Fatal bronchopneumonia in a Metastrongylus elongatus and Porcine circovirus type 2 co-infected pig.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infection is distributed worldwide and PCV2-associated disease (PCVAD) is considered among the most economically relevant ones to the global swine industry. PCV2 is known to play a causal role in the porcine respiratory disease complex, usually in close association with a large plethora of other biologic agents. We describe herein a case of fatal parasitic bronchopneumonia by Metastrongylus elongatus in a PCV2-infected pig. Metastrongylosis may still represent a major concern for outdoor herds. Our recent experience suggests that a concurrent PCVAD condition ma

Explainable machine learning for the early differentiation of pediatric bronchopneumonia using routine laboratory parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Early differentiation of pediatric acute respiratory infections in outpatient and emergency settings is often hindered by nonspecific clinical signs, leading to unnecessary empirical antibiotic use and avoidable radiation exposure. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and internally evaluate an early triage model to distinguish pediatric bronchopneumonia (BP) from uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection using routine, cost-effective laboratory parameters analyzed with machine-learning algorithms. METHODS: This retrospective study consecutively enrolled 532 pediatric patie

Infantile Monosialoganglioside2 (GM2) Gangliosidosis With Concurrent Bronchopneumonia: An Extraordinary Case of Tay-Sachs Disease.

Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) is a rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the deficiency of the enzyme hexosaminidase-A (Hex A), which results in the accumulation of monosialoganglioside2 (GM2) ganglioside within nerve cells, predominantly affecting individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. We report a remarkable case of a three-year-old South Asian male with infantile GM2 gangliosidosis, compounded by bronchopneumonia, a rarely documented complication in Tay-Sachs patients. The patient presented with recurrent seizures, fever, cough, and developmental delay. Confirmation of the diag

C-reactive protein in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as a potential biomarker of bacterial bronchopneumonia in dogs.

Diagnosis of canine bacterial bronchopneumonia (bBP) is challenging and mostly based on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cytology and bacterial culture (BC) results. However, bacterial contamination of BALF is frequent, intracellular bacteria are not always visualized on BALF cytology, and BC results may not be related to antimicrobial requirements. Based on local expression of C-reactive protein (CRP) by alveolar macrophages, we aimed to evaluate whether CRP was detectable in canine BALF, and to determine whether BALF-CRP detection could assist in differentiating bBP from non-bacterial bro

To observe the effect of acetylcysteine combined with diphylline on pulmonary function and inflammatory response in children with bronchopneumonia.

Bronchopneumonia is an extremely common respiratory disease in children, which may cause bronchiectasis, respiratory failure, and other complications. In this study, we observed the effect of acetylcysteine combined with diphylline in the treatment of bronchopneumonia. This includes the session time of the child's cough and wheezing symptoms, lung function, and the inflammatory response before and after treatment. In addition, we also counted the adverse reactions during the treatment of the children. The results of the study showed that children in the research group treated with acetylcystei

A Case of Bronchopneumonia Presenting With Persistent Hiccups Successfully Treated With Clonazepam and a Traditional Kampo Medicine.

Persistent hiccups are rare but can serve as an early symptom of underlying conditions, including pulmonary infections and cerebrovascular disorders. This case highlights hiccups as a presenting symptom of bronchopneumonia in a hemodialysis patient and explores the effective use of chlorpromazine and Hange-koboku-to (HKT) as symptomatic therapies. Given the potential association of hiccups with neurological conditions, this case underscores the need for comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. A 62-year-old man undergoing maintenance hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease presented with persiste

Emphasizing Pulmonary Function With Respiratory Therapy in an Infant With Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, Bronchopneumonia and Leptomeningitis.

A set of hereditary diseases affecting the adrenal glands, a couple of walnut-sized structures above the kidneys, is known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The adrenal glands generate essential hormones like cortisol, mineralocorticoids, and androgens. It is usually diagnosed in the early neonatal period. The documentation of this case study is aimed to provide a case of an infant with CAH associated with bronchopneumonia and leptomeningitis. Brought with complaints of poor feeding, moderate fever associated with chills, and loose stools, was an 11-months-old patient with a known diagn

Comparison of C-reactive protein concentrations in dogs with Bordetella bronchiseptica infection and aspiration bronchopneumonia.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a well-known acute-phase protein in dogs that may discriminate bacterial bronchopneumonia from other pulmonary conditions. Bronchopneumonia caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb) is common but the associated increase in CRP concentration in naturally infected dogs has not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: To compare CRP concentrations of dogs with Bb infection, with or without radiographic pulmonary lesions, to dogs with aspiration bronchopneumonia (ABP). ANIMALS: Sixteen dogs with Bb infection and 36 dogs with ABP. METHODS: Retrospective study. C-rea

Fatal fibrino-hemorrhagic bronchopneumonia associated with Morganella morganii in a bottlenose dolphin: a case report.

A 5 yr old, 184 kg, and 262 cm total length female bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus was found dead in a display after bloody discharge from the blowhole was observed 3 h prior to death. Pathological examination revealed fibrinous bronchopneumonia with prominent areas of necrosis (sequestra) and numerous Gram-negative bacilli within alveoli and in blood vessels of the lungs and liver and between muscle fibers. The cause of death was attributed to septicemia. Often, cases of fibrinous bronchopneumonia are characterized by bacteremia in the latter stages of infection, resulting in the death

Efficacy of the combination sodium ceftiofur-flumethasone in the treatment of experimental Pasteurella haemolytica bronchopneumonia in calves.

Severe acute bronchopneumonia was induced in 18 conventional Friesian-Holstein calves by inoculating them intratracheally with Pasteurella haemolytica type A1. Six of the calves received no treatment and served as controls. Six of the calves were treated with sodium ceftiofur and six were treated with sodium ceftiofur and flumethasone. The mortality rate in the group of calves treated with sodium ceftiofur and flumethasone was significantly lower and their clinical and haematological parameters returned to normal significantly faster than in the control calves and the calves treated with sodiu

Hartmannella vermiformis isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a young male patient with meningoencephalitis and bronchopneumonia.

Meningoencephalitis and bronchopneumonia were documented in a patient from Peubla, Mexico. The patient began with symptoms and signs of a common flu and 12 days after the onset of his disease he was admitted to the hospital presenting symptoms and signs of meningoencephalitis. The clinical course evolved into an endocraneal hypertension syndrome with bronchopneumonia, coma and death. Wide-spectrum antibiotics, immunosuppressive and anti-tuberculosis therapy were unsuccessfully administered. Important antecedents were degree I malnutrition and repeated contact with polluted water. Post-mortem a

Bronchogenic cyst with concurrent chronic suppurative bronchopneumonia in a 10-year-old German shepherd dog.

A 10-year-old spayed female German shepherd dog was transferred for acute respiratory distress and a bulla-like pulmonary lesion identified on referral radiographs. Computed tomography (CT) imaging identified a bronchiole from a dilated left cranial lobar bronchus terminating into a partially fluid-filled, cyst-like pulmonary lesion and surrounding multilobar pulmonary hyperattenuation. After failure of medical management, a left cranial lung lobectomy was done. Histopathology was consistent with a bronchogenic cyst and chronic, suppurative bronchopneumonia of the remaining parenchyma. Broncho

Acute bronchopneumonia with Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteremia in an immunocompromised patient with bronchiectasis: A case report and review of the literature.

Bordetella bronchiseptica rarely causes human disease, and bloodstream infection is exceptional. We describe a 69-year-old man with follicular lymphoma on lenalidomide-rituximab, complicated by hypogammaglobulinemia and bronchiectasis, who developed acute bronchopneumonia with B. bronchiseptica bacteremia. Despite pre-admission oral levofloxacin, he presented with fever and productive cough. Computed tomography of the chest revealed new ground-glass and consolidative opacities. Two aerobic blood-culture bottles yielded slender Gram-negative rods; direct matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionizat
