Breast self-examination among college women: predictors for cancer control.

Monthly breast self-examination (BSE) to aid in the early diagnosis of breast cancer is advocated for all adult women, but regular and competent practice is unusual. Our purpose was to explore the associations between young women's reported cancer history, BSE training, demographic variables (predictors), self-reported frequency of BSE, BSE skill level, breast lump detection ability, confidence, and anxiety (outcome variables). A general health history questionnaire was administered to 73 female university students, faculty, and staff. BSE skill and detection ability were measured by observati

Preliminary results of the Nottingham breast self-examination education programme.

Between June 1979 and December 1984, 49,573 women (study population) between the ages of 45 and 64 years and living in one health district were invited to attend breast self-examination sessions as part of the DHSS 'UK Trial of Early Detection of Breast Cancer'. Of the women invited 50.2 per cent attended for education. A total of 319 breast cancers were diagnosed in the study population during this period. The tumour characteristics, patient prognostic groups and survival have been compared with a control population consisting of the 319 consecutive breast cancers diagnosed immediately before

[Prevention, females and physicians: the example of self-examination of the breast].

A population survey devoted to the self examination of breast (SEB) in the Canton Vaud provided some insights regarding the attitude of women toward prevention and medicine. Unpublished data related to this survey are presented, regarding the embarassment experienced by the patients, the attitude toward prevention and SEB. The specific role of SEB is commented as a tool for secondary prevention and as an autonomous attitude of the patient. A comparison is done with the prevention of the cancer of testis and the peculiar place of the female body in medicine is emphasized. The conclusion stresse

Breast self-examinations: who does them and why.

In a population of 158 women with a breast concern, two-thirds examined their own breasts. Most examiners (80%) practiced breast self-examination at least once a month, and over 60% had been regular examiners for more than 2 years. No significant difference in frequency of breast self-examination was found between women who had been examiners for longer and shorter time periods. Examiners had two main reasons for beginning and continuing breast self-examination: (1) an awareness that it is desirable to detect breast cancer early and (2) an awareness that they themselves could get breast cancer

Nurses self-performing and teaching others breast self-examination: implications for advanced practice nurses.

Although there is evidence to suggest that breast self-examination (BSE) aids in the early detection of breast cancer, the underuse of this prevention behavior continues to exist. The purpose of this study was to explore the personal behaviors and professional practices of nurses in the use of BSE and to discuss implications for the advanced practice nurse (APN). The sample (N = 300) consisted of nurses and student nurses. While almost all nurses had performed BSE at least once, fewer than half did this monthly. The majority believed it was the nurse's role to teach BSE, but almost three fourt

Who volunteers for a breast self-examination program? Evaluating the bases for self-selection.

Interest in a free breast self-examination (BSE) teaching program offered to a patient population (n = 1590) was assessed, and a follow-up survey of refusers undertaken to determine difference between participants and refusers. Fifty-one percent of the known, eligible women patients expressed interest in the program and 24% ultimately had the teaching. Participants differed from refusers most notably in terms of less previous experience with BSE, more family history of cancer, a longer relationship with their physicians, and different health beliefs. They state more confidence in the effective

Breast self-examination practice and its impact on breast cancer diagnosis in Alexandria, Egypt.

This study estimated the frequency of breast-self examination practice and its possible relation to the stage of the disease at diagnosis and patient-related delay in diagnosis among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Breast self-examination was practiced in 10.4% of cases. It was performed by patients from higher socioeconomic levels and those with a positive family history of breast cancer or benign breast mass. There was significant association between failure to practise breast self-examination and diagnostic delay. We emphasize the need for breast self-examination awareness campaigns

Knowledge and practice of breast self-examination among breast cancer patients in Damascus, Syria.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) represents an important cause of cancer death, its incidence rate has been rising gradually in the Arab world, and in Syria, BC is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death; its prognosis gets better as we detect it early in its first stages. So, it is very important to implement one or more early detection methods such as Breast Self-Examination (BSE), Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), and mammography. BSE represents an effective method to find out changes in breast structure when they happen. This study investigates the knowledge of BSE and

Breast Cancer Knowledge and Practice of Breast Self-Examination among Female University Students, Gaza.

Breast cancer is the highest public detected cancer among female population in the majority of countries worldwide. Breast self-examination (BSE) is a useful screening tool to empower women and raise awareness about their breast tissues and help detect any breast abnormalities when they occur. This study aimed to assess the level of female university students' knowledge and practice of BSE. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge about breast cancer and related items, and an observation checklist was used to test practicing BSE using a breast simulator. Breast self-examination proficiency and training effects: women at increased risk of breast cancer.

While breast self-examination (BSE) frequency has received extensive research attention, proficiency has been less frequently addressed. Moreover, BSE proficiency among women at increased risk has not been adequately examined. Assessment of BSE proficiency is critical in determining the value of BSE with mammography and clinical breast examination in the early detection of breast cancer. BSE proficiency was assessed in 101 first-degree relatives of breast cancer patients. Participants were stratified by BSE frequency and randomized to one of two training techniques (MammaCare or concentric cir

[Effectiveness, accuracy, and acceptability of breast self-examination as a breast cancer screening method].

(Breast self-examination) BSE was reviewed in terms of effectiveness, accuracy, and acceptability. Evidence on the effectiveness of BSE is inconsistent. Some researches show the effect of BSE for early detection and better prognosis of breast cancer, but others do not. Sensitivity and specificity of BSE has not been determined yet, but they are assumed to be lower than those of the clinical examination and mammography. Education of BSE for women consistently attained an improvement in frequency and skill of BSE practice. BSE may be a useful method for detecting breast cancer at the interval of

Breast cancer mortality in relation to self-reported use of breast self-examination. A cohort study of 450,000 women.

The benefits of breast self-examination (BSE) for reducing mortality from breast cancer are uncertain. We conducted an analysis of the relationship between self-reported practicing of BSE and mortality from breast cancer over 13 years in a cohort of over 548,000 women. The report of practicing BSE was unrelated to breast cancer mortality. There was a small beneficial effect in those women who were the thinnest, but this effect was small and not statistically significant. BSE was otherwise equally ineffective in subgroups defined by obesity level and family history of breast cancer. We conclude

Anxiety and adherence to breast self-examination in women with a family history of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has indicated low rates of adherence to monthly breast self-examination (BSE) in women with a family history of breast cancer, and anxiety has been identified as a major factor that may interfere with regular self-examination. However, the direction of the relationship between anxiety and BSE frequency remains unclear, with some studies indicating that high anxiety promotes adherence and others indicating that it leads to avoidance. The aim of the present study was to clarify the relationship between anxiety and adherence to breast self-examination by comparing the

Can Breast Self-examination and Clinical Breast Examination Along With Increasing Breast Awareness Facilitate Earlier Detection of Breast Cancer in Populations With Advanced Stages at Diagnosis?

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide. Early detection is central to improving disease outcomes. Three main screening methods - mammography, breast self-examination (BSE), and clinical breast examination (CBE) - have been developed and tested in Western nations. There is ongoing debate regarding the efficacy of BSE and CBE in terms of mortality reduction, and a number of international organizations no longer recommend them as screening methods. In technically less developed countries, however, where women are usually diagnosed with breast cancer at advanced stag

Breast self-examination: attitudes and practices among young women in Europe.

Breast self examination (BSE) is recommended for the early detection of breast cancer in the European Code against Cancer. Evidence from North America suggests that there is reasonable public awareness of its importance, but compliance with regular BSE is reported by only a minority of young women. Attitudes to and practice of BSE has rarely been studied outside North America. In the present study, attitudes to BSE were evaluated by questionnaire in a sample of 16,486 students aged 17-30 from 20 European countries. Frequency of BSE practice was reported by the 9,181 women in the sample. Inform

A community-wide program in breast self-examination training and maintenance.

This study reports on the effects of innovative community-wide breast self-examination education approaches in increasing breast self-examination frequency and quality, and ability to detect breast lumps during a 1-year training program and a second-year maintenance program. Four Vermont communities were randomly assigned to receive breast self-examination training plus maintenance, training alone, control (with full measurement), and low-measurement control. Random digit dialing telephone surveys were conducted at baseline and at 1- and 2-year follow-up with a panel of 637 women representing
