continuous-wave (CW) and frequency-domain spectroscopy to investigate the optical properties of the newborn piglet brain in vivo and non-invasively. Three anaesthetized, intubated, ventilated and instrumented newborn piglets were placed into a stereotaxic instrument for optimal experimental stability, reproducible probe-to-scalp optical contact and 3D adjustment of the optical probe. By measuring the absolute values of the brain absorption and reduced scattering coefficients at two wavelengths (758 and 830 nm), frequency-domain spectroscopy provided absolute readings (in contrast

Focal Shock Waves Increase Efficacy and Prolong the Effect of Botulinum Toxin on Spasticity in Patients With Brain Injury From Stroke and Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to assess the effects on spasticity reduction of the association between focal extracorporeal shock wave therapy and botulinum toxin type A, versus the toxin only in brain injury patients. DESIGN: Eighteen patients were included. The study had two phases: the first phase was observational, and botulinum toxin type A was used. The second was a prospective, deliberate intervention phase in which the toxin was injected and focal extracorporeal shock wave treatment was added (1 sessions/week, for 3 wks). The patients were followed up in the 1st, 4th, and 6th mon

Cerebrovascular Responses in a Patient with Lundberg B Waves Following Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Assessed with a Novel Non-Invasive Brain Pulse Monitor: A Case Report.

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) can trigger a range of poorly understood cerebrovascular responses that may play a role in delayed cerebral ischemia. The brain pulse monitor is a novel non-invasive device that detects a brain photoplethysmography signal that provides information on intracranial pressure (ICP), compliance, blood flow and tissue oxygen saturation. We monitored the cerebrovascular responses in a patient with Lundberg B waves following a SAH. The patient presented with a Fischer grade 4 SAH that required urgent left posterior communicating artery aneurysm coiling and ventricular dr

Local brain tissue pressure monitoring based on subharmonic-assisted pressure estimation combined with shear wave elastography.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of mortality and disability among young people. There is an urgent clinical need for a noninvasive method that can accurately measure the local pressure in damaged brain tissue, which is of great significance for real-time monitoring of TBI progression, timely intervention, and improving the survival rate of TBI patients. METHODS: We proposed a noninvasive local brain tissue pressure (BTP) measurement technique combining subharmonic-assisted pressure estimation (SHAPE) and shear wave elastography (SWE) in a craniectomy rat model. Personalized pulse wave propagation modeling to improve vasopressor dosing management in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

This study investigates whether examining the shape of arterial pulse waves and fitting to them a physiology-based mathematical model of pulse wave propagation can provide additional insights into the state of the cardiovascular system in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), potentially enhancing vasopressor dosing strategies. We conducted a longitudinal study on 25 sTBI patients in an intensive care unit. Arterial pulse waves were recorded non-invasively from wrists and ankles using an oscillometric method and were used to inform a 0-1D model of the arterial blood flow dynamics.

The effect of a spinal thrust manipulation's audible pop on brain wave activity: a quasi-experimental repeated measure design.

INTRODUCTION: High velocity thrust manipulation is commonly used when managing joint dysfunctions. Often, these thrust maneuvers will elicit an audible pop. It has been unclear what conclusively causes this audible sound and its clinical meaningfulness. This study sought to identify the effect of the audible pop on brainwave activity directly following a prone T7 thrust manipulation in asymptomatic/healthy subjects. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental repeated measure study design in which 57 subjects completed the study protocol. Brain wave activity was measured with the Emotiv EPOC+, whi

ICP wave morphology as a screening test to exclude intracranial hypertension in brain-injured patients: a non-invasive perspective.

Intracranial hypertension (IH) is a life-threating condition especially for the brain injured patient. In such cases, an external ventricular drain (EVD) or an intraparenchymal bolt are the conventional gold standard for intracranial pressure (ICPi) monitoring. However, these techniques have several limitations. Therefore, identifying an ideal screening method for IH is important to avoid the unnecessary placement of ICPi and expedite its introduction in patients who require it. A potential screening tool is the ICP wave morphology (ICPW) which changes according to the intracranial volume-pres

Brain wave behavior in children with down syndrome following cortical neuromodulation combined with sensorimotor stimulation: observational study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) require more time to develop motor and/or cognitive skills. Neuromodulation is used to assist in this development. However, there is a gap in the literature on neurophysiological changes that may occur in the primary motor cortex in individuals with DS following neuromodulation. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate possible neurophysiological changes in brain wave behavior of the primary motor cortex following the administration of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation combined with sensorimotor training. METHODS: The study invo

Neural mechanisms underlying immediate and final action goals in object use reflected by slow wave brain potentials.

Event-related brain potentials were used to study the neural mechanisms underlying goal-directed object use distinguishing between processes supporting immediate and final action goals during action planning and execution. Subjects performed a grasping and transportation task in which actions were cued either with the immediate action goal (the part of the object to grasp) or with the final action goal of the movement (the end position for transportation). Slow wave potentials dissociated between processes supporting immediate and final goals: reaching for the object was accompanied by the dev

Acoustic enhancement of slow wave sleep improves memory retention by coordinating brain oscillatory rhythms and autonomic activity.

The interplay between sleep slow oscillations (SOs), spindles, and autonomic activity is thought to be crucial for sleep-dependent memory consolidation, yet the precise mechanisms remain unclear. In this randomized, single-blind, crossover study of 20 healthy young adults (25 ± 4 years, 75% female), we investigated whether one night of closed-loop acoustic stimulation of sleep slow waves during non-rapid eye movement sleep stages 2 and 3 enhanced memory retention at a paired word-associates task by modulating these neural and autonomic processes, compared to a sham condition. We found that mem

Typical Spike-and-Wave Activity in Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury and its Implications for Classifying Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus.

INTRODUCTION: Typical spike-and-wave activity (TSWA) in the electroencephalogram (EEG) indicates idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). IGE-related nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is typically an absence status epilepticus (ASE). ASE and TSWA respond dramatically to benzodiazepines. Patients with no history of seizure/epilepsy may develop ASE "de novo" in the context of an acute brain disorder. However, we are aware of only one previous case of de novo ASE with TSWA in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man, with congestive heart failure and history of sub
