Architecture for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Their Therapists.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to identify an architectural design framework that can be applied to create adaptable, transformative therapy rooms that benefit children with autism and their therapists. BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that environment shapes and influences human behavior. However, there remains a lack of evidence of effective design for pediatric rehabilitation therapy rooms. This study specifically focuses on how the design of the therapy room influences the patient's level of comfort and participation as well as the therapists' quality and efficiency of t

Crystallization and initial X-ray diffraction analysis of the multi-domain Brucella blue light-activated histidine kinase LOV-HK in its illuminated state.

The pathogenic bacterium Brucella abortus codes for a multi-domain dimeric cytoplasmic histidine kinase called LOV-HK, which is a key blue light-activated virulence factor in this microorganism. The structural basis of the light activation mechanism of this protein remains unclear. In this work, full-length LOV-HK was cloned, expressed and purified. The protein was activated by light and crystallized under a controlled illumination environment. The merge of 14 individual native data sets collected on a single crystal resulted in a complete X-ray diffraction data set to a resolution of 3.70 Å w

Physiologic discrimination of stop consonants relates to phonological skills in pre-readers: a biomarker for subsequent reading ability?(†).

Reading development builds upon the accurate representation of the phonological structure of spoken language. This representation and its neural foundations have been studied extensively with respect to reading due to pervasive performance deficits on basic phonological tasks observed in children with dyslexia. The subcortical auditory system - a site of intersection for sensory and cognitive input - is exquisitely tuned to code fine timing differences between phonemes, and so likely plays a foundational role in the development of phonological processing and, eventually, reading. This temporal

Ill-defined and multiple causes on death certificates--a study of misclassification in mortality statistics.

Biases can distort, limit or inhibit the value of mortality data as an epidemiological re source. From 9500 deaths occurring in Naples (Italy during 1994, a random sample of 372 death certificates reporting ill-defined causes and multiple causes of death was extracted. The code for the underlying cause on the death certificate (assigned code) was compared with the cause reattributed with the aid of interview of the certifying physician or clinical records (modified code). The aim was to investigate the extent of misclassification of 'underlying cause' in deaths attributed to ill-defined and/or

An environmental scan of messages promoting compliance behaviour for a medical directive in COVID-19.

Compliance with COVID-19 preventive behaviours together with the urgency to contain the virus underscored the need for rapid yet effective public health massaging. While messages aimed to inform and protect the public, the evolving situation often precluded the use of theoretically-based and empirically-informed approaches. This study aimed to analyse the presence and prevalence of belief-based constructs and strategies known to foster behaviour change embedded within Australian Government communications regarding compliance with QR code check-in behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic using th

Therapist alliance-building behavior within a cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety in youth.

Explored the specific behavior of therapists contributing to a child client's perception of a therapeutic alliance with youth (n = 56) who received a manualized cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. The first 3 sessions were coded for 11 therapist behaviors hypothesized to predict ratings of alliance. Child, therapist, and observer alliance ratings were gathered after the 3rd and 7th therapy sessions. "Collaboration" positively predicted early child ratings of alliance, and "finding common ground" and "pushing the child to talk" negatively predicted early child ratings of allia

From retinotopic to ordinal coding: Dissecting the cortical stages of visual word recognition.

Fluent reading requires the brain to precisely encode the positions of letters within words, distinguishing for instance FORM and FROM across variations in size, position, and font. Early visual areas, however, are known to encode retinotopic positions, and how these representations get transformed into a position-invariant neural code remains unclear. Building upon a computational model of reading, we used 7T functional MRI and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to reveal a cortical hierarchy in which early visual areas (V1-V4) predominantly encode retinotopic information, whereas higher-level regi

Mobile app-based pain management education for ambulatory surgery patients in Denmark: A Legitimation Code Theory analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This paper analyzes the educational content of the MinSmerte (MyPain) app, designed to educate patients on postoperative pain management after ambulatory surgery. It examines the complexity of instructional videos, investigating how these relate to the legitimacy claims constructed by educators - defined as assertions about the value of the information based on its relevance, authority, alignment with community norms. Patient feedback is explored to assess their perceptions of the app's effectiveness in facilitating knowledge building. METHODS: The study involved an analysis of th

Deep-AutoMO: Deep automated multiobjective neural network for trustworthy lesion malignancy diagnosis in the early stage via digital breast tomosynthesis.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women, and early diagnosis of malignant lesions is crucial for developing treatment plans. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has emerged as a valuable tool for early breast cancer detection, as it can identify more lesions and improve the early detection rate. Deep learning has shown great potential in medical image-based cancer diagnosis, including DBT. However, deploying these models in clinical practice may be challenging due to concerns about reliability and robustness. In this study, we developed a novel deep automated multiobjective neural n

Reconsidering indoor radon monitoring strategies in Romanian medical buildings: a data-driven perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Medical buildings are complex indoor environments with heterogeneous room functions, occupancy patterns and HVAC (especially ventilation) requirements. Although radon monitoring methodologies are applied across workplaces, healthcare facilities differ from residential buildings in air exchange, operational schedules and functional zoning. This study investigated indoor radon concentration in Romanian medical buildings and assessed whether current monitoring assumptions, including residential-derived seasonal correction factors, adequately reflect observed exposure patterns. Protection against radon-222 at home and at work. A report of a task group of the International Commission on Radiological Protection.

The Commission has used an epidemiological basis for the assessment and control of radon exposure in this report. Since all the available epidemiological studies use the quantity inhaled potential alpha energy, this has been used as the primary quantity in this report. The Commission does not recommend the use of the dosimetric human respiratory model (ICRP, 1994) for the assessment and control of radon exposures. The Commission sees practical advantages in the delineation of radon-prone areas where more buildings than usual have elevated radon levels. For dwellings, it is suggested that areas

Caring for the patient, caring for the record: an ethnographic study of 'back office' work in upholding quality of care in general practice.

BACKGROUND: The quality of information recorded about patient care is considered key to improving the overall quality, safety and efficiency of patient care. Assigning codes to patients' records is an important aspect of this documentation. Current interest in large datasets in which individual patient data are collated (e.g. proposed NHS care.data project) pays little attention to the details of how 'data' get onto the record. This paper explores the work of summarising and coding records, focusing on 'back office' practices, identifying contributors and barriers to quality of care. METHODS:

Applying a mutual capacity building model to inform peer provider programs in South Africa and the United States: A combined qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Globally, there is a treatment gap for substance use treatment and harm reduction services. As peer-delivered interventions expand to address this gap in both high-income countries (HICs) and low and middle-income countries (LMICs), they provide an opportunity to examine mutual capacity building, the bidirectional exchange of ideas between distinct settings to address common challenges. METHODS: The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of patients in Cape Town and Baltimore about the acceptability and feasibility of a peer-delivered intervention using a combined quali

Democratising health and social care research through long-term public involvement and engagement: a qualitative process evaluation of the Community Research and Engagement Network (CoREN).

BACKGROUND: Interest in public involvement in UK health and social care research continues to grow, yet many initiatives are short-lived and offer public collaborators little meaningful influence. Established in 2019 within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North West Coast (ARC NWC), the Community Research and Engagement Network (CoREN) was created to provide a sustained platform for co-production of health and social care research. This article reports a theory-informed qualitative process evaluation of the CoREN, examining its progress towards democratic, long-term co-production and t

Perceptions of the healthcare providers regarding acceptability and conduct of minimal invasive tissue sampling (MITS) to identify the cause of death in under-five deaths and stillbirths in North India: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: India contributes the highest share of under-five and neonatal deaths and stillbirths globally. Diagnostic autopsy, although useful for cause of death identification, have limited acceptance. Minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) is an alternative to autopsy for identification of the cause of death (CoD). A formative research linked to pilot MITS implementation was conducted to document the perceptions and attitudes of the healthcare professionals and the barriers for implementation. METHODS: This exploratory qualitative study conducted at a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi
