The widespread use of Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) as a substitute flame retardant in various commercial products has raised global concerns for its health risks. Previously, we found that gestational and lactational TPhP exposure disturbed lipid metabolism and gut microbiota in offspring sex-dependently. In this study, we further explored the prenatal TPhP exposure on lipid metabolism in male offspring, and the role of gut-bile acids-liver axis in it. The results showed that gestational TPhP exposure would induce hyperlipidemia in male offspring, it dose-dependently increased the weight of body

BACKGROUND: Unstable angina pectoris (UAP) is a type of Coronary artery disease (CAD) characterized by a series of angina symptoms. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) system may be related to CAD. However, the correlation between the IGF-1 system, metabolism, and gut microbiota has not been studied. In the present study, we investigated the alterations of serum IGF-1 system, metabolomics, and gut microbiota in patients with UAP.
METHODS: Serum and stool samples from healthy volunteers and UAP patients were collected. Serum metabolomics, PAPP-A, IGF-1, IGFBP-4, STC2, hs-CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) induce significant damage to the small intestine, which is accompanied by changes in intestinal bacteria (dysbiosis) and bile acids. However, it is still a question of debate whether besides mucosal inflammation also other factors, such as direct antibacterial effects or delayed peristalsis, contribute to NSAID-induced dysbiosis. Here we aimed to assess whether ketorolac, an NSAID lacking direct effects on gut bacteria, has any significant impact on intestinal microbiota and bile acids in the absence of mucosal inflammation. We also add

The intestinal microbiota plays an essential role in the metabolism and immune competence of chickens from the first day after hatching. In modern production systems, chicks are isolated from adult chickens, instead hatching in a clean environment. As a result, chicks are colonized by environmental bacteria, including potential pathogens. There is a need to investigate methods by which chicks can be exposed to a more appropriate microbial community at hatching. Such methods must be easy to apply in a hatchery and produce consistent results. The development of the intestinal microbiota of chick

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to distinguish between acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and unstable angina (UA) due to their similar clinical features. In recent years, studies have shown that microbiomes have great potential in distinguishing diseases. The purpose of this study is to describe the composition of serum microbiome in the AMI and UA by 16S rDNA sequencing.
METHODS: Based on the high-throughput detection platform and 16S rDNA amplification sequencing technology, this study detected the blood microbial composition of 55 patients with AMI and 62 patients with UA. Alpha diversity and

Plant defense responses to biotic stresses are complex biological processes, all governed by sophisticated molecular regulations. Induced systemic resistance (ISR) is one of these defense mechanisms where beneficial bacteria or fungi prime plants to resist pathogens or pest attacks. In ISR, the defense arsenal in plants remains dormant and it is only triggered by an infection, allowing a better allocation of plant resources. Our group recently described that the well-known beneficial bacterium Paraburkholderia phytofirmans PsJN is able to induce Arabidopsis thaliana resistance to Pseudomonas s

Two strains of trichloroethylene (TCE)-degrading bacteria were isolated from soils at polluted and unpolluted sites. The isolates, strains TE26(T) and K6, showed co-substrate-independent TCE-degrading activity. TCE degradation was accelerated by preincubation with tetrachloroethylene, cis-dichloroethylene (DCE) and 1,1-DCE. TCE-degrading activities of strains TE26(T) and K6 were 0.23, 0.24 micromol min(-1) g(-1) dry cells, respectively. 16S rDNA sequences of strains TE26(T) and K6 were almost identical (99.7% similarity), and most closely related to Ralstonia basilensis (ATCC17697(T)) (98.5% s

This study integrated environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding, conventional bacteriology, histopathology, water quality variables, and remote sensing indices to investigate how environmental gradients are associated with pathogen-associated taxa communities and influence Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) health in Kitchener Drain, Northern Egypt. Physicochemical analyses revealed elevated nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a (59.21-226.35 µg L⁻1), with localized hypoxia (dissolved oxygen as low as 2.14 mg L⁻1 in site 2). High-throughput 16S rRNA metabarcoding revealed microbial communities

Phenolic compounds are implied in plant-microorganisms interaction and may be induced in response to plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs). Among PGPR, the beneficial bacterium Paraburkholderia phytofirmans PsJN was previously described to stimulate the growth of plants and to induce a better adaptation to both abiotic and biotic stresses. This study aimed to investigate the impact of PsJN on grapevine secondary metabolism. For this purpose, gene expression (qRT-PCR) and profiling of plant secondary metabolites (UHPLC-UV/DAD-MS QTOF) from both grapevine root and leaves were compared bet

Plant lignin is regarded as an important source for soil humic substances (HSs). Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether microbial metabolism on lignin is related to the genesis of unique HS biological activities (e.g., direct plant stimulation). Here, selected white-rot fungi (i.e., Ganoderma lucidum and Irpex lacteus) and plant litter- or mountain soil-derived microbial consortia were exploited to structurally modify lignin, followed by assessing the plant-stimulatory activity of the lignin-derived products. Parts solubilized by microbial metabolism on lignin were proven to exhibit organic m

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem, with annual deaths set to pass 10 million by 2050 if current trends continue. Sequencing untreated wastewater has been proposed as a strategy to understand population-level resistance, and water reclamation facilities (WRFs) have been identified as a control point for environmental dissemination of resistant bacteria. Understanding AMR dynamics across WRFs can provide insight into how WRFs may alter the resistome and requires advanced molecular tools that elucidate host bacteria, especially for mobile resistance carried on plasmids. To that

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a signaling molecule that is toxic at elevated concentrations. In eukaryotes, it is cleared via a mitochondrial sulfide oxidation pathway, which comprises sulfide quinone oxidoreductase, persulfide dioxygenase (PDO), rhodanese, and sulfite oxidase and converts H2S to thiosulfate and sulfate. Natural fusions between the non-heme iron containing PDO and rhodanese, a thiol sulfurtransferase, exist in some bacteria. However, little is known about the role of the PDO-rhodanese fusion (PRF) proteins in sulfur metabolism. Herein, we report the kinetic properties and the crys

Burkholderia anthina is a pathogenic bacterial species belonging to the Burkholderiaceae family and it is mainly considered the etiological agent of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases associated with cystic fibrosis, due to being intrinsic antibiotic resistant making it difficult to treat pulmonary infections. Hence increased rate of antibiotic-resistant bacterial species vaccine development is the priority to tackle this problem. In research work, we designed a multi-epitope-based vaccine construct against B. anthina using reverse vaccinology immunoinformatics and biophysical approaches.
