Protective effect of drugs on bronchoconstriction induced by sulphur dioxide.

The response to inhaled sulphur dioxide in eight normal, seven atopic, and 22 asthmatic subjects was studied by measuring thoracic gas volume and airway resistance in a whole-body plethysmograph. The fall in specific airway conductance in relation to the concentration of sulphur dioxide inhaled (0-20 ppm) was determined in all three groups. The specific airway conductance fell significantly in the atopic and asthmatic subjects but not in the normal group. In a double-blind study prior inhalation of disodium cromoglycate caused a significant reduction in the response to sulphur dioxide inhalati

Resolution of bronchoconstriction with positive airway pressure after intravenous adenosine.

Adenosine is an endogenous nucleoside that plays a major role in the pathophysiology of airway diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also an effective drug at terminating supraventricular tachycardia and used for pharmacological stress testing with a relatively safe side effect profile. There is a contraindication for the use of adenosine in patients with asthma and a caution to use in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We present a case of a 63-year old female patient who was treated with adenosine and subsequently went into respiratory di

Can Pediatricians Assess Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction From Post-exercise Videos?

Objective: Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is a highly prevalent morbidity of childhood asthma and defined by a transient narrowing of the airways during or after physical exercise. An exercise challenge test (ECT) is the reference standard for the diagnosis of EIB. Video evaluation of EIB symptoms could be a practical alternative for the assessment of EIB. We studied the ability of pediatricians to assess EIB from post-exercise videos. Methods: A clinical assessment was performed in 20 asthmatic children (mean age 11.6 years) and EIB was measured with a standardized ECT performed i

Severe bronchoconstriction due to sarcoid-like reaction to lung cancer.

Chest radiography in a 59-year-old woman with recurrent pneumonia showed infiltrates in her left upper lung field. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy and chest computed tomography revealed severe constriction in the upper bronchus and a nodule in the left upper lobe. After lobectomy, adenocarcinoma was confirmed, with multiple non-caseating granulomas in the lung parenchyma and lymph nodes. Bronchial constriction was thought to be due to a sarcoid-like reaction secondary to lung cancer, leading to granuloma formation.

Prevalence rate of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in Annaba (Algeria) schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: We studied the prevalence rate of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in Annaba schoolchildren. No previous assessment of this syndrome had ever been done in Algeria. METHODS: EIB was evaluated using the 6 min free running test (6MFRT) on 286 children, 87.4% of whom were 10-12 years old. They performed the test in the morning, during the autumn-winter season. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured before, and then 5 and 10 min after the 6MFRT, a 15% or more decrease in post-exercise PEFR being defined as significant. RESULTS: EIB was much more frequent in asthmatic

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and exercise-induced respiratory symptoms in nurses.

In order to assess prevalence and characteristics of exercise-induced respiratory symptoms (EIRSs) and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in health care workers, we performed a cross-sectional study including 48 female nurses from primary care settings and an equal number of female office workers studied as a control group. The evaluation of examined groups included completion of a questionnaire, skin prick tests to common inhalant allergens, spirometry, and exercise and histamine challenge. We found a similar prevalence of EIRSs and EIB in both groups. EIB was closely related to asthm

Dynamic hyperinflation during bronchoconstriction in asthma: implications for symptom perception.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between respiratory symptom intensity and quality and dynamic lung hyperinflation (DH) during induced bronchoconstriction in asthma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Subjects with asthma (n = 116) underwent baseline spirometry and lung volume measurement followed by high-dose methacholine challenge testing (MCT) [maximum decrease in FEV(1) of 50% from baseline]. Dyspnea intensity (Borg scale) was measured after each dose of methacholine. Qualitative descriptors of breathlessness and functional residual capacity (FRC) were measured at

Luteolin alleviates bronchoconstriction and airway hyperreactivity in ovalbumin sensitized mice.

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and the current focus in managing asthma is the control of inflammation. In this study, we attempted to investigate the anti-asthmatic potential of a plant derived natural compound, luteolin. MATERIAL: We used a murine model of airway hyperreactivity, which mimicked some of the characteristic features of asthma. Male BALB/c mice (8-9 weeks) were used for this study. TREATMENT: Mice (n = 6) were sensitized by intraperitoneal (i. p.) injection of 10 mg of ovalbumin (OVA) on days 0, 7 and 14 followed by aerosol inhalation (5

Provocation by eucapnic voluntary hyperpnoea to identify exercise induced bronchoconstriction.

The International Olympic Committee Medical Commission (IOC-MC) requires notification for use of a beta(2) agonist at the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. This notification will be required seven days before the event and must be accompanied by objective evidence that justifies the need to use one. The IOC-MC has expressed the viewpoint that, at present, eucapnic voluntary hyperpnoea (EVH) is the optimal laboratory challenge to confirm that an athlete has exercise induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). The EVH test recommended was specifically designed to identify EIB. EVH has been performe

Expiratory glottic widening in asthmatic subjects during exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

Glottic caliber is modulated in a way that optimizes the airway resistance and the work of breathing. The midexpiratory glottic narrowing that normally occurs during tidal breathing is enhanced during histamine- or methacholine-induced airway narrowing. Exercise is associated with increased ventilatory demand and midexpiratory glottic widening in healthy subjects. However, the relative contribution of glottic aperture to airflow limitation during exercise-induced asthma is unknown. Consequently, we used the acoustic reflection technique to test whether a decrease in midexpiratory glottic size

Bronchoconstriction in asthmatics exposed to sulfur dioxide during repeated exercise.

Young male volunteers with mild asthma and hypersensitivity to methacholine were exposed for 75 min with natural breathing to 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 ppm SO2. Each exposure included three 10-min periods of moderate treadmill exercise (minute ventilation 21 l . m-2 . min-1, O2 consumption 25 ml . kg-1, and heart rate 120/min). Specific airway resistance (sRaw) was not significantly increased after exercise in 0.25 ppm SO2, relative to the control exposure (clean air). In 0.5 and 1.0 ppm SO2, sRaw was increased twofold and threefold above preexposure levels, respectively, corresponding to increa

Sulfur dioxide-induced bronchoconstriction in freely breathing, exercising, asthmatic subjects.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether 0.50 ppm sulfur dioxide (SO2) in filtered air causes bronchoconstriction in freely breathing asthmatic subjects exercising at a moderately heavy work rate. Ten volunteers who had mild asthma breathed air containing no SO2 or containing 0.50 ppm SO2 In an exposure chamber as they exercised for 5 min on a cycle ergometer at a work rate of 750 kilopond meters/min (about 125 watts). We determined their specific airway resistance by body plethysmography before and after exercise. Specific airway resistance increased by 13.55 +/- 9.18 cm H2O X s (me

Dose-dependent inhibition of cold air-induced bronchoconstriction by atropine.

We undertook a study to demonstrate whether inhalation of atropine could inhibit cold air-induced bronchoconstriction in a dose-dependent fashion. In seven subjects with asthma we assessed the effects of placebo and of various doses of inhaled atropine (0.13-2.08 mg) on a base-line specific airway resistance (sRaw) and on the increase in sRaw produced by 5 min of voluntary eucapnic hyperventilation with subfreezing air at -17 degrees C. We also assessed the effect of the lowest doses of atropine on the increase in sRaw produced by five breaths of 1.0% metacholine. Atropine in doses of 0.13 or

Inspiratory Profiles Through Easyhaler Dry Powder Inhaler During Acute Bronchoconstriction.

Background: Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are passive devices, which rely on a patient's inspiratory effort for drug dispersion and delivery. The aim of this study was to assess how acute bronchoconstriction affects the ability to use Easyhaler DPI in adults. Methods: This study was conducted as part of a parallel-group clinical trial assessing use of Salbutamol Easyhaler, Budesonide-formoterol Easyhaler and salbutamol pMDI with spacer during a methacholine challenge (MC) test. The inhalations through both Easyhaler variants, the inhaler for the single active substance product (EH-mono) and the i

Bronchoconstriction damages airway epithelia by crowding-induced excess cell extrusion.

Asthma is deemed an inflammatory disease, yet the defining diagnostic feature is mechanical bronchoconstriction. We previously discovered a conserved process called cell extrusion that drives homeostatic epithelial cell death when cells become too crowded. In this work, we show that the pathological crowding of a bronchoconstrictive attack causes so much epithelial cell extrusion that it damages the airways, resulting in inflammation and mucus secretion in both mice and humans. Although relaxing the airways with the rescue treatment albuterol did not affect these responses, inhibiting live cel

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in adolescent recreational athletes: Potential screening strategies.

BACKGROUND: Intense physical exercise in athletes increases the risk to develop exercise-induced bronchocontriction (EIB). We aimed to study EIB prevalence and explore methods for effective EIB screening. METHODS: Three hundred twenty-seven adolescent athletes (12-18 years) performing at least 12 h of sports a week were included. The evaluation consisted of spirometry, eucapnic voluntary hyperpnoea test (EVH) to evaluate for EIB, FeNO, skin prick testing, blood sampling (serum markers of epithelial damage and mast cell activation), and questionnaires (AQUA©, ACT, ACQ, and exposure and symptom

Bronchodilator response following methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction predicts acute asthma exacerbations.

Methacholine bronchial provocation test provides the concentration of methacholine causing a 20% decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) from baseline (PC20). The dose-response slope (DRS), and other continuous indices of responsiveness (CIR; the percentage decline from the post-diluent baseline FEV1 after the last dose of methacholine), and per cent recovery index (PRI; the percentage increase from the maximally reduced FEV1 after bronchodilator inhalation) are alternative measures. The clinical relevance of these indices in predicting acute asthma exacerbations has not been fully

Evaluation of different anti-asthmatic drugs on cooling-induced bronchoconstriction.

BACKGROUND: Inhalation of cold air is a well-recognized cause of bronchoconstriction in asthmatics. Sudden changes in weather temperature outdoors and indoors due to the extensive use of air conditioning in Kuwait is an important existing problem. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the most effective anti-asthmatic drugs for preventing or reversing cooling-induced contraction (CIC). METHODS: We recorded isometric tension from tracheal strips, and bronchiolar rings were prepared from male Merino sheep in organ baths during stepwise cooling. CIC was tested before and after addi
