Mobile phone call reminders to improve oral rehydration salt and zinc adherence for acute diarrhea in children: a single-center, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Low-osmolarity oral rehydration salt (ORS) and zinc therapy effectively manage diarrhea in children under five years of age, offering both short- and long-term benefits. Despite this, caregivers' adherence to ORS and zinc is often unsatisfactory due to factors such as forgetfulness, resolution of symptoms, and underestimation of the disease's severity. This study assessed the effect of mobile call reminders on ORS and zinc tablet adherence among children with acute diarrhea in a secondary-level health facility in Kwara State, Nigeria. METHODS: Using an open-label, randomized contr

Cervical saccular limited dorsal myeloschisis, so-called "cervical myelomeningocele": long-term follow-up of a single-center series and systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical saccular limited dorsal myeloschisis (LDM), previously so-called "cervical myelomeningocele," is a rare spinal dysraphism. Although the pathogenesis of true myelomeningocele is primary neurulation failure, LDM results from a delayed abnormality during the final stages of neurulation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcome of these patients and to assess the correlation of outcomes with the level and type of lesion. Also, pooled data from the literature on similar lesions were systematically reviewed. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at Children's Medi

Effects of standardized patient simulation combined with online case-based precision learning on early on-call anxiety among junior pediatric surgeons: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Junior pediatric surgeons often experience marked anxiety when undertaking independent on-call duties for the first time, largely due to limited clinical experience, high decision-making pressure, and heightened sensitivity to patient safety. Traditional lecture-based teaching models may be insufficient in preparing trainees for complex, dynamic, and high-risk on-call situations. This study aimed to investigate whether a precision teaching model combining emergency-oriented standardized patient simulation (SPS) with online case-based learning (CBL) could alleviate on-call-related a

Cluster-randomised-controlled trial evaluating the impact of implementing the Canadian C-Spine Rule in prehospital cervical spine trauma care by the French Emergency Medical Call Center: IPSTRAUC study - a protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In France, cervical spine trauma frequently results in systematic prehospital immobilisation with a cervical collar, despite a low incidence of clinically significant injuries. This practice may lead to unnecessary discomfort, delayed care and emergency department (ED) overcrowding. The Canadian C-Spine Rule (CCR) is a validated tool for identifying patients at low risk of cervical injury but its use is currently limited to ED settings. An adapted version (CCRa) has been validated in Canada for prehospital use, demonstrating safe reduction in immobilisation rates. This study aims

Patient concerns regarding antidepressant drug–drug interactions: a retrospective analysis using data from a medicines call centre.

Introduction Antidepressant use has increased over the last two decades, with Australia and New Zealand among the highest antidepressant users in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Comorbidity and polypharmacy are common in antidepressant users, increasing the likelihood of interaction-related adverse drug events, which are frequently preventable. Aim We aimed to identify, profile, and analyse potential antidepressant drug-drug interactions in information-seeking antidepressant users. Methods We retrospectively analysed antidepressant-related drug-drug int

Feasibility and preliminary results of a call centre delivered continuing care intervention following residential alcohol and other drug treatment.

INTRODUCTION: To help reduce relapse rates following alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment, continuing care interventions have been recommended. Previous continuing care interventions have incorporated telephone and face-to-face sessions to help promote participant engagement. The study was conducted as a randomised controlled feasibility study and examined a call centre delivered continuing care intervention for people leaving residential rehabilitation services. METHODS: Participants were attending AOD residential treatment services in NSW, Australia (N = 154). Participants were randomised

Emergency calls from migrants to an emergency call centre: A retrospective epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate migrants' inclination to call emergency call centres. Records of calls made to an emergency call centre by migrants of different age groups and nationalities were reviewed retrospectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 4481 emergency call records from migrants of 33 different nationalities was evaluated between 2017 and 2021. RESULTS: Migrants called the emergency call centres mostly for medical reasons, and most of their calls resulted in referrals to hospitals. Pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting were among the most common medical reasons for emergen

A move to a health centre: the effect on home visiting, repeat prescribing and patients' choice of transport.

A group of general practitioners recorded data about their work before and after moving into a health centre. A group of doctors who did not enter the health centre made equivalent observations for comparison.Patients of the health centre doctors increased their use of public transport by 13 per cent; the ;no-entry' group of doctors did not record a similar increase. A 27 per cent reduction in home visits was thought to be a direct result of entry into the health centre, contributing factors being, in all probability, availability of public transport and the provision of a pharmacy. An increas

"Am I a candidate for magic mushrooms?" A mystery shopper study of Oregon psilocybin service centers.

INTRODUCTION: Oregon is the first US state to permit supervised psilocybin services through a nonmedical, wellness-based model. We examined what prospective clients with psychiatric histories encounter when contacting service centers, including how staff communicate about safety, eligibility, and cost. METHODS: We conducted a mystery shopper study of 26 licensed service centers in Oregon (7/2025-9/2025), 4 of which closed before calls began, leaving 22 in the sample. We reviewed websites and conducted 2 waves of scripted phone calls portraying adults with depression. Website and call data wer

Evaluation of regional and nonregional poison centers.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether regional poison centers handle a particular poisoning situation better than nonregional centers do. Informed consent was obtained from 15 regional and 15 nonregional poison centers. A case involving salicylate ingestion by a three-year-old child was presented twice (one day call and one night call) to each center. Those answering the phone at the regional centers asked more information-gathering questions than did those at the nonregional centers (P less than 0.01) and were more proficient in their history taking (P less than 0.01). Nonregiona

Identification of Nonfatal Strangulation by 911 Dispatchers: Suggestions for Advances Toward Evidence-Based Prosecution.

Research highlights the need for systematic law enforcement training on nonfatal strangulation in domestic violence situations to improve evidence-based prosecution of these violent felonies. However, most of this research focuses on the role of police officers in the safety response. Although often overlooked, this research examines the role of 911 dispatchers, who are many times the first person the victim calls for assistance. This study examines official domestic violence records, gathered through a partnership with a County Sheriff's agency, to determine whether domestic violence strangul

Animal bites and stings reported by United States poison control centers, 2001-2005.

OBJECTIVE: There is not a single data source for information on the extent of nonfatal injuries inflicted by animals. Although individuals bitten or stung by animals may not visit a health care provider, they may call poison control centers (PCCs) for information. These centers are one source of information on the frequency of occurrence of injuries from animals. METHODS: The American Association of Poison Control Centers compiles an annual report of exposure calls to various agents, including chemicals, medications, animal bites and stings, plants, and use of antivenoms from their network of

Influence of On-Call Vascular Surgery Team and Off-Hour Effect on Survival after Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (rAAAs) represent a life-threatening emergency and carry a high community and in-hospital mortality, despite treatment and protocol advances. Identifying prognostic factors like the presence of on-call vascular surgery teams at first hospital admissions or times of hospital admissions can modify hospital protocols and mechanisms to ameliorate general outcomes. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of on-call vascular surgery teams and off-hour admissions on survival after rAAAs in Catalonia, Spain. METHODS: We used data from public h

AgentVis: Visual Analysis of Agent Behavior With Hierarchical Glyphs.

Glyphs representing complex behavior provide a useful and common means of visualizing multivariate data. However, due to their complex shape, overlapping, and occlusion of glyphs is a common and prominent limitation. This limits the number of discreet data tuples that can be displayed in a given image. Using a real-world application, glyphs are used to depict agent behavior in a call center. However, many call centers feature thousands of agents. A standard approach representing thousands of agents with glyphs does not scale. To accommodate the visualization incorporating thousands of glyphs w

Compulsory drug detention centers in East and Southeast Asia.

Over the last three decades in response to a rise in substance use in the region, many countries in East and Southeast Asia responded by establishing laws and policies that allowed for compulsory detention in the name of treatment for people who use drugs. These centers have recently come under international scrutiny with a call for their closure in a Joint Statement from United Nations entities in March 2012. The UN's response was a result of concern for human rights violations, including the lack of consent for treatment and due process protections for compulsory detention, the lack of gener

Web Monitoring as an Early Warning System: "Benadryl Challenge" Online Mentions Correlate With Diphenhydramine Overdoses Reported to US Poison Centers.

PURPOSE: Social media has propagated several "challenges" that engage primarily adolescents in life-threatening behaviors such as the "Benadryl Challenge," where participants film themselves ingesting large doses of diphenhydramine. Once shared online, these activities have the potential to propagate, leading to an increase in those seeking emergency healthcare. METHODS: This study correlated call volume from poison centers with online mentions of the Benadryl Challenge. Data was collected from the National Poison Data System (NPDS) and the RADARS Web Monitoring Program across July 1-December
