Epilepsy, retarded growth and onchocerciasis, in two areas of different endemicity of onchocerciasis in Burundi.

A high prevalence of epilepsy (up to 1.3%) was observed in an area hyperendemic for onchocerciasis in the province of Bururi, Burundi. Following this observation, epileptics and controls were examined in 2 communes (administrative units) with different endemicity for onchocerciasis. Altogether, onchocerciasis was more frequent in epileptics (81.8%) than in controls from the same households (68.3%; P < 0.05). This difference was more marked in the hyperendemic area. Other possible causes of epilepsy, including cysticercosis, were infrequent (18 possible cases among 110 epileptics). During this

Characterising household transmission dynamics of clade Ib mpox in Burundi: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of intrahousehold transmission dynamics of clade Ib mpox, especially in recently epidemic African contexts, is scarce. Our study aimed to quantify household transmission patterns of clade Ib mpox in Burundi, with a focus on children. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in two health districts, Bujumbura and Kayanza, in Burundi from Jan 23 to March 20, 2025, enrolling 88 laboratory-confirmed primary mpox cases and 432 of their household contacts. We estimated household secondary attack rates (SARs), serial intervals, and basic reproduction number (R0), includ

Monkeypox Clade Ib virus introduction into Burundi: first findings, July to mid-August 2024.

We describe cases with monkeypox virus (MPXV) Clade Ib in Burundi from their first detection in July until 20 August 2024. Testing 442 people with vesicular lesions confirmed 170 cases (98 male; 72 female), 82 (48%) being < 15 years old. Differential diagnosis of the first 30 individuals testing MPXV negative revealed chickenpox in 20. Cases occurred in 26 of 49 Burundi health districts, but mostly in Bujumbura Nord (88/170; 67%). Case-derived MPXV genetic sequences from Burundi and South-Kivu (Democratic Republic of the Congo), clustered together in phylogenetic analysis.

The lead-up to epidemic transmission: malaria trends and control interventions in Burundi 2000 to 2019.

Burundi has experienced an increase in malaria cases since 2000, reaching 843,000 cases per million inhabitants in 2019, a more than twofold increase compared to the early 2000s. Burundi thus contrasts the decreasing number of cases in many other African countries. To evaluate the impact of malaria control on this increase, data on interventions from 2000 to 2019 were compiled. Over this period, the number of health facilities increased threefold, and the number of tests 20-fold. The test positivity rate remained stable at around 50-60% in most years. Artemisinin-based combination therapy was

[The prevalence of HIV and risk behavior of prostitutes living in 2 populous regions of Bujumbura (Burundi)].

This study was designed to determine the prevalence of HIV infection and associated high-risk behavior in female sex workers in two areas of Bujumbura (Bwiza and Musanga), Burundi. Between June 15th and July 15th 1993, 320 female sex workers responded to an anonymous questionnaire and gave a blood sample on filter paper for detection of HIV antibodies. The mean age of the prostitutes was 24.6 (+/- 5.9) years (range 15 to 46). The HIV infection rate was 42.2% (135 of the 320). Univariate analysis showed that the proportion of HIV-infected female sex workers was higher in the Musaga area than in

Fluctuation of schistosome circulating antigen levels in urine of individuals with Schistosoma mansoni infection in Burundi.

We studied the fluctuations of schistosome circulating antigens in urine as compared with fecal egg counts in 60 Burundese individuals infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Levels of circulating anodic antigen (CAA) and circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) in the urine were determined by quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Fecal samples were simultaneously collected and examined with duplicate Kato-Katz slides. Significant correlations were consistently found between circulating antigen levels in urine and fecal egg counts. Although both antigen levels and egg output fluctuated, there

[Aspects of sexually transmissible diseases in young children in Burundi: gonorrhea caused by sexual abuse].

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the existence of sexually transmitted diseases secondary to sexual abuse inflicted on young infants in Black Africa. A total of 230 files involving infants presenting leucorrhea or urethral discharge were reviewed in Bujumbura (Burundi) to select only cases with bacteriologically documented gonorrhea. A total of 2 such cases were identified during the period from 1987 to 1992. There were 20 girls and 5 boys with a mean age of 6.4 years. In 4 cases, rape was proven. In 9 cases the contaminator could not be identified, but in 12 cases medical and lega

[Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis and dissemination in patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus in Bujumbura (Burundi)].

Scattered and extra pulmonary tuberculosis patients coinfected with HIV represent in Bujumbura (Burundi) more than 56% of tuberculosis cases. The high prevalence of these forms could be explained partly by the hospital recruitment, therefore by patients already strongly immunocompromised. Performing further examinations as abdominal echography, ganglionic biopsy (or firstly a puncture sucking procedure) permit to reveal multifocal affections. These examinations provide valuable diagnostic arguments specially among the negative bacteriological forms.

Molecular characterization of extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales from urinary tract infections in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: The production of β-lactamases by the Enterobacterales family is currently the leading cause of antibiotic resistance. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for 25% of all infections, and UTIs caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-PE) constitute a serious public health concern in children and adult patients. The aim of this study was to describe the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and molecular characteristics of ESBL-PE isolates from UTIs in Burundi. METHODS: A laboratory-based cross-sectional study involving 247 isolates of Enterobact

Syndromic cholera diagnosis masks diverse causes of diarrhoeal disease in Burundi revealed by portable metagenomics.

BACKGROUND: Cholera outbreaks remain a major public-health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, where diagnostic capacity is limited and clinical case definitions are non-specific and re ly heavily on syndromic diagnosis. Rapid identification of Vibrio cholerae is critical, yet cholera-suspected diarrhoea can have multiple infectious causes not captured by targeted diagnostics. METHODS: We evaluated a mobile, culture-independent metagenomic sequencing workflow for on-site detection of gastrointestinal pathogens directly from faecal samples in Burundi. The offline workflow combined long-read Oxfor

Preventing Childhood Sexual Abuse Related Mental Health Deterioration Using a Narrative Family Intervention in Burundi.

Despite the severe impact of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on trauma-related disorders, preventive interventions are scarce, especially in (post-)conflict regions. We developed and evaluated a narrative family communication approach for sexually abused Burundian female children and adolescents (N = 102). The intervention cohort (n = 55) received psychoeducation, parental skill training, and preventive narrative exposure therapy. Intervention participants reported improved parental acceptance at 3- and 12-month follow-ups (3mFUP, 12mFUP), and showed greater improvement in overall mental health b
