Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a fatal syndrome, which can be primary or triggered by a systemic disease or an infection. The commonly reported infectious causes of secondary HLH include Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), mycobacterium, and leishmaniasis among other infections. In this case report, we report a 50-year-old woman with brucellosis-related HLH after presenting with prolonged fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and cytopenia.

A 6-hour-old infant was admitted with severe respiratory distress and hepatosplenomegaly. Her mother had arthralgia for 4 weeks in the 7/8th month of pregnancy and the infant was born at 31 weeks. Brucella spp was detected in blood culture and serology in mother and infant, supporting the diagnosis of brucellosis with presumed transplacental transmission.

A case of spondylodiscitis due to Brucella with systematic manifestation of the disease, in a 56-year-old male patient who was a farmer, is reported. The diagnosis was made from serological tests, with a titer of 1/160. The blood culture was positive and the blood sedimentation rate was high. Radiological abnormalities showed spondylodiscitis at the T8/T9 level that were compatible with this disease. The patient was treated with streptomycin at 1g IM/day for 15 days, and doxycycline plus rifampicin for six weeks, with a clinical improvement in the condition. Vertebral involvement in brucellosi

Canine brucellosis is an infectious and zoonotic disease caused by Brucella canis, which has been reported worldwide, and is a major public health concern due to close contact between dogs and humans. In dogs, canine brucellosis manifests with abortion outbreaks, reproductive failure, enlargement of lymph nodes, and occasionally affects the osteoarticular system, although the occurrence of asymptomatic infections in dogs are not uncommon. In humans, the disease is associated with a febrile syndrome, commonly with non-specific symptoms including splenomegaly, fatigue, and weakness. Infection of

Brucellosis is a debilitating febrile illness caused by an intracellular Brucella. The disease is distributed in humans and animals widely, especially in developing countries. Ten species are included in the genus Brucella nowadays; four species of them are pathogenic to humans, which make brucellosis a zoonosis with more than 500,000 new cases reported annually. For human brucellosis, the most pathogenic species is B. melitensis followed by B. suis, while B. abortus is the mildest type of brucellosis. The infection mechanism of Brucella is complicated and mostly relies on its virulence factor

Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonosis affecting animal and human health. Till now, there is no effective vaccine licensed for brucellosis in humans. Although M5, H38 and 45/20 vaccines were used to prevent animal brucellosis in the early stages, the currently used animal vaccines are S19, Rev.1, S2, RB51 and SR82. However, these vaccines still have several drawbacks such as residual virulence and interfering conventional serological tests. With the development of DNA recombination technologies and the completion of the sequence of Brucella genome, much research focuses on the search for potentia

Human brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide, rarely occurs in Japan, and only a few chronic cases have been reported. We herein report the case of a 39-year-old Japanese woman with chronic human brucellosis, considered a Brucella canis infection, that persisted for 19 years. Her medical history and fever pattern suggested chronic brucellosis, and the diagnosis was made based on the results of a serum tube agglutination test (SAT). After undergoing combination therapy with streptomycin and doxycycline, she achieved symptomatic relief and showed negative SAT results. Even in non

Brucellosis is a livestock disease responsible for fetal loss due to abortions. Worldwide, this disease has profound economic and social impact by reducing the ability of livestock producers to provide an adequate supply of disease-free meat and dairy products. In addition to its presence in domesticated animals, brucellosis is harbored in a number of wildlife species creating new disease reservoirs, which adds to the difficulty of eradicating this disease. Broad and consistent use of the available vaccines would contribute in reducing the incidence of brucellosis. Unfortunately, this practice

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the current status of the disease, the mechanism of infection, and pathogenesis, its zoonotic potential, diagnostic advances, treatment regimens, and the preventive measures that can be adopted in managing human brucellosis in under-developed countries such as Nepal.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review of all the available literture through Google Scholar, PubMed, Gideon Informatics, World Health Organization and other legitimate sources. Other secondary informations were collected from the government agencies such as department of livest

Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonosis that affects the public health and economic performance of endemic as well as non-endemic countries. In developing nations, brucellosis is often a very common but neglected disease. The purpose of this review is to provide insight about brucellosis in animal populations in Egypt and help to understand the situation from 1986 to 2013. A total of 67 national and international scientific publications on serological investigations, isolation, and biotyping studies from 1986 to 2013 were reviewed to verify the current status of brucellosis in animal popul

The infectious allergy plays an important role in the pathogenesis of brucellosis. In the allergy diagnostic of toxoplasmosis the cell reactions in vivo are equally applied with the Burnet intradermal allergic test. In the present study the reaction of leukolysis was applied to detect the sensibilization of leucocytes in blood and saliva under brucellosis. The reaction is considered positive in case of occurrence of lysis of 15% and more of leucocytes after incubation with allergen. The percentage of lyzed leucocytes of blood and saliva makes 18.4 +/- 1.2 in case with brucellin, 16.8 +/- 0.75

Brucellosis has been reported mainly among pregnant women, and it may lead to spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death, or delivery of an infected neonate. Transmission through breast milk has also been described, but congenital cases are not commonly reported. We present the clinical findings, laboratory studies, treatment, and final outcome of a late prenatal transmission from a mother to her term infant of Brucella melitensis biovar 1. Because the maternal disease was undetected due to lack of clinical suspicion, diagnosis was made possible only by the results of infant blood cultures

Although almost a century has gone by since its first description in the country, Turkey has not been able to eradicate brucellosis, which remains a major public health problem. In this review, we give an overview of the epidemiological and epizootic status of brucellosis in Turkey. Although little readily accessible data concerning the epidemiology of brucellosis in Turkey are available, the limited official and published data were analyzed. Despite being endemic in Turkey, brucellosis remains under-diagnosed and under-reported. Adherence to traditional farming practices and lifestyles and th

Brucellosis is a common worldwide zoonotic disease. Cutaneous manifestations are not specific and affect 1-14% of patients with brucellosis. Here, we describe 49-year-old female with fever and a diffuse maculopapular rash due to Brucella melitensis infection. Histopathology of skin biopsy revealed leukocytoclastic vasculitis; positive blood cultures for B. melitensis established the diagnosis of brucellosis. We provide a review of the relevant literature.
