Child Maltreatment and Whole-person Health: Investigation of Psychosocial Buffers Using Structural Equation Modeling.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate psychosocial factors that may modify associations between child maltreatment and whole-person health (ie, depressive symptoms, chronic health conditions, psychological well-being, and inflammation). METHODS: Data were drawn from a subsample ( N = 1255) of Midlife in the United States study, a national longitudinal study of health and well-being. Structural equation modeling was applied to test hypotheses. RESULTS: Child maltreatment was associated with more depressive symptoms (standardized β = 0.29, p < .001), more chronic health condi

Free Solution Oligonucleotide Separation by CE-MS in Acidic Buffers and Positive ESI Ionization.

This work focuses on the separation of oligonucleotides (ONs) in a free solution by capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS). Specifically, we evaluated a combination of separation in acidic background electrolytes (BGEs), nanospray ionization, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry in positive mode. A mixture of synthetic ONs, ranging in length from 15 to 78 nt, was employed as the test compounds. The key to a good separation selectivity of ONs lies in the different protonation of individual nucleobases. To this end, we assessed the acidity constant (pKa) of the nucleobases in nucleo

Self-compassion Buffers Impaired Decision-Making by Potential Problem Gamblers in a Casino Setting.

Self-compassionate individuals treat themselves kindly when undergoing stress. The present study examined self-compassion's relationship to risky decision-making on a gambling task by 240 problem and non-problem gamblers who were tested in a casino setting. Multi-level modeling analyses showed that participants expressed differential rates of learning to avoid risks on the gambling task, depending on their status as potential problem/non-problem gamblers and their level of self-compassion. Among potential problem gamblers, participants higher in self-compassion showed significant gains in perf

Gratitude, hope, mindfulness and personal-growth initiative: buffers or risk factors for problem gambling?

The majority of prevention and intervention research in problem gambling (PG) has focused on identifying negative risk factors. However, not all at-risk individuals go on to develop anticipated disorders and many thrive in spite of them. In healthcare settings, PG and other disorders are typically conceptualized from the biomedical perspective that frame disorders as something negative residing within the individual and reduction in negativity is seen as success. Indeed, this problem-focused conceptualization may be adequate in many cases as reducing PG behaviour is undoubtedly an important ou

High social support buffers the effects of 5-HTTLPR genotypes within social anxiety disorder.

An interaction between genetic aspects and environmental stressors has been suggested with regard to the etiology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, potential protective interplays which might decrease the risk of SAD have not been considered so far. Thus, we analyzed the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and differing levels of social support regarding SAD. The sample was based on participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania, Germany. We used the triallelic genotype of 5-HTTLPR and longitudinal data of social support. Final analyses were conducted in 79 individuals with SAD and 1,708 w

Pangloss revisited: a critique of the dilution effect and the biodiversity-buffers-disease paradigm.

The twin concepts of zooprophylaxis and the dilution effect originated with vector-borne diseases (malaria), were driven forward by studies on Lyme borreliosis and have now developed into the mantra "biodiversity protects against disease". The basic idea is that by diluting the assemblage of transmission-competent hosts with non-competent hosts, the probability of vectors feeding on transmission-competent hosts is reduced and so the abundance of infected vectors is lowered. The same principle has recently been applied to other infectious disease systems--tick-borne, insect-borne, indirectly tr

Influence of amine buffers on carbon tetrachloride reductive dechlorination by the iron oxide magnetite.

The influence of amine buffers on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) reductive dechlorination by the iron oxide magnetite (FeIIFeIII2O4) was examined in batch reactors. A baseline was provided by monitoring the reaction in a magnetite suspension containing NaCl as a background electrolyte at pH 8.9. The baseline reaction rate constant was measured at 7.1 x 10(-5)+/-6.3 x 10(-6) L m(-2) h(-1). Carbon monoxide (CO) was the dominant reaction product at 82% followed by chloroform (CHCl3) at 5.2%. In the presence of 0.01 M tris-(deuteroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRISd), the reaction rate constant nearly tripl

pH(i) responses to osmotic cell shrinkage in the presence of open-system buffers.

Changes in plasma volume in vivo cause rapid changes in extracellular pH by altering the plasma bicarbonate concentration at a constant Pco(2) (Garella S, Chang BS, and Kahn SI. Kidney Int 8: 279, 1975). Few studies have examined the possibility that changes in cell volume produce comparable changes in intracellular pH (pH(i)). In the present study, alveolar macrophages were exposed to hyperosmotic medium in the absence or presence of the open-system buffers CO(2)-HCO(3)(-), propionic acid-propionate, or NH(3)-NH(4)(+). In the absence of open-system buffers, exposure to twice-normal osmolarity

Perioperative administration of buffered versus non-buffered crystalloid intravenous fluid to improve outcomes following adult surgical procedures.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative fluid strategies influence clinical outcomes following major surgery. Many intravenous fluid preparations are based on simple solutions, such as normal saline, that feature an electrolyte composition that differs from that of physiological plasma. Buffered fluids have a theoretical advantage of containing a substrate that acts to maintain the body's acid-base status - typically a bicarbonate or a bicarbonate precursor such as maleate, gluconate, lactate, or acetate. Buffered fluids also provide additional electrolytes, including potassium, magnesium, and calcium, more

Metabolic buffering restricts phenotype switching in melanoma.

The impact of the metabolic microenvironment on epigenetically plastic cancer cells underpins phenotypic heterogeneity, a major cause of metastasis and therapy resistance. Nutrient limitation is a key microenvironmental stress, and can cause cells to transition from proliferative to invasive phenotypes, however, whether cancer cells have the capacity to delay phenotype switching remains unknown. Here, using melanoma as a model, we reveal that the ability to buffer glucose availability by accumulating and mobilizing glycogen can determine cancer cell phenotypic transitions. While proliferating

Validation of Marburg Virus Inactivation by AVL Buffer.

The removal of inactivated Marburg virus (MARV) material from a biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) setting is a critical first step to enable downstream analyses at lower containment levels. The following method presents a highly sensitive approach for efficacy testing of virus inactivation without the loss of a low titer virus that may otherwise be masked by cytotoxic effects of the cells. This protocol outlines the procedure used to validate the inactivation of MARV samples for viral RNA extraction in cell culture, demonstrating accurate contact time needed for exposure, minimal loss of virus titers

Evaluation of Slowfade Diamond as a buffer for STORM microscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Immunotherapy has led to a paradigm shift in reinvigorating treatment of cancer. Nevertheless, tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) experience functional polarization on account of the generation of suppressive metabolites, contributing to impaired antitumor immune responses. METHODS: Hence, metabolic reprogramming of tumor microenvironment (TME) can synergistically improve the efficacy of anti-tumor immunotherapy. Herein, we engineered an iron-based nanoplatform termed ERFe3O4 NPs. This platform features hollow Fe3O4 nanoparticles loaded with the natural product emodin, the oute

Proton buffering and metal leaching in sandy soils.

Recent developments in acidification research focused on the leaching of metals from contaminated soil. In this paper the buffering of sandy soils upon acidification is studied in relation to the release of major (Al, Ca, Mg) and trace metals (Cu, Cd, Ni, Zn) from the soil reactive surface. The buffering process and the (de)sorption of metals are described with a mechanistic multisurface model, expressing the sorption onto different soil surfaces (organic matter, clay, Fe (hydr)oxides). The pH of sandy soil samples is predicted upon proton addition in combination with the behavior of major and

Acute hypernatraemia during bicarbonate-buffered haemodialysis.

Five patients on maintenance haemodialysis were exposed to varying degrees of hypernatric dialysate, leading to acute hypernatraemia (plasma sodium concentrations 158 mmol/l to 179 mmol/l). With the exception of one patient, who developed pulmonary oedema, symptoms were minimal and in each case hypernatraemia was corrected without residual complications. The hypernatric dialysate resulted from a granular and less soluble batch of sodium bicarbonate powder. The extra effort required to dissolve the powder caused CO2 to be shaken out of solution, producing sodium carbonate and raising the pH. Mi

Potentiation of the poliocidal effectiveness of free chlorine by a buffer.

Poliovirus 1 was inactivated by free chlorine at pH 9.0 three times more rapidly in boric acid (0.05 M)-NaOH buffer than in purified (carbon-filtered, deionized) water. Thus, at a given concentration of free chlorine, it took three times longer to inactivate the same fraction of the poliovirus in purified water than in the boric acid-NaOH buffer. Conversely, in a given period of time, three times more chlorine was required to inactivate a given percentage of the virus in purified water than in the boric acid-NaOH buffer. Buffers are almost always used to control pH in disinfection studies with

Use of buffered hypochlorite solution for disinfecting fibrescopes.

The possible use of sodium hypochlorite solution buffered to pH 7.6 and containing 100 ppm available chlorine (avCl) for disinfecting fibrescopes was investigated. A flexible fibrescope experimentally contaminated with Pseudomonas putida, Mycobacterium fortuitum, or Bacillus subtilis spores was effectively disinfected within 10 m in repeatedly and without any observable adverse effect on the instrument. The corrosive nature of buffered hypochlorite was investigated by immersing various fibrescope components and metal wires in solutions of different strength for long periods and examining them
