Variation of fitness and reproductive strategy in male Bufo raddei under environmental heavy metal pollution.

Environmental pollution is known to adversely affect amphibian reproduction and survival, however, the knowledge of environmental heavy metal pollution on fitness of male amphibian is largely unknown. The present study aimed to explore the variation in fitness of male Bufo raddei, a widespread anuran in northwest China, subjected to long-term heavy metal stress in Baiyin (BY) city. BY is heavily polluted by heavy metals mainly copper, zinc, lead and cadmium; meanwhile, Liujiaxia (LJX), a relatively unpolluted area, was chosen as control. Differences in advertisement call, larynx size, breeding

Acid-base regulation and blood gases in the anuran amphibian, Bufo marinus, during environmental hypercapnia.

Specimens of Bufo marinus were exposed to aerial and aquatic hypercapnia (5% CO2) in a closed, water recirculation system to evaluate mechanisms involved in the compensation of a respiratory acidosis in these animals. Arterial PCO2 was elevated from about 9 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133.3 Pa) to 35 (1 h) and 37 mmHg (2 h), and gradually approached about 40 mmHg (24 h of hypercapnia). The typical hypercapnia-induced reduction in plasma pH from about 7.9 to below 7.4 was partially offset, at least during the first hours of hypercapnia, by a reduction in the inspired/arterial PCO2 difference, presumably bro

Berberine-induced pigment dispersion in Bufo melanostictus melanophores by stimulation of beta-2 adrenergic receptors.

Reduced production of melanin by decreased or the absence of melanocytes leads to various hypopigmentation disorders, and the development of melanogenetic agents for photoprotection and hypopigmentation disorders is one of the top priority areas of research. Hence, the present study was carried out to elucidate the ability of berberine, a principal active ingredient present in the roots of the herb Berberis vulgaris to stimulate pigment dispersion in the isolated skin melanophores of the toad Bufo melanostictus. In the present study, mean melanophore size index of the isolated skin melanophore

Acid-base-electrolyte balance responses of Bufo marinus to aminoglutethimide, corticosterone, and aldosterone during hypercapnia.

Experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that one or more interrenal steroids are active in regulatory responses to respiratory acidosis in the toad, Bufo marinus. Toads were divided into four experimental groups. The first group received sham injections. The second group received 1-3 mg of aminoglutethimide (AG) every 8 hr. AG inhibits the conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone, thus inhibiting all steroid hormone synthesis. The third group received AG + 5 micrograms of aldosterone on the same schedule. The fourth group received AG + 25 micrograms of corticosterone on the same sch

Inhibition of Metamorphosis, Thyroid Gland, and Skeletal Ossification Induced by Hexavalent Chromium in Bufo gargarizans Larvae.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr [VI]) is one of the major detrimental heavy metal pollutants. In the present study, Bufo gargarizans were exposed to 0, 52, 104, 208, and 416 μg/L Cr (VI) from Gosner stage 2 until metamorphosis; and growth, development, and histological characteristics of the thyroid gland and skeletal ossification were examined. The results demonstrated that the survival rate of larvae exposed to Cr (VI) was not different from that measured in animals from the control group. However, high levels of Cr (VI) (104, 208, and 416 μg/L) were associated with significantly delayed growth and

Effects of perchlorate and exogenous T4 exposures on development, metamorphosis and endochondral ossification in Bufo gargarizans larvae.

Several endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been proven to interfere with the physiological function of thyroid hormone (TH), which affected growth and development. However, few studies have investigated the effects of EDCs on TH axis with consequence for skeletal development in amphibians. This study thus examined the potential role of perchlorate and T4 in growth, development and endochondral ossification during metamorphosis of Bufo gargarizans. Our studies showed that NaClO₄ treatment caused weight gain and delayed the developmental stage in B. gargarizans tadpoles, while T4 decreas

Water permeability properties of the ovarian oocytes from Bufo arenarum and Xenopus laevis: a comparative study.

The water permeability properties of ovarian oocytes from Xenopus laevis and Bufo arenarum, a toad species found in the Buenos Aires region, were studied. We report that: (i) the water osmotic permeability (Pf, cm/sec x 10(-4)) was significantly higher in Bufo (6 degrees C = 12.3 +/- 2.4; 18 degrees C = 20.8 +/- 4.8) than in Xenopus oocytes (6 degrees C = 5.3 +/- 0.3; 18 degrees C = 6.2 +/- 1.6). The corresponding water diffusion permeability values (Pd, cm/sec x 10(-4)) were: Xenopus = 2.3 +/- 0.3 (6 degrees C) and 4.8 +/- 0.7 (18 degrees C); Bufo = 2.7 +/- 0.4 (6 degrees C) and 6.0 +/- 0.5 (

[The life cycle of Gorgoderina rochalimai Pereira and Cuocolo, 1940, a Digenea parasite of Bufo marinus in Guadeloupe].

The sporocysts of G. rochalimai were found in Guadeloupe, in the bivalve Mollusc Sphaeriidae Eupera viridans. The cystocercous cercariae are ingested by Odonatan larvae in which the encystement occurs. The Toad Bufo marinus is the definitive host of the parasite. The life-cycle of G. rochalimai shows close similarities with the ones already known in many other speicies of Gorgoderidae.

Effects of fluoride on the histology, lipid metabolism, and bile acid secretion in liver of Bufo gargarizans larvae.

In our study, Bufo gargarizans (B. gargarizans) larvae were exposed to control, 0.5, 5, 10 and 50 mg/L of NaF from Gs 26 to 42. At Gs 42, we evaluated the changes of liver histology and the mRNA levels of target genes in liver. In addition, we also examined the composition and content of fatty acids. Histological analysis revealed that fluoride caused liver injury, such as the increase of number of melanomacrophage centres, atrophy of nucleus, dilation of bile canaliculus, and decrease of quantity, degradation and deposition of lipid droplets. The results of RT-qPCR indicated that exposure to

Tachykinin receptors in the small intestine of the cane toad (Bufo marinus): a radioligand binding and functional study.

In this study, we have used radioligand binding and functional techniques to investigate tachykinin receptors in the small intestine of the cane toad Bufo marinus. The radioligand [125I]Bolton-Hunter [Sar9,Met(O2)11]substance P (selective at mammalian NK-1 receptors) showed no specific binding. Specific binding of [125I]Bolton-Hunter substance P ([125I]BHSP) was saturable, of high affinity (Kd 0.3 nM) and was inhibited by SP (IC50 0.64 nM) > ranakinin approximately neurokinin A (NKA) > or = SP(5-11) > or = neuropeptide gamma > or = scyliorhinin II > scyliorhinin I > or = [Sar9]-SP > or = neuro

Effect of mechanical means on the restoration of the limb regenerative ability in metamorphic stages of Bufo regularis Reuss.

Limbs of Bufo regularis REUSS metamorphic stages No. 57, 63 and 66 were transected at the thigh level. Removal of the apical skin cover on the third postoperative day, followed by traumatization after further two days in the limb stumps, was more effective in the enhancement of the regenerative ability than when each one of these procedures was performed independently. Better results were achieved in cases of the preclimactic stage (No. 57) where about 30% of the cases (Series III) developed heteromorphic limb outgrowths having more distal structures as the shank ending with or without toes.
