Induced responses to insect herbivory are a common phenomenon in the plant kingdom. So far, induced responses have mostly investigated in aerial plant parts. Recently it was found that root herbivore may also elicit both local and systemic responses affecting aboveground herbivores and their natural enemies. Using broccoli (Brassica oleracea subsp. italica L.) and turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa L.), two cultivated brassicaceaous plants differing in their chemistry and morphology, we analysed the local and systemic induced responses triggered by Delia radicum L. damage, JA and SA application

• A hallmark of the innate immune system of plants is the biosynthesis of low-molecular-weight compounds referred to as secondary metabolites. Tryptophan-derived branch pathways contribute to the capacity for chemical defense against microbes in Arabidopsis thaliana. • Here, we investigated phylogenetic patterns of this metabolic pathway in relatives of A. thaliana following inoculation with filamentous fungal pathogens that employ contrasting infection strategies. • The study revealed unexpected phylogenetic conservation of the pathogen-induced indole glucosinolate (IG) metabolic pathway, inc

The prevalence of overweight and obesity has progressively increased in the last few years, becoming a real threat to healthcare systems. To date, the clinical management of body weight gain is an unmet medical need, as there are few approved anti-obesity drugs and most require an extensive monitoring and vigilance due to risk of adverse effects and poor patient adherence/persistence. Growing evidence has shown that the gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and, therefore, H2S-donors could have a central role in the prevention and treatment of overweight/obesity. The main natural sources of H

BACKGROUND: Vandenboschia radicans and its close relatives are difficult to distinguish based on morphological characteristics because of reticulate evolution within the complex. Therefore, cytological and molecular approaches have been proposed for accurate identification of taxa within this complex. However, conventional plastid markers lack sufficient discriminatory power at the species level. In Korea, the V. radicans complex comprises nine genotypes associated with varying ploidy levels and hybrid origins. The maternal genotypes are classified into three groups: α, β, and γ. In this study

Neurological disorders incidences are increasing drastically due to complex pathophysiology, and the nonavailability of disease-modifying agents. Several attempts have been made to identify new potential chemicals to combat these neurological abnormalities. At present, complete abolishment of neurological diseases is not attainable except for symptomatic relief. However, dietary recommendations to help brain development or improvement have increased over the years. In recent times, cruciferous vegetables and their phytochemicals have been identified from preclinical and clinical investigations

CONTEXT: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death globally, responsible for over 17 million (31%) deaths in the world. Novel pharmacological interventions may be needed given the high prevalence of CVD.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to find potential new sources of cardiovascular (CV) drugs from phylogenetic and pharmacological analyses of plant species that have experimental and traditional CV applications in the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reconstructed the molecular phylogeny of these plant species and mapped their pharmacological mechanisms of action o

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Despite being highly fertile and occupying a large geographic region, the North American heartleaf bittercress (Cardamine cordifolia; Brassicaceae) has a puzzling triploid-like chromosome number (2n = 3x = 24). As most triploids are sterile, we embarked on a detailed analysis of the C. cordifolia genome to elucidate its origin and structure.
METHODS: Mitotic and meiotic chromosome complement of C. cordifolia was analyzed by comparative chromosome painting using chromosome-specific BAC contigs of Arabidopsis thaliana. Resulting chromosome patterns were documented by multi

Thyroid is an endocrine gland that is responsible for producing and releasing two hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Hypothyroidism as the disorder happens when the synthesis of those hormones is impaired. It is most commonly caused by the chronic autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid, referred to as Hashimoto’s disease. In this case, apart from the pharmacological treatment, diet does matter a great deal, too. It is extremely important to provide the body with all the essential nutrients. Exclusion of products that may interfere with the uptake of iodine - the trace element

Vitamin E consists of four (α-, β-, γ-, δ-) isoforms of tocopherols (T) and tocotrienols (T3), collectively known as tocols. Current LC methods for tocols suffer from either the poor ability to resolve the β- and γ- isoforms (RPLC), or require the use of nonpolar solvents (NPLC), which complicates subsequent MS/MS detection. Moreover, we show that coupling of UV with MS leads to tocols photodegradation. To solve these problems, we developed a new RPLC-MS/MS method, allowing to resolve not only α- and δ-, but also β- and γ- tocols in hydrophobic matrices. We took advantage of an observation tha

The Cruciferae (also known as the Brassicaceae) are the family of plants that include the various familiar members of the species Brassica oleracea (e.g., broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts) as well as many other plants that are widely consumed in various parts of the world. Forage and root brassicas are widely used as winter feeds for cattle and sheep. A striking and characteristic chemical property of cruciferous plants is their high content of glucosinolates (more than 120 types), which often approaches 1% or more of their dry weight. The interest devoted to this group o

Vegetables contain iron, zinc and phosphorus as complexes with phytates limiting their availability from a vegetarian diet, meaning non-haem iron deficiency anaemia and zinc deficiency immune malfunction are a risk. Although these elements have been analysed previously in biological fluids and cereal using LC-ICP-MS, there is no method suitable for analysing iron, zinc and phosphorus simultaneously in vegetables because of their complex matrix. In this study, we analysed iron, zinc and phosphorus in cabbage, broccoli, pepper, spinach, kale and rocket after a simulated gastrointestinal digestio

Evidence indicates that cruciferous vegetables are protective against a range of cancers with glucosinolates and their breakdown products considered the biologically active constituents. To date, epidemiological studies have not investigated the intakes of these constituents due to a lack of food composition databases. The aim of the present study was to develop a database for the glucosinolate content of cruciferous vegetables that can be used to quantify dietary exposure for use in epidemiological studies of diet-disease relationships. Published food composition data sources for the glucosin

In the Alacakaya region of Turkey, serpentine soils exhibit extensive surface coverage and contain high levels of Ni, Cr, and Co, and low levels of Sr. This study investigated the phytoremediation potential of Alyssum murale to mitigate Sr in serpentine soils. Alyssum murale plants were collected along with their soil, roots, and shoots, and Sr analysis was performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The mean Sr content was 10.5 mg/kg in soil, 45.1 mg/kg in roots, and 141 mg/kg in shoots. Mean enrichment coefficients of A. murale were 5.10 for roots and 16.4 for shoots, and t

Repeated evolution of the same enzymatic activity represents a powerful model of determinism across diverse lineages, yet its underlying evolutionary trajectories remain poorly understood. Here we identified three 3-oxo-glutaric acid (OGA)-forming type III polyketide synthases (PKSs) from Brassicaceae plants through in vitro enzyme assays. Structure-function analysis combined with comparative genomics indicates a strong correlation between OGA- and triacetic acid lactone (TAL)-forming activities during the evolution of these PKSs. An evolutionary change in a key active-site residue enables a f

After the discovery of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the central nervous system by Abe and Kimura in 1996, the physiopathological role of H2S has been widely investigated in several systems such as the cardiovascular. In particular, H2S plays a pivotal role in the control of vascular tone, exhibiting mechanisms of action able to induce vasodilation: for instance, activation of potassium channels (KATP and Kv7) and inhibition of 5-phosphodiesterase (5-PDE). These findings paved the way for the research of natural and synthetic exogenous H2S-donors (i.e., molecules able to release H2S) in order to h

The aim of the work was to evaluate the usefulness of the in vitro multiplication of Biscutella laevigata calamine ecotype for in situ reclamation of post-flotation wastes polluted with Pb and Cd. The experiment was conducted on three steps: (i) plant shoots' production under in vitro condition, (ii) establishment of the material in greenhouse experiment, and finally (iii) field cultivation directly on the mining-waste heap of Olkusz Ore-Bearing Region, Poland. This region is known to be one of the most chemically-degraded area in central Europe. The laboratory-set in vitro analysis enabled to

Ora-pro-nóbis (OPN) leaves are remarkably high in mucilage content. Sustainable processing methods, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), can enhance the yield and functionality of OPN mucilage (OPNM). The resulting residue (OPNR) can be utilized to support circular economy approaches. This study aimed to determine the optimal conditions for OPNM extraction and subsequently characterize OPNR. OPNM was extracted by UAE at different power levels (200, 400, 600, and 800 W) and by conventional methods (water bath extraction at 25°C and 80°C). After extraction, OPNR was separated by filtrat
