Immune response of buffaloes to vaccination with Brucella abortus strain 19.

The immune response of buffalo calves and heifers to a full or half dose of Brucella abortus strain 19 vaccine was studied. Buffalo calves developed high serum agglutination test (SAT) titres following full dose vaccination. These titres declined more rapidly in calves of six months of age than in calves of eleven to twelve months of age. Specific immunoglobulin G titres, as measured by 2-mercaptoethanol-treated serum agglutination, declined much earlier than SAT titres. Buffalo heifers vaccinated with a full or half dose developed high SAT titres. The rate of decline of SAT titres in heifers

Studies on the comprehensive control of babesiasis in cattle and buffaloes.

To obtain a highly effective method for controlling babesiosis in cattle and buffalo, an epidemiological survey was carried out at Zuiyun village in Hubai Province. On the grounds of the epidemiological data, control measures which included preventive drugs and killing the vectors were devised. After two years of control no clinical cases of bovine babesiosis were found. The average number of ticks on cattle or buffalo decreased from 9-282 to 0-11.3. Good results were obtained in another epidemic area using this control method. These results indicated that this technique of controlling babesio

Water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis): potential reservoirs of trypanosomatids in endemic areas.

Trypanosomatids are protozoan parasites that include the genera Trypanosoma and Leishmania, which infect a wide range of mammalian species, including humans and ruminants. This study aimed to assess the presence of Trypanosomatid parasites in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) using molecular techniques. Blood samples and conjunctival swabs from the right and left eyes were collected from 100 buffaloes (44 females and 56 males). PCR analysis detected Trypanosomatids in 32% (32/100) of the buffaloes: 29% (29/100) tested positive for DNA extracted from blood, and 4% (4/100) tested positive from c

Morphological and Molecular Identification of Paramphistomum epiclitum from Buffaloes in Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the genetic and morphological characters of Paramphistomum epiclitum. For the first time in Pakistan, adult flukes were morphologically characterized and the sequence variation in the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region, including the first internal transcribed spacers (ITS1) and the 5.8S gene of the Paramphistomum epiclitum were studied. METHODS: Adult amphistomes were examined by light microscopy and sequences of ITS1 and 5.88S rDNA genes were obtained. RESULTS: Twenty adult flukes were measured, 13.17 ± 1.19 mm in length and 5.28 ± 1.34 mm in width. Sev

Global serum proteomic changes in water buffaloes infected with Fasciola gigantica.

BACKGROUND: The liver fluke Fasciola gigantica modulates several signaling pathways in infected buffaloes to facilitate its survival and establishment of persistent infection. In response to the parasite invasion, buffaloes activate innate and adaptive immune responses to counter the parasite infection. To detect new proteins that might be involved in the interaction between F. gigantica and the buffaloes, and that also might serve as biomarkers for fasciolosis, we used proteomic techniques to study the serum proteome of buffaloes during F. gigantica infection. Here, we used an isobaric tags f

Mitigated clinical disease in water buffaloes experimentally infected with Babesia bovis.

Water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are raised in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and act as hosts of Babesia bovis parasites and the tick vector Rhipicephalus microplus. As no clinical cases of B. bovis-infection have been reported, we hypothesized that, unlike bovines, water buffaloes respond asymptomatically to an acute infection. To test this hypothesis, we inoculated two groups of 24-month-old Mediterranean breed water buffaloes with 108 erythrocytes infected with two Argentine B. bovis isolates: BboM2P (n = 5) or BboS2P (n = 5). These strains displayed mild (BboM2P) or high

Staphylococci in cattle and buffaloes with mastitis in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt.

The aim of this study was to provide the first detailed insight into the population structure of Staphylococcus aureus in one modern dairy farm (Gamasa) and several household cows and buffaloes in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt. Eight hundred seventy-two quarter milk samples of 218 dairy cattle and buffaloes with clinical and subclinical mastitis were investigated. Bacteria were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and staphylococci were further characterized by DNA sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and microarray analysis. Diagnostic and prognostic indicators of omasal impaction in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis).

Twelve of 46 female buffaloes with abdominal disorders were diagnosed with omasal impaction. They had been fed finely chopped machine-prepared straw. They were characterised by anorexia, an absence of defecation, abdominal distension, ruminal hypomotility or atony and a suspension of rumination. Omasal impaction was confirmed upon left flank laparorumenotomy on the basis of the size of the omasum and the consistency of its contents. After ruminal evacuation, a long flexible pipe was introduced through the reticulo-omasal orifice and the omasal contents were flushed back into the rumen with wat

Glomerulonephritis in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) naturally infected by Fasciola hepatica.

Glomerulonephritis caused by Fasciola hepatica was observed in buffaloes. Renal biopsies of 20 buffaloes, 11 with F. hepatica and 9 uninfected buffaloes (controls), were examined by light microscopy, direct and indirect immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemical analysis. The biopsies of seven (63.6%) infected buffaloes revealed membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, three biopsies (27.3%) showed mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis, and one kidney presented normal biopsy specimens. In the control group, seven buffaloes (77.8%) presented normal biopsy specimens, while two (22.2%) revea

Effect of exercise on thermal and acid-base balance in buffaloes.

Twelve male buffaloes about 3 years old each pulled a stone roller weighing 100 kg at a speed of about 3 km/h on even ground for 3 h. Skin temperature, rectal temperature, respiration rate and heart rate increased in response to exercise. Significant increases in the values of Base Excess, plasma bicarbonate, standard bicarbonate and blood pH and a reduction in carbon dioxide tension indicated that the exercised animals were suffering from both respiratory and metabolic alkalosis.

Freezability biomarkers in the epididymal spermatozoa of swamp buffalo.

As an alternative to ejaculated semen, epididymal spermatozoa (ES) can be recovered and cryopreserved for use in artificial insemination and other assisted reproductive technologies. However, variabilities in the sperm response to freeze-thaw procedures challenge its inherent value. Therefore, the present study aims to clarify the freezability phenomena in the swamp buffalo ES, where pieces of literature do not abound. Here, we isolated ES from swamp buffaloes using abattoir-derived, post-mortem caudal epididymis by slicing-flushing technique. Following cryopreservation by slow-freezing, ES sa

Buffalo Milk as a Source of Probiotic Functional Products.

In the past two decades, consumption of food has been accruing due to its health claims which include gastrointestinal health, improved immunity, and well-being. Currently, the dairy industry is the sector where probiotics are most widely used, especially in fermented milk, cheese, yoghurt, butter, and dairy beverages. Although, it is still necessary to face many challenges regarding their stability and functionality in food. Considering the increasing demand for healthy products, it is necessary to develop strategies that aim to increase the consumption of functional foods in order to meet pr

The role of MC1R gene in buffalo coat color.

Melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) plays a major role in pigmentation in many species. To investigate if the MC1R gene is associated with coat color in water buffalo, the coding region of MC1R gene of 216 buffalo samples was sequenced, which included 49 black river buffalo (Murrah and Nili-Ravi), 136 swamp buffalo (Dehong, Diandongnan, Dechang, Guizhou, and Xilin) with white and gray body, and 31 hybrid offspring of river buffalo Nili-Ravi (or Murrah) and swamp buffalo. Among the three variation sites found, SNP684 was synonymous, while SNP310 and SNP384 were nonsynonymous, leading to p.S104G and

The microanatomy of the palatine tonsils of the buffalo (Bos bubalus).

The palatine tonsils play a key role in initiating immune responses against antigens entering the body through the mouth. They are also replication sites of some pathogens. There is no data available about the structure of the palatine tonsils of the Egyptian water buffalo. Therefore, palatine tonsils of 14 clinically healthy buffalo bulls (2-3 years old) were examined macroscopically and microscopically using light, and transmission electron microscopes. The tonsils had an elongated kidney shape with a central invagination (tonsillar fossa) containing a single macroscopic opening leading to a
