We report the first case of non-dermatophytic onychomycosis of the toenail described in Kazakhstan caused by Candida parapsilosis. The biological properties of the strain were studied. C. parapsilosis forms white creamy colonies, smooth with focal wrinkles, and the reversum is light-yellow. The culture of C. parapsilosis is represented by a yeast form, characterized by the presence of round or cylindrical yeast cells with active budding. The strain has a high saccharolytic and urease activity and is indifferent to the sucrose and maltose. The C. parapsilosis strain was sensitive to polyene and

Caenorhabditiselegans is a valuable tool as an infection model toward the study of Candida species. In this work, we endeavored to develop a C. elegans-Candidaparapsilosis infection model by using the fungi as a food source. Three species of the C. parapsilosis complex (C.parapsilosis (sensustricto), Candidaorthopsilosis and Candidametapsilosis) caused infection resulting in C. elegans killing. All three strains that comprised the complex significantly diminished the nematode lifespan, indicating the virulence of the pathogens against the host. The infection process included invasion of the in

Candida parapsilosis is a rare cause of endocarditis, which is seen to affect the native valves in patients who are known intravenous drug abusers or following contamination during surgery for prosthetic valves. We discuss a unique constellation of autopsy findings in a 35-year-old chronic opium abuser who presented with left-sided weakness followed by low-grade fever. He was diagnosed to have C. parapsilosis native valve endocarditis with septic emboli involving the myocardial vessels, left middle cerebral artery, spleen, and common iliac artery. In addition, autopsy highlighted a right basal

Septic bursitis is usually caused by bacterial organisms. However, infectious bursitis caused by fungi is very rare. Herein, we present a 68-year-old woman with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis who developed pain, erythema, and swelling of the right olecranon bursa. Aspiration of the olecranon bursa showed a white blood cell count of 3.1 × 10(3)/μL (41% neutrophils, 30% lymphocytes, and 29% monocytes). Fluid culture was positive for Candida parapsilosis. She was treated with caspofungin 50 mg intravenously daily for 13 days followed by fluconazole 200 mg orally daily for one week. She respon

Breakthrough fungal infections in patients on antimicrobial prophylaxis during allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) represent a major and often unexplained cause of morbidity and mortality. Candida parapsilosis is a common cause of invasive candidiasis and has been classified as a high-priority fungal pathogen by the World Health Organization. In high-risk allo-HCT recipients on micafungin prophylaxis, we show that heteroresistance (the presence of a phenotypically unstable, low-frequency subpopulation of resistant cells (~1 in 10,000)) underlies breakthrough bloodstream in

An 82-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with refractory nailbed ulceration accompanied by pain in her left fourth toe. Six months prior, she had undergone nail removal surgery to address a persistent paronychia that had not resolved for four months. Crust, necrotic tissue, and secretion on the nailbed were taken for microbiological examination, and Candida parapsilosis was discovered in culture. The authors first report one refractory nailbed ulceration caused by Candida parapsilosis after nail extraction.

Candida parapsilosis is an opportunistic fungal pathogen with increasing incidence in hospital settings worldwide; however, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms promoting its virulence and drug resistance. Bergin et al. systematically quantify the frequency and effect of copy number variation (CNV) across 170 diverse clinical and environmental isolates of C. parapsilosis (Bergin SA, Zhao F, Ryan AP, Müller CA, Nieduszynski CA, Zhai B, Rolling T, Hohl TM, Morio F, Scully J, Wolfe KH, Butler G, 2022, mBio, https://doi.org/10.1128/mbio.01777-22). Renal transplant recipients are at risk for opportunistic infections due to their immunosuppressed state. We describe the case of a 59-year-old renal transplant recipient who presented with sepsis and bilateral pulmonary emboli due to Candida parapsilosis She was treated with intravenous caspofungin and had a transoesophageal echocardiogram, which revealed vegetations on her pacemaker leads. She then underwent surgery to replace her pacemaker; however, her blood cultures remained positive for C. parapsilosis postoperatively. Her antifungal was switched to liposomal amphotericin B and flucytosi

BACKGROUND: Aorto-enteric fistula is a rare and potentially lethal entity. Its presentation may be as an enteric-paraprosthetic fistula, due to injury in the gut caused by direct contact with the vascular prosthesis.
OBJECTIVE: We report a case of enteric-paraprosthetic fistulae with the unusual finding of Candida parapsilosis as the only isolated pathogen.
CLINICAL CASE: A 65-year-old male, smoker, with aortobifemoral revascularisation with dacron due to aortoiliac occlusive disease, and re-intervention for thrombosis of left arm at 6 months. Hospitalisation at 22 months was required due to

This case report describes the clinical and histopathologic features, including molecular confirmation, of fungal keratitis after intrastromal corneal ring segments placement for keratoconus. A 52-year-old woman underwent insertion of Intacs(®) corneal implants for treatment of keratoconus. Extrusion of the implants was noted 5 months post insertion and replaced. Three months later, monocular infiltrates and an epithelial defect were observed. The Intacs were removed and the infiltrates were treated with ofloxacin and prednisolone acetate. Microbial cultures and stains were negative. The patie

BACKGROUND: Data on the trends of the incidence of candidemia caused by C. albicans and C. parapsilosis in recent years are very limited. At the same time, factors that predispose to candidemia, caused by both species and the epidemiology of hospital transmission, are not well known. Our study analyzed 14 years of candidemia in a single institution in order to compare the incidence, clinical outcomes, and transmission patterns of both species.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study (2010-2023) in a 1236-bed tertiary hospital. We included all episodes of candidemia due to C. albicans and

Total knee arthroplasty is an increasingly common surgical intervention for degenerative knee disease, yet it carries a risk of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). While bacterial infections dominate the landscape of PJIs, fungal infections represent a rare but significant concern, especially in immunocompromised patients. This case report describes a 71-year-old patient who presented in October 2024 with left knee pain and swelling 7 months after total knee arthroplasty. A prosthetic joint infection due to Candida parapsilosis was diagnosed preoperatively by repetitive microbiological examinati

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Candida parapsilosis isolates usually have a low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against azoles. Although Candida parapsilosis isolates usually have low MICs against azoles, recent studies candida invasive infections due to azole resistant-C. parapsilosis isolates . Regarding this, the main aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility pattern of Iranian clinical C. parapsilosis against available azole antifungal drugs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 105 previously-identified isolates of C. parapsilosis sensu stricto. For the purpose

A 73-year-old healthy woman noticed black pigmentation on both thumbnails for 6 years. Upon her visit to our clinic, she had pigmented onychomycosis with onycholysis in the distal area. There was no evidence of paronychia. Direct microscopy using Zoomblue™ and histopathological examination showed aggregated blastoconidia. Fontana-Masson staining confirmed fungal melanin production. A combination of morphological features and genetic testing identified the isolates as Candida parapsilosis. Fungal melanonychia due to C. parapsilosis is rare, with only six cases reported since 1979. The minimum i

AIM: To investigate the antifungal activity of MOL3, a small molecule that was selected by virtual screening, against Candida spp.
MATERIALS & METHODS: The antifungal activity of MOL3 was evaluated using standard strains and clinical isolates. Activity was evaluated in both in vitro tests and animal models.
RESULTS: The minimum fungicidal concentration of MOL3 against Candida spp. ranged from 16 to 128 mg/l. MOL3 at the sub-minimum fungicidal concentration inhibited hyphal elongation. The remaining yeast cells presented morphological changes and were metabolically inactive. MOL3 was toxicolo
