Fixation of comminuted distal radius fractures with a mixture of calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate cement.

Distal radius fracture alignment and stabilization can be a surgical challenge in the face of severe comminution and bone loss. We describe a technique using a calcium phosphate/sulfate bone cement, as an adjunct to internal fixation. This bone cement is biocompatible, osteoconductive, and sets quickly with an isothermic reaction. The use of bone cement eliminates the need for primary autologous bone grafting and allows for easier reduction and retention of reduction at the time of surgery. Bone cement is employed for the following purposes in comminuted fractures: (1) to fill a void due to lo

Interaction of bovine gallbladder mucin and calcium-binding protein: effects on calcium phosphate precipitation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Gallstones consist of calcium salts and cholesterol crystals, arrayed on a matrix of gallbladder mucin (GBM), and regulatory proteins like calcium-binding protein (CBP). To determine if interactions between CBP and GBM follow a biomineralization scheme, their mutual binding and effects on CaHPO4 precipitation were studied. METHODS: Binding of CBP to GBM was assessed by inhibition of the fluorescence of the complex of GBM with bis-1,8-anilinonaphthalene sulfonic acid (bis-ANS). The effects of the proteins on precipitation of CaHPO4 were assessed by nephelometry and gravimetr

Colonic intussusception secondary to a calcium phosphate bezoar in a child receiving calcium carbonate for hyperphosphatemia.

We report a case of a calcium phosphate bezoar resulting in colonic intussusception in a boy with chronic renal failure who received calcium carbonate to control hyperphosphatemia. Because of concerns about aluminum-related disease in patients receiving aluminum hydroxide phosphate binders, calcium carbonate is being used more frequently to manage phosphate retention in renal failure. The development of bezoars may complicate this new form of therapy.

Nucleic Acids as Emerging Regulators of Calcium Phosphate Biomineralization.

Calcium phosphate biomineralization is a highly regulated process that underlies the formation of vertebrate mineralized tissues. While proteins have long been recognized as the principal regulators of mineral formation, accumulating experimental evidence suggests that nucleic acids may also contribute to this process through mechanisms that remain largely unexplored. Their negatively charged phosphate backbone, molecular structural versatility, and ability to interact with calcium phosphate phases make nucleic acids attractive candidates for regulating mineral nucleation, growth, and phase tr

Electrochemically Assisted Calcium Silicate Utilization for Phosphate Recovery.

Electrochemical pH-swing systems have demonstrated significant potential across diverse applications, including chemical production, carbon capture, and water treatment. However, conventional systems predominantly depend on costly ion exchange membranes, which are often plagued by fouling and scaling challenges. Here, we introduce an ingenious electrochemically assisted calcium silicate (EACS) system capable of achieving a rapid pH swing from 8.5 to 10 within 1 h through the in situ utilization of H+ and OH- ions, eliminating the need for membranes. The EACS system incorporates a novel 3D-prin

Mechanical and biological properties of electrodeposited calcium phosphate coatings.

Calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings were electrochemically deposited on titanium substrates. By increasing the electrodeposition time (from 1 to 30 min), the coating thickness increases but also the surface morphology of the CaP coatings is greatly affected going from smooth to plate-like, featuring elongated plates, ribbon-like and finally sharp needle structures. Micro-stretch tests reveal that, regardless of the coating morphology and thickness, the electrodeposited CaP coatings have strong adhesion with the titanium substrates and their failure mode is cohesive failure. The effects of differe

The demise of calcium-based phosphate binders-is this appropriate for children?

In children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) optimal control of mineral and bone disorder (MBD) is essential not only for the prevention of debilitating skeletal complications and for achieving adequate growth, but also for preserving long-term cardiovascular health. The growing skeleton is particularly vulnerable to the effects of CKD, and bone pain, fractures and deformities are common in children on dialysis. Defective bone mineralisation has been linked with ectopic calcification, which in turn leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Despite national and international guidelines for

Methazolamide calcium phosphate nanoparticles in an ocular delivery system.

A new system for the local delivery of methazolamide to the eye has been developed based on calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoparticles. The methazolamide loaded CaP nanoparticles were prepared through the formation of an inorganic core of CaP and further adsorption of the methazolamide. The maximum loading of methazolamide studied using UV-vis spectrophotometry was about 0.2% (w/w). The drug-loaded particles had a negative surface charge at about -30 mV while their mean particle diameter was estimated to be 256.4 nm. In vitro release studies demonstrated diffusion-controlled release of methazolamid

Calcium, phosphate and parathyroid metabolism in kidney transplanted patients.

INTRODUCTION: Impaired kidney function is common in kidney-transplanted patients and complications of chronic kidney disease (CKD), such as mineral and bone disorders (MBD) are also prevalent in this population. Similarly to other stages of CKD, increasing evidence supports the association between MBD and cardiovascular risk after kidney transplantation as well. Still, little is known about the prevalence, clinical correlates of MBD and its management in transplanted patients. In this study, we aimed to examine the characteristics of MBD and its associations with clinical parameters in a large

Calcium and phosphate balance in adolescents on home nocturnal haemodialysis.

Studies in adults show superior serum phosphate and parathyroid hormone (PTH) control on slow nocturnal haemodialysis (NHD) compared with conventional haemodialysis. We studied the progress of four children aged 12, 13, 14 and 16 years after they had been initiated on NHD. The follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 20 months. Biochemical indices of bone metabolism were collected prospectively. All four children were initially dialysed against a 1.5 mmol/l calcium bath. In two patients, owing to biochemical hypocalcaemic episodes, the dialysate calcium concentration was increased to 1.75 mmol

Suitability of calcium phosphate cement for injection laryngoplasty in rabbits.

Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) consists of powder and liquid, which become an injectable paste after mixing, self-hardening and recrystallizing to calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) after injection into a living body. In this study, we investigated the suitability of CPC as an injectable material for injection laryngoplasty using rabbits. All rabbits underwent left recurrent laryngeal nerve section and injection laryngoplasty with CPC. At 7 days, scanning electron microscopic findings revealed that complete recrystallization from CPC to CaHA was achieved in the larynx. At 1, 3, and 6 months, injec

Calcium phosphate microcrystal deposition in the human intervertebral disc.

A variety of crystals have been identified in both normal and pathological connective tissues. Calcium phosphate 'cuboidal' microcrystal deposition has been found, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in femoral articular cartilage, where they are distributed as a band 5-50 microm beneath the articular surface. These cuboid microcrystals have been identified as magnesium whitlockite. Our objective was to investigate their presence in the human intervertebral disc. In this study, two degenerate and 15 scoliotic discs were examined using light microscopy and TEM techniques to determine

Alterations in the sensing and transport of phosphate and calcium by differentiating chondrocytes.

During endochondral bone formation and fracture healing, cells committed to chondrogenesis undergo a temporally restricted program of differentiation that is characterized by sequential changes in their phenotype and gene expression. This results in the manufacture, remodeling, and mineralization of a cartilage template on which bone is laid down. Articular chondrocytes undergo a similar but restricted differentiation program that does not proceed to mineralization, except in pathologic conditions such as osteoarthritis. The pathogenesis of disorders of cartilage development and metabolism, in

Injectable calcium phosphate in the treatment of distal radial fractures.

An injectable material which hardened in situ to form a carbonated hydroxyapatite, Norian SRS (Norian Corp., Cupertino, USA), was used as the only treatment of unstable distal radial fractures in six patients. Except for an external dorsal splint for 2 weeks, no other treatment was used. The material maintained reduction except in one case in which there were technical problems during hardening and the material fragmented postoperatively. By 1 year all patients had a satisfactory clinical outcome. There was an early return of motion. The possibility of mobilization 1 or 2 weeks after the opera

Remineralization of root lesions with concentrated calcium and phosphate solutions.

Remineralization of enamel lesions in vitro by use of sequential treatments with an alkaline (pH 9) phosphate (1 mol/L) solution and slightly acidic (pH 6) calcium (1 mol/L) solution was reported to be relatively ineffective. An analysis of the diffusion processes that may occur during the remineralization treatments suggested that the driving force for diffusion of Ca into the lesion can be increased by making the calcium solution more alkaline than the phosphate solution. In the present study this modified treatment procedure was evaluated for remineralizing root lesions in vitro. Results sh

Effect of calcium phosphate ceramic implants on tooth eruption.

This study evaluated the effects of calcium phosphate ceramics, hydroxylapatite, and tricalcium phosphate implants on tooth eruption and development. Forty kittens, three to four months of age, had their primary right second and third mandibular premolars extracted and the sockets packed with either hydroxylapatite, tricalcium phosphate, autogenous cancellous marrow, or nothing. The results of this study indicated that the use of a nonresorbable hydroxylapatite for grafting resulted in impediment of tooth eruption and distortion of crown development. This was in contrast to the tricalcium phos
