Use of alternative plant resources by common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in the semi-arid caatinga scrub forests of northeastern Brazil.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is amply distributed in the Brazilian Northeast, but little is known of its ecology in the semi-arid Caatinga scrublands. The present study provides the first detailed data on the composition of the diet of C. jacchus in Caatinga ecosystems, derived from observations at four sites in the state of Sergipe. While exudate sources were gouged at all four sites in a manner typical of the species, fruit was the principal component of the diet at the main study site during most months, and a number of unusual items were eaten, including leaves, and the reprodu

The effect of light supplementation on the changes in outer and inner fruit quality of different Selenicereus spp. cultivars.

BACKGROUND: Selenicereus spp., belonging to the Cactaceae family, produces pitaya, a fruit recognized for its exotic appearance and rich phytochemical composition. In regions with shorter photoperiods, flowering and fruit development are limited, making light supplementation a promising strategy. However, its effects on fruit quality, particularly across different cultivars, remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of LED light supplementation during flowering on the physicochemical characteristics and bioactive compounds of pitaya fruits. RESULTS: Plants of

A novel porous adsorbentbased on cactus powder/ionic liquid for the removal of nimesulide from wastewater.

This work proposes the fabrication of a novel adsorbent based on agro-waste resources with functional adsorption properties to remove a recalcitrant pollutant, such as Nimesulide, from water effluents. An aerogel system, produced through supercritical carbon dioxide drying, was made of cactus powder and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ionic liquid. The use of ionic liquid allowed to obtain a 3D porous structure showing a mean pore size of 0.12 μm. Its incorporation into cactus-based aerogel improved the adsorption capacity, allowing a drug removal of 88% compared to pristine aerogel, w

Inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase after 2-propanol exposure in different geographic races of Drosophila mojavensis: lack of evidence for selection at the Adh-2 locus.

High frequencies of the fast allele of alcohol dehydrogenase-2 (Adh-2F) are found in populations of Drosophila mojavensis that inhabit the Baja California peninsula (race BII) whereas the slow allele (Adh-2S) predominates at most other localities within the species' geographic range. Race BII flies utilize necrotic tissue of pitaya agria cactus (Stenocereus gummosus) which contains high levels of 2-propanol, whereas flies from most other localities utilize different cactus hosts in which 2-propanol levels are low. To test if 2-propanol acts as a selective force on Adh-2 genotype, or whether so
