Exploring non-alcohol-based disinfectant: virucidal efficacy of arginine and Zinc chloride against feline calicivirus.

INTRODUCTION: Norovirus, a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, is notably stable in the environment due to its non-enveloped nature. In the absence of effective vaccines or treatments, disinfection remains the primary prevention strategy, highlighting the importance of virucidal efficacy in household care products. Conventional effective disinfectants are predominantly alcohol-based, but alcohol is known to pose health risks, such as skin irritation. This study investigates a non-alcohol-based alternative, specifically a combination of Arginine and Zinc chloride (ZnCl2). METHODS

Multiple novel caliciviruses identified from stoats (Mustela erminea) in the United Kingdom.

The Caliciviridae family, comprising positive-sense RNA viruses, is characterised by its non-enveloped, small virions, broad host range, and notable tendency for host switching. These viruses are primarily associated with gastroenteric disease, though they can lead to haemorrhagic or respiratory infections. Our study employed a metagenomics analysis of faecal samples from stoats (Mustela erminea), identifying two novel calicivirus species, named stoat vesivirus and stoat valovirus. Stoat vesivirus was identified in three samples (ST008, ST006, ST004), exhibiting a genome wide nucleotide identi

An outbreak of norovirus infection in a bone marrow transplant unit.

BACKGROUND: Norovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Caliciviridae family. METHODS: Our observational cohort study aimed to describe a nosocomial outbreak of norovirus on a bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit. RESULTS: Six of 8 BMT patients with increased liquid stools tested positive for norovirus: 4 had new onset diarrhea; 2 had acute exacerbations of chronic diarrhea caused by graft versus host disease. Eight non-BMT inpatients had norovirus infection, but 7 of these were community acquired; cumulative incidence rates in BMT and non-BMT units were 26% and 0.16%, respectivel

Transcriptomic analysis reveals the mechanism of viral modulation of host immunity facilitating calicivirus replication in Pelteobagrus fulvidraco.

Yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), an economically significant aquaculture species in East Asia, faces substantial threats from pathogens, with yellow catfish calicivirus (YcCV) being the primary causative agent of spring outbreaks leading to massive mortality and economic losses. Although the YcCV genome has been fully characterized, the immune response mechanisms of P. fulvidraco during infection remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted histopathological and transcriptomic analyses of head kidney from YcCV-infected fish at 1 and 5 days post-infection (dpi). Histopathological analy

Case-Fatality Risk of Norovirus, England, 2022-2025.

Norovirus incidence increased in England during 2022-2025, when GII.17 replaced GII.4 as the dominant genotype. By using nationally linked norovirus testing and fatality data, we found age and care setting, but not genotype, were associated with case-fatality risk. Increased incidence might reflect changes in transmissibility or population immunity.

Multiple outbreaks of norovirus caused by persistent transmission in a hospitality setting in Victoria, Australia, 2023.

This report describes unusually persistent transmission of norovirus in a hospitality setting in Victoria, Australia. In September 2023, the Victorian State Government Department of Health was notified of six gastroenteritis outbreaks associated with events held at a single function venue. Genomically identical norovirus genogroup II (GII) was detected from cases in five of the outbreaks. No statistically significant association with illness was found for any food item. Information collected through staff interviews provided evidence of food handlers and wait staff continuing to work while inf

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) and rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV): a review.

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a calicivirus of the genus Lagovirus that causes rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) in adult European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). First described in China in 1984, the virus rapidly spread worldwide and is nowadays considered as endemic in several countries. In Australia and New Zealand where rabbits are pests, RHDV was purposely introduced for rabbit biocontrol. Factors that may have precipitated RHD emergence remain unclear, but non-pathogenic strains seem to pre-date the appearance of the pathogenic strains suggesting a key role for the compre

Detection of calicivirus from fecal samples from children with acute gastroenteritis in the West Central region of Brazil.

The objective of this study was to describe the circulation of caliciviruses in the West Central region of Brazil and its correlation with children's gender and age, as well as with the year and months of the sample collection. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect the human calicivirus genome in 1006 fecal samples that were collected in Goiânia (n = 696) and Brasília (n = 310). Viral RNA was detected in 8.6% of the samples. No significant difference in viral prevalence was found regarding gender, age or year of the sample. However, it was observed that in Goi

Detection and characterization of human caliciviruses in hospitalized children with acute gastroenteritis in Blantyre, Malawi.

The human caliciviruses (HuCVs), including Norovirus and Sapovirus, are recognized causes of acute gastroenteritis in children and adults. A 1-year study was undertaken in Blantyre, Malawi, to examine the prevalence, and genetic diversity, of human caliciviruses (HuCVs) amongst children under 5 years of age hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis. Using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), combined with nucleotide sequencing of the RT-PCR products, HuCVs were detected in 34/398 (8.5%) of children. Twelve (35.3%) of the children were co-infected with additional enteric

Recent epidemiological status of feline upper respiratory infections in Japan.

Epidemiology of upper respiratory infections of cats was studied. Nasal, ocular, and oral swabs collected from 111 cats presented at animal hospitals during the past 2.5 years were examined. Twenty-four (21.6%) and 4 (3.6%) cats were diagnosed as feline calicivirus (FCV) infection and feline viral rhinotracheitis, respectively, indicating FCV is more prevalent than feline herpesvirus-1, which revealed a considerable shift from data obtained in 1970s. Cat sera immunized by using vaccines containing either FCV F9 or 255 strains neutralized 42.9% and 66.7% of the FCV isolates, respectively. Chlam

Variation of rabbit serum IgA in relation to RHDV vaccination and infection: implications for serological diagnosis and epidemiological investigations.

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly pathogenic and contagious disease caused by RHD virus (RHDV) and RHDV type 2 (RHDV2), two distinct Lagovirus europaeus belonging to the Caliciviridae family. Serological investigations have been widely and successfully used on both wild and farmed rabbit populations. However, interpreting serological data remains uncertain, especially for IgA results in previously infected or vaccinated rabbits. The first part of this study reports the results of two independent vaccination experiments that demonstrated (a) serum IgA was present only in trace amoun

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease: The devastating impact of a highly contagious virus on rabbit populations.

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly contagious viral infection in rabbits that can occur in acute, subacute, chronic, or peracute forms and is not fatal. It is caused by RHD virus (RHDV), a member of the genus Lagovirus in the family Caliciviridae, with variants including RHDV1, RHDV1a, and RHDV2. First identified in 1984 in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in China, RHD has since been reported in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central America, and North America. Both innate and adaptive immune responses contribute to host defense, although rapid disease progression can limit adaptive

Two decades of occurrence of non-pathogenic rabbit lagoviruses in Italy and their genomic characterization.

Lagoviruses are viruses of the Caliciviridae family affecting lagomorphs. Both pathogenic and non-pathogenic lagoviruses affect the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), and they are phylogenetically distinguished. Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV/GI.1) and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus-2 (RHDV-2/GI.2) belong to the first group, while in the second group, several genotypes of Rabbit Calicivirus (RCV/GI.3-GI.4) are present. The first RCV strain was described in Italy in 1996, and since then, several RCV strains have been characterised in Europe and Australia. RCVs, different from th
