Post COVID REspiratory mechanisms and the efficacy of a breathing exercise intervention for DYsregulated breathing (Remedy): A feasibility RCT study.

BackgroundDysregulated breathing is a major cause of persisting breathlessness for many people following acute COVID-19 illness. There is little evidence to support the use of breathing interventions within this population.MethodsA feasibility study was conducted to investigate the potential role of supervised, remote online yogic breathing as an intervention, compared to usual care. The intervention was a six-week group programme, in which they were encouraged to attend bi-weekly. Primary outcomes of attendance, completion and acceptability were recorded and a survey following the interventio

The Human Breath Volatilome Responds to Exercise and Recovery: An Untargeted Profiling Study.

Exercise induces metabolic and physiological changes across multiple organs. These changes have been studied via several human biofluids, including urine and blood; however, they remain mainly underexplored in exhaled breath. In this exploratory pilot study, we performed untargeted profiling of breath volatile compounds (VCs) to investigate how exercise and recovery influence breath chemical composition. Breath samples were collected from 71 university athletes from three sporting disciplines. Across 143 breath samples, a total of 1,204 unique breath VCs were detected. There were distinct vola

Perception of exercise-induced dyspnea after experimentally induced breathing discomfort.

The perception of dyspnea is influenced by both physiological and psychological factors. We sought to determine whether exertional dyspnea perception could be experimentally manipulated through prior exposure to heightened dyspnea while exercising. We hypothesized that dyspnea perception during exercise would be lower following an induced dyspnea task (IDT). Sixteen healthy participants (eight females, eight males) completed two days of exercise testing. Day 1 involved an incremental cycle exercise test starting at 40 W for females and 60 W for males, increasing by 20 W each minute until volit

Modulation of Pain Sensitivity by a Hyperventilatory Breathing Exercise and Cold Exposure Training.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that healthy individuals who follow a training program comprised hyperventilatory breathing exercises and cold exposure can voluntarily activate their sympathetic nervous system and attenuate their systemic inflammatory response during experimental endotoxemia (intravenous administration of bacterial endotoxin). Furthermore, trained participants reported less endotoxemia-induced flu-like symptoms. However, it remained to be determined whether the effects on symptoms are due to the mitigated inflammatory response or involve direct analgesic effects of (elements of

A Disorder of Qi: Breathing Exercise as a Cure for Neurasthenia in Japan, 1900-1945.

Neurasthenia became a common disease and caused widespread concern in Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, whereas only a couple of decades earlier the term "nerve" had been unfamiliar, if not unknown, to many Japanese. By exploring the theories and practices of breathing exercise-one of the most popular treatments for neurasthenia at the time-this paper attempts to understand how people who practiced breathing exercises for their nervous ills perceived, conceived, and accordingly cared for their nerves. It argues that they understood "nerve" based on their existing conceptions of qi Ne

The importance of nose-breathing for the systolic blood pressure rise during exercise.

The effect of nose breathing on the systolic blood pressure was examined in ten healthy men. Nose breathing was increased above normal by exercise and tested by maximum bicycle ergometry. When the anterior part of the nose was dilated with Nozovent the nasal airflow increased by on average 29%. In this condition, all ten men could cycle at maximum load without mouth breathing and there was a significantly lower increase (13 mmHg) in the systolic blood pressure than when the nasal dilator was not used. The reason for this lower blood pressure increase is unknown. The hypothesis is put forward,

Sulfur dioxide-induced bronchoconstriction in freely breathing, exercising, asthmatic subjects.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether 0.50 ppm sulfur dioxide (SO2) in filtered air causes bronchoconstriction in freely breathing asthmatic subjects exercising at a moderately heavy work rate. Ten volunteers who had mild asthma breathed air containing no SO2 or containing 0.50 ppm SO2 In an exposure chamber as they exercised for 5 min on a cycle ergometer at a work rate of 750 kilopond meters/min (about 125 watts). We determined their specific airway resistance by body plethysmography before and after exercise. Specific airway resistance increased by 13.55 +/- 9.18 cm H2O X s (me
