The spectrum of malignant neoplasms in Ekiti State, south-west Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Geographic pathology is an accepted basis for unravelling trends of disease patterns. Proper documentation at the initial stage assists in establishing a foundation data. The authors are not aware of a documented pattern of malignant neoplasm in Ekiti State. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to update the available literature on malignant neoplasms and compare our findings with previous work done by other investigators. METHODS: The estimates are based on a systematic retrospective survey of cancer cases identified in the Pathology Laboratories of Federal Medical Centre, Ido-Ek

Anal Phyllodes Tumor in a Man: An Exceptionally Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Phyllodes tumors are fibroepithelial neoplasms most commonly found in the breast, and their occurrence in the anogenital region-especially in male patients-is exceedingly rare. We describe a man who presented with a localized mass in the anal region. The lesion was excised, and gross examination revealed the characteristic leaf-like clefts typical of phyllodes tumors. Histopathological analysis demonstrated a biphasic morphology, composed of epithelial and stromal components. Immunohistochemical staining showed positivity for estrogen receptor, GATA3, and mammaglobin in the epithelial componen

Paratesticular metastasis from primary midgut neuroendocrine tumor: A rare initial presentation.

Neuroendocrine tumors are malignant neoplasms arising from neuroendocrine cells. These are increasingly recognized with rising incidence and encompass a diverse range of phenotypes. The large majority of these originate in the gastrointestinal tract however primary neuroendocrine tumors have also been reported to arise in a variety of organs such as lung, breast, prostate, and skin. Primary malignant paratesticular masses are often sarcomatous in origin and metastatic spread to the paratesticular region or scrotum is exceedingly rare. We report a fascinating case of a 56-year-old male who had

Synchronous high-grade bladder carcinoma associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: A rare entity in Indian literature.

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) is one of the common lymphoproliferative disorders with an increased risk of developing subsequent neoplasms of epithelial and mesenchymal origin. The decreased immunity and B-cell dysfunction in CLL probably accounts for this emergence of secondary malignancy. Breast, brain, skin and prostate tumors have been reported as usual coincident malignancies of CLL, while in occasional cases CLL may occur with malignancies of other solid organs, such as skin, lung, heart, and prostate. Synchronous CLL with urothelial carcinoma (UC)

Cancer mortality in Switzerland, 1990-1994.

Data and statistics are presented on cancer death certification in Switzerland in 1990-1994, updating previous publications covering the period 1951-1989. Data for 1990-1994, grouped into 30 categories, are presented in 10 tables as 5-years age- and sex-specific absolute and percentage frequencies of deaths, and average annual crude, age-specific and age-standardized rates, at all ages and truncated for the 35-64 years age group. Male-to-female ratios of mortality rates, and ranks of the ten most frequent cancer sites have also been tabulated, and all-ages and truncated age-standardized rates

Geographical variation of cancer mortality in Italy.

The distribution of death certification rates from various cancers or groups of cancers in broad Italian geographical areas (north/centre/south) was analysed. In both sexes, total cancer mortality was considerably elevated in the north of the country compared to southern regions (around 70% for males and 30% for females in the truncated 35-64 rate), and generally intermediate in central areas. Northern mortality rates were higher for respiratory cancers and other tobacco related neoplasms (excluding bladder), with a north/south ratio ranging from 1.5 for lung and most respiratory sites to abou

An introduction to male breast cancer for urologists: epidemiology, diagnosis, principles of treatment, and special situations.

Breast cancer (BC) is mainly considered a disease in women, but male BC (MaBC) accounts for approximately 1.0% of BC diagnoses and 0.5% of malignant neoplasms in the western population. The stigmatization of MaBC, the fact that men are less likely to undergo regular health screenings, and the limited knowledge of health professionals about MaBC contribute to men being diagnosed at more advanced stages. The aim of this article is to increase the visibility of MaBC among urologists, who have more contact with male patients. This review highlights key points about the disease, the risk factors as

Cancer mortality in relatives of women with breast cancer: the OPCS Study. Office of Population Censuses and Surveys.

Mortality from cancer and other causes in male and female first-degree relatives of women with breast cancer diagnosed before age 60 has been examined in a large population-based cohort study, providing estimates of familial risks free from ascertainment or recall bias. Relatives of 3,295 patients with breast cancer diagnosed in the UK between 1954 and 1981 were identified through a register of households established in 1939. The 11,678 first-degree relatives thus identified were followed up through national records until the end of 1992. Over this period 5,421 deaths (including 1,527 cancer d

Endocrinology of gynaecomastia.

Gynaecomastia is the most common disorder of the male breast. It can occur at any age, and for this reason laboratory investigations may be requested by clinicians from many specialties. Gynaecomastia may occur transiently in neonates. It may also occur transiently during puberty, when it is common and generally benign. It must, however, be regarded as unusual in prepubertal children and all young and middle-aged men. Although iatrogenic and benign gynaecomastia are common in the elderly, further investigations may still be justified since breast cancer or other neoplasm must be ruled out. Bio

BRCA2 genemutation, c.2808_2811delACAA (p.Ala938Profs), in malebreastcancer - clinicopathologicalanalysisbased on a case report.

Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease that occurs in ~0.2% of all neoplasms among men. The risk of developing MBC is higher in men with a BRCA2 genetic mutation (7%). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between c.2808_2811del ACAA (p.Ala938Profs) BRCA2 mutation in MBC and clinicopathological factors. A 75-year-old patient was admitted to the Genetic Outpatient Clinic with a diagnosis of right breast cancer and with a family history of cancer (two daughters who were diagnosed with breast cancer at ages 46 and 38 years). Postoperative histopathological examination revealed

A challenging diagnosis of mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) on fine needle aspiration cytology and cell block: A cytopathologist's perspective.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) is a recently described salivary gland carcinoma that resembles the secretory carcinoma of the breast and is characterised by t(12;15) (q13;q25) translocation, which results in an ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion product. On cytomorphology, it is characterised by papillary fragments, clusters, and singly dispersed tumour cells. These tumour cells are large and have abundant vacuolated cytoplasm. Acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland is the most common differential diagnosis of MASC. Other differentials include mucoepidermoid carcinoma, salivary duct carc

Pericardial fluid cytology: an analysis of 128 specimens over a 6-year period.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial fluid (PF) accumulates through various mechanisms and cytology is part of the workup to determine the specific etiology, primarily to rule in or rule out malignancy. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the current study is the largest systematic evaluation of PF cytology performed to date. METHODS: PF specimens collected over 6 years were retrieved. Clinical history, laboratory, cytologic, and pericardial biopsy results were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 128 PF specimens were obtained from 113 patients (56 males and 57 females), representing 4.5% of all fluids. Of

Age-specific incidence of neoplasms in untreated NZR/Gd rats: an inbred strain with cardiovascular tumours and liver glycogen storage disease.

NZR/Gd is a new inbred strain of albino rats subject to epithelial mesotheliomas of the heart and also to hepatic glycogen storage disease. The age-specific incidences of neoplasms in 650 untreated NZR rats are tabulated by sex and histopathologic type. In males the most common neoplasms were artio-caval mesotheliomas (12 per cent.) and lung adenomas (10 per cent.), while in females most were pituitary adenomas (23 per cent.), lung adenomas (10 per cent.) or tumours of breast (7 per cent.), heart (4 per cent.) or liver or uterine cervix (3 per cent.). Uncommon tumours (less than 2 per cent.) w

Angiomyxoma of the Breast: A Clinicopathologic Analysis of 40 Cases.

Superficial angiomyxoma is an uncommon benign mesenchymal neoplasm that usually arises in dermis/subcutis of the extremities or trunk. Some tumors are associated with Carney complex. When arising in breast, these tumors are not well-recognized, mainly due to a lack of uniform nomenclature in the literature. This study therefore aims to improve recognition of angiomyxomas of the breast region. Forty cases were identified: demographics, presence of Carney complex, imaging and histologic features, PRKAR1A expression, and outcomes were evaluated. There were 22 female and 18 male patients (median a

Cutaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma: defining epidemiology, outcomes, and optimal therapy for a rare neoplasm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Apocrine adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm. There is a paucity of data on demographics and survival with no clear consensus on management of at risk lymph nodes, therefore, we analyzed a large cohort of patients identified via a national tumor registry. METHODS: Patients ages 17-91 from 1973 to 2006 were identified in the SEER registry and excluded breast and non-cutaneous neoplasms. Data analyzed included basic demographics, survival, surgical therapy, and stage. RESULTS: A total of 186 patients with apocrine adenocarcinoma were identified. The median age was 67 y

[Pituitary metastases: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge].

INTRODUCTION: Sellar metastases (SM) are rare manifestations of malignancy. Breast and lung cancer are the most common primary tumors. Most cases are diagnosed in patients with advanced malignant disease; however, symptoms of pituitary involvement can precede the diagnosis of the primary tumor. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of symptoms at presentation, hormonal, radiological and histological findings, management, and outcome of patients with SM from 2009 to 2020. RESULTS: Eighteen patients'cases were included, 11 with histological confirmation. Median (m) age was 53 years (range 35-75), 53

Birth cohort, time, and age effects in Italian cancer mortality.

Italian death certification data from 1955 to 1979 for total cancer mortality and 30 cancer sites in the population aged 25 to 74, were analyzed using a log-linear Poisson model to isolate the effects of birth cohort, calendar period of death, and age. The most frequent cohort pattern was characterized by increases up to the generations born between 1920 and 1930, followed by stabilization or a slight decrease. This pattern was evident for total cancer mortality in men, and for several common sites, including larynx, lung, esophagus, bladder, female breast, and ovary. Only four sites (pancreas

Is Low FMR1 CGG Repeat Length in Males Correlated with Family History of BRCA-Associated Cancers? An Exploratory Analysis of Medical Records.

The FMR1 gene has been studied extensively with regard to expansions and premutations, but much less research has focused on potential effects of low CGG repeat length. Previous studies have demonstrated that BRCA1/2 positive women are more likely to have an FMR1 genotype with one low CGG allele, and that women with both FMR1 alleles in the low CGG repeat range are more likely to have had breast cancer compared to women with normal numbers of CGG repeats. However, there has been no research as to whether low CGG repeat length impacts cancer risks in men. Therefore, this study aimed to examine
