BACKGROUND: Myocarditis can develop as a complication of various infections and is most commonly linked to enterovirus infections. Myocarditis is rarely associated with bacterial infections; salmonellosis and shigellosis have been the most frequently reported bacterial cause. We report a case of myocarditis related to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old previously healthy man presented with a history of prolonged chest pain radiating to the jaw and the left arm. Five days prior to the onset of chest pain, he developed bloody diarrhea, fever and chills. Creatine ki

Gatrointestinal symptoms, which include diarrhea, are as common as respiratory symptoms in patients with HIV infection. Gastrointestinal symptoms may result from infections, neoplasma, HIV enteropathy or drug toxicity. Three HIV-infected patients admitted to our hospital complaining of diarrhea and fever. We confirmed their diagnosis as Campylobacter jejuni enteritis by bacteriological examination of their feces. All of them had eaten inadequately cooked meat in restaurants before the onset of their enteritis. Their symptoms immediately improved after the administration of antimicrobial agents

A 35 year old man with a fatal Campylobacter jejuni infection is described. He had HbE/beta zero thalassaemia and had undergone splenectomy nine months previously for hypersplenism; he also had chronic hepatitis C infection. He presented with high grade fever but no gastrointestinal symptoms and rapidly progressed to septicaemic shock and hepatic encephalopathy despite treatment with penicillin, gentamicin, and, later, chloramphenicol and ceftazidime. Only one case of Campylobacter jejuni septicaemia occurring post-splenectomy has been reported previously, also in an iron overloaded thalassaem

A case-control study was carried out to investigate possible reasons for the large increase in the number of cases of infection caused by Campylobacter species reported in the Regional Epidemiology Section of Manchester Public Health Laboratory in late spring each year. The hypothesis tested was that a risk factor peculiar to campylobacter infection is responsible for this phenomenon. Interviews about a wide variety of risk factors were conducted with 29 patients suffering from campylobacter enteritis and 41 out of a control group of 42 with acute diarrhoeal illness from other causes. The only

The presence of helicobacter pylori in the stomach in patients with clinical signs of gastroduodenal disease and its possible relationship with several clinical, endoscopic and anatomopathologic characteristics of the illness were prospectively evaluated in 359 patients. H. pylori was isolated from 388 samples in 216 patients (60% of colonization). In patients with endoscopic and, or, anatomopathologic evidence of gastroduodenal alterations the microorganism was isolated in 67% of the instances whereas it was observed in only 7% of the patients free of such alterations (p less than 0.001). The

The method of C. pylori diagnosis proposed by the authors proved more informative that histological detection of the infection. The technique employs evaluation of urease activity in gastric contents. Upon comparison of the two diagnostic modalities in 30 patients with chronic gastroduodenitis and peptic ulcer there was no definite correlation in their results. It was noted that C. pylori invasion produced negligible characteristic symptoms in gastroduodenal affections.

We report a case of aneurysm of the abdominal aorta with spontaneous rupture in a 64-year-old man with emphysema and chronic alcoholism. Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus was repeatedly recovered from the blood and from specimens of the excised aneurysm. The patient died in spite of early diagnosis, intravenous erythromycin and surgical intervention. The bacteriology and epidemiology of campylobacteriosis in man is briefly discussed and eight other published cases of aneurysm, infected with the same organism, are tabulated. C. fetus ssp. fetus should be added to the list of bacteria having

A three-month survey was undertaken to determine the incidence of Campylobacter jejuni and Yersinia enterocolitica in diarrhoeal disease and acute abdominal disease in Palmerston North. C. jejuni was isolated from five domiciliary patients and one hospitalised patient with acute diarrhoea but there were no isolations from patients suffering from acute abdominal disease. The isolation rates for C. jejuni in domiciliary and hospitalised patients with acute diarrhoea were 7.8 percent and 1.7 percent respectively. Y. enterocolitica was not isolated.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis in polio-free regions. Considerable evidence links Campylobacter infection with GBS, but evidence that implicates other pathogens as triggers remains scarce. We conducted a time-series analysis to investigate short-term correlations between weekly laboratory-confirmed reports of putative triggering pathogens and weekly hospitalizations for GBS in England from 1993 through 2002. We found a positive association between the numbers of reports of laboratory-confirmed influenza A in any given week and GBS hospitalizat

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and two primers aiming at the enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) and arbitrary DNA sequences, respectively, were used to fingerprint the genomic DNA of 24 Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated from five patients with recurrent C. jejuni infections. Results were compared with biotyping and serotyping. The latter two methods, when combined, distinguished 9 different types, whereas PCR-mediated DNA analysis discriminated 14 different patterns. For six strains, the results of PCR-mediated typing led to different interpretations. This method i

This report reviews the available information on the clinical features, pathogenesis, bacteriology, and epidemiology of Campylobacter jejuni and Yersinia enterocolitica, both of which have recently been recognized as important causes of enteric infection. In the fields of salmonellosis and shigellosis, important new epidemiological and related findings that have implications for the control of these infections are described. Priority research activities in each of these areas are outlined.

Campylobacter enteritis is a food-borne or waterborne illness caused almost exclusively by Campylobacter jejuni and, to a lesser extent, by Campylobacter coli. These organisms produce indistinguishable clinical diseases and together represent the second most common cause of bacterial diarrhea in the United States and the leading cause of enteric infection throughout the world. The conventional approach to the laboratory diagnosis of Campylobacter enteritis is based on the recovery of the organism from a stool specimen, which requires the use of a specialized medium incubated at 42°C for severa

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology, seasonal trends, and clinical characteristics of Campylobacter and Salmonella infections in children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in Northeastern Poland from 2020 to 2023. The research sought to address the scarcity of localized data on these bacterial pathogens and identify key clinical and demographic markers to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. A retrospective analysis was conducted on medical records of children aged 0-17 years hospitalized at the Bialystok Children's Clinical Hospital. Stool sample

BACKGROUND: Myocarditis is a rare but serious complication of bacterial gastroenteritis, occurring when intestinal infections extend to systemic inflammation involving the myocardium. Although viral etiologies are most prominent in the literature, increasing evidence implicates that certain bacterial pathogens, usually regarded as confined to the gastrointestinal tract, provoke cardiac inflammation through mechanisms that are poorly understood.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of recurrent myocarditis in a 34-year-old previously healthy male, with each episode temporally associated with a

Human infection with antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter species is an important public health concern due to the potentially increased severity of illness and risk of death. Our objective was to synthesise the knowledge of factors associated with human infections with antimicrobial-resistant strains of Campylobacter. This scoping review followed systematic methods, including a protocol developed a priori. Comprehensive literature searches were developed in consultation with a research librarian and performed in five primary and three grey literature databases. Criteria for inclusion were an

INTRODUCTION: Reactive arthritis (REA) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) are postinfectious complications of Campylobacter enteritis (CE); associations with inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are also discussed. The objective of this study was to summarize existing evidence on the probability of sequelae following confirmed CE.
METHODS: All studies included in previous reviews and meta-analyses on this topic were retrieved and assessed for eligibility; a systematic literature search was conducted to collect more recent reports. For each sequela, random effects meta
