The plantarward oblique Chevron osteotomy: an optional method to treat hallux valgus with painful plantar callosities.

Hallux valgus (HV) is a foot deformity that can be treated with Chevron osteotomy, and a modified plantarward oblique osteotomy has been proposed in recent years. However, no research has focused on the correctional power of the osteotomy. The aim of this study was to examine the character of this plantarward oblique Chevron osteotomy (POCO) and to determine the rationale of this method.Radiographs and clinical data from 65 HV patients (77 feet) with painful callosities were evaluated. The intermetatarsal angle, hallux valgus angle, and relative height of the second metatarsal were measured, a

Can callosal angle (CA), anterior callosal angle (ACA), and Evans index be used as parameters to predict postnatal outcomes in fetuses with ventriculomegaly.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the callosal angle (CA), the anterior callosal angle (ACA) and the Evans Index in predicting poor prognosis in fetuses with cranial ventriculomegaly (VM) and contribute these parameters to the current literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of patients with fetal cranial VM. Fetal MRI was used to determine axial and coronal VP (posterior diameter of the lateral ventricle), ACA, CA, and Evans Index values. The antenatal and postnatal outcomes of VM were determined. The factors that predict

Structural Connectivity Analysis in Children with Segmental Callosal Agenesis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Segmental callosal agenesis is characterized by the absence of the intermediate callosal portion. We aimed to evaluate the structural connectivity of segmental callosal agenesis by using constrained spherical deconvolution tractography and connectome analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical-radiologic features of 8 patients (5 males; mean age, 3.9 years). Spherical deconvolution and probabilistic tractography were performed on diffusion data. Structural connectivity analysis, including summary network metrics, modularity analysis, and network consisten

Electrophysiological Correlates of Morphological Neuroplasticity in Human Callosal Dysgenesis.

In search for the functional counterpart of the alternative Probst and sigmoid bundles, considered as morphological evidence of neuroplasticity in callosal dysgenesis, electroencephalographic (EEG) coherence analysis was combined with high resolution and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging. Data of two patients with callosal agenesis, plus two with typical partial dysgenesis with a remnant genu, and one atypical patient with a substantially reduced genu were compared to those of fifteen neurotypic controls. The interhemispheric EEG coherence between homologous nontemporal brain regions

Transient Visual Hallucinations due to Posterior Callosal Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke of the corpus callosum is uncommon, known to be associated with disturbance of higher brain function including hemifacial metamorphosia, but has never been reported to cause visual hallucinations. METHODS: We report on a case of a 71-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with a 3-day history of intermittent, formed visual hallucinations in the left visual field, often triggered by eye closure or darkness. RESULTS: Neurologic examination was normal including cognition and affect, visual acuity, and visual fields. Electroencephalogram was normal. Magnetic

Abnormal interhemispheric motor interactions in patients with callosal agenesis.

During unilateral hand movements the activity of the contralateral primary motor cortex (cM1) is increased while the activity of the ipsilateral M1 (iM1) is decreased. A potential explanation for this asymmetric activity pattern is transcallosal cM1-to-iM1 inhibitory control. To test this hypothesis, we examined interhemispheric motor inhibition in acallosal patients. We measured fMRI activity in iM1 and cM1 in acallosal patients during unilateral hand movements and compared their motor activity pattern to that of healthy controls. In controls, fMRI activation in cM1 was significantly higher t

Visual interhemispheric communication and callosal connections of the occipital lobes.

Callosal connections of the occipital lobes, coursing in the splenium of the corpus callosum, have long been thought to be crucial for interactions between the cerebral hemispheres in vision in both experimental animals and humans. Yet the callosal connections of the temporal and parietal lobes appear to have more important roles than those of the occipital callosal connections in at least some high-order interhemispheric visual functions. The partial intermixing and overlap of temporal, parietal and occipital callosal connections within the splenium has made it difficult to attribute the effe

Corpus callosal atrophy in premanifest and early Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Volumetric MRI studies have highlighted the pronounced loss of white matter in premanifest and early Huntington's Disease (HD). The current study focussed on the corpus callosum (CC) since it provides interhemispheric connections to vulnerable cortical areas. OBJECTIVES: To investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal group differences in CC volume and hypothesis-driven associations with three cognitive tasks. METHODS: Baseline and 24-month 3T MRI were analysed from 106 premanifest (PreHD), (59 preHD-A ≥10.8 and 47 preHD-B <10.8 years from predicted onset), 84 early HD (53 Stage

Age of onset and corpus callosal morphology in major depression.

BACKGROUND: The corpus callosum and related white matter projections have been implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD). Previously, we found a smaller genu in adolescents with MDD as compared to controls. To date, no study has examined the age of depression onset (adult vs. pediatric) as it relates to genu area in adults with MDD. METHODS: The area of the corpus callosum and its sub-regions were measured in 21 MDD subjects with pediatric age of onset (≤18 years) (29.48±7.62 years; 16 female, 5 male) and 31 MDD subjects with adult age of onset (≥19 years) (41.42±8.85; 17 female, 14 male)

Corpus callosal morphology in early onset adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the corpus callosum and related white matter projections have been implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD). Although MDD is as common in adolescence as in adulthood, few studies have examined youth near illness onset in order to determine the possible influence of atypical development on the pathophysiology of this disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The area of the corpus callosum and its sub-regions were measured in 16 subjects affected by MDD (16.24 ± 2.03 years) and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (16.52 ± 2.20 years) using magnetic resonance imagi

"Colossal" breakthrough: the callosal puncture as a precursor to third ventriculostomy.

BACKGROUND: In 1908, Anton and von Bramann proposed the Balkenstich method, a corpus callosum puncture which created a communication between the ventricle and subarachnoid space. This method offered the benefit of providing continuous CSF diversion without the implantation of cannula or other shunting devices, yet it received only slight reference in the literature of the time. It remained a novel and perhaps underutilized approach at the time Cushing began expanding his neurosurgical practice at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following IRB approval, and through the courte

Segregation and pathfinding of callosal axons through EphA3 signaling.

The corpus callosum, composed of callosal axons, is the largest structure among commissural connections in eutherian animals. Axon pathfinding of callosal neurons has been shown to be guided by intermediate targets, such as midline glial structures. However, it has not yet been understood completely how axon-axon interactions, another major mechanism for axon pathfinding, are involved in the pathfinding of callosal neurons. Here, we show that callosal axons from the medial and lateral regions of the mouse cerebral cortex pass through the dorsal and ventral parts, respectively, of the corpus ca

Language lateralization in individuals with callosal agenesis: an fMRI study.

Since the seminal work of Broca in 1861, it is well established that language is essentially processed in the left hemisphere. However, the origin of hemispheric specialization remains controversial. Some authors posit that language lateralization is genetically determined, while others have suggested that hemispheric specialization develops with age. Tenants of the latter view have further suggested that the adult pattern of left hemispheric specialization is achieved by means of callosal inhibition of homologous speech areas in the right hemisphere during ontogeny. According to this hypothes

An animal model of cortical and callosal pathology in multiple sclerosis.

The pathological and radiological hallmarks of multiple sclerosis (MS) include multiple demyelinated lesions disseminated throughout the white matter of the central nervous system (CNS). More recently, the cerebral cortex has been shown to be affected in MS, but the elucidation of events causing cortical demyelination has been hampered by the lack of animal models reflecting such human cortical pathology. In this report, we have described the presence of cortical gray matter and callosal white matter demyelinating lesions in the chronic experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse mod

Neuroradiological and neuropsychological study of a callosal infarct. A case report.

Corpus callosum infarcts are rare, constituing 0.6% of cerebral infarcts, most likely due to a rich blood supply from three main arterial systems. These infarcts may present with slowly evolving and non-localizing neurologic signs and symptoms that suggest the diagnosis of neoplasm rather than infarct. In addition, they may exhibit radiologic features more often associated with neoplasm, such as mass-like enhancement or extension across the midline. We describe a patient with corpus callosum infarct presenting with a non specific ataxia-like gait disorder, speech difficulty and left-side weakn

Callosal branches of the anterior cerebral artery: an anatomical report.

Although the morphology of the corpus callosum is well defined, the arterial supply of this structure has not been comprehensively studied. To elucidate this further, 40 cerebral hemispheres from 30 adult cadaveric brains were obtained. The anterior cerebral arteries were cannulated and injected with red latex. The following were observed and documented: (1) the number, diameter, and course of the arteries supplying the corpus callosum; (2) the territories vascularized by these arteries; (3) any variations of the callosal arteries. Short callosal arteries were present in 58 hemispheres (96.6%)

Decreased callosal thickness in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have revealed structural abnormalities in the brains of affected individuals. One of the most replicated alterations is a significantly smaller corpus callosum (CC), for which conflicting reports exist with respect to the affected callosal segments. METHODS: We applied novel surface-based geometrical modeling methods to establish the presence, direction, and exact location of callosal alterations in ADHD at high spatial resolution. For this purpose, we calculated the thickness of the CC at 100 equidistant mids

Occipital-callosal pathways in children: Validation and atlas development.

Diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tracking were used to measure fiber bundles connecting the two occipital lobes in 53 children of 7-12 years of age. Independent fiber bundle estimates originating from the two hemispheres converge onto the lower half of the splenium. This observation validates the basic methodology and suggests that most occipital-callosal fibers connect the two occipital lobes. Within the splenium, fiber bundles are organized in a regular pattern with respect to their cortical projection zones. Visual cortex dorsal to calcarine projects through a large band that fills much o

Callosal agenesis with cyst: a better understanding and new classification.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze imaging studies of 25 cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst to assess this malformation itself and associated anomalies. METHODS: CT (6 patients) and MRI (19 patients) were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were categorized according to morphologic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: Based on morphology, the patients were separated into two major types, each with subtypes. Type 1 cysts appear to be an extension or diverticulation of the third or lateral ventricles, whereas Type 2 are loculated and do not communicate with the ventric
