Naringenin (NRG) inhibits the fungal 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase accountable for ergosterol synthesis in Candida albicans (C. albicans), a causative agent for cutaneous candidiasis. In present research, NRG was complexed with ZnO nanomaterial (NRG-Zn2+) to synthesize NRG-Zn2+ nanocomposites. The particle size and ζ-potential of NRG-Zn2+ nanocomposites were respectively estimated to be 180.33 ± 1.22-nm and - 3.92 ± 0.35-mV. In silico data predicted the greater affinity of NRG-Zn2+ nanocomposite for 14α-demethylase and ceramide in comparison to NRG alone. Later, NRG-Zn2+ nanocomposites solu

The in vitro activity of KP-103, a novel triazole derivative, against pathogenic fungi that cause dermatomycoses and its therapeutic efficacy against plantar tinea pedis and cutaneous candidiasis in guinea pigs were investigated. MICs were determined by a broth microdilution method with morpholinepropanesulfonic acid-buffered RPMI 1640 medium for Candida species and with Sabouraud dextrose broth for dermatophytes and by an agar dilution method with medium C for Malassezia furfur. KP-103 was the most active of all the drugs tested against Candida albicans (geometric mean [GM] MIC, 0.002 microg/

A petrolatum and zinc oxide-based ointment containing 0.25% miconazole nitrate is reported to be effective and well tolerated in the treatment of diaper dermatitis complicated by cutaneous candidiasis (DDCC). This prospective, multicenter, open-label, long-term, phase IV study investigated the potential resistance of Candida spp. to repeated topical use of 0.25% miconazole nitrate in infants age 15 months and younger with moderate to severe DDCC. For initial and recurring episodes of DDCC over the 2-year study period, subjects were treated with a 7-day course of 0.25% miconazole nitrate ointme

This document summarizes current knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of candidiasis affecting the skin and oral mucosa. Several clinical forms of mucocutaneous candidiasis are distinguished depending on a patient's age and infected site, e.g. Candida intertrigo, erythema mycoticum infantile, erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica, candidal paronychia and onychia, Candida onychomycosis, and oral candidiasis. The diagnosis of candidiasis is confirmed by observation of mycelial forms on microscopic examination. Since Candida yeasts (especially C. albicans) are normal inhabitants of the skin and

Fungic infections related to parenteral use of drugs increased significantly from 1980 on with the description of the disseminated candidiasis syndrome. Associated to the administration of brown heroin, this syndrome is characterized by the development of cutaneous, ocular and osteoarticular infections, isolated or combined, by Candidas albicans. We present 15 patients with disseminated candidiasis: 12 developed ocular affection (10 endophthalmitis and 2 chorioretinitis): 9, cutaneous lesions and 3 osteoarticular affection (3 costochondritis and one hip arthritis); 8 presented simultaneous inf

Candida species, commensal residents of human skin, are recognized as the cause of cutaneous candidiasis across various body surfaces. Individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those with immunosuppressive conditions, are significantly more susceptible to this infection. Diabetes mellitus, a major metabolic disorder, has emerged as a critical factor inducing immunosuppression, thereby facilitating Candida colonization and subsequent skin infections. This comprehensive review examines the prevalence of different types of Candida albicans-induced cutaneous candidiasis in diabetic pa

Superficial Candida infection includes several common conditions, most often related to some underlying local or systemic predisposition. Appropriate identification of the pathogen is important in the management of candidiasis as the result of differences in susceptibility among species and strains of Candida to different antifungal drugs. Treatment options are reviewed for oropharyngeal candidiasis, vaginal candidiasis, cutaneous candidiasis, paronychia and onychomycosis, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Because of the importance of predisposing conditions for candidiasis, adjunctive me

Numerous case reports have been published of patients with cutaneous congenital candidiasis and neonatal candidiasis; however, this is the first reported case of congenital candidiasis confined to the nail plates. A subplacental candidal abscess, funisitis, and demonstration of hyphal invasion of fetal nail plates supported the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Candidiasis represents the most prevalent human fungal infection, originating from either endogenous colonization or exogenous acquisition, and encompasses a wide clinical spectrum ranging from localized mucocutaneous disease to disseminated, life-threatening infection. Extensive cutaneous candidiasis constitutes a relatively underrecognized and underreported manifestation, often overlooked in clinical practice. Broadly, Candida infections are classified into invasive disease (deep-seated involvement with or without candidemia) and mucocutaneous forms. Progression of extensive cuta

Superficial cutaneous and mucosal Candida infections are common and widely affect both the immunocompromised as well as the immunocompetent populations. Common infections may include Candida paronychia, cutaneous candidiasis, oral candidiasis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and Candida onychomycosis. Although C albicans has been considered to be the most common pathogen, other Candida species have emerged as potential causes of certain infections. Currently, a variety of antifungal agents is available to treat these infections. They include fluconazole, ketoconazole, and itraconazole. These agents

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is unique among the cutaneous fungal infections caused by defects of the cell-mediated immune system. A complex interplay exists in the host between fungal virulence factors favoring disease, and immune and non-immune host mechanisms defending against disease. Cell-mediated immunity appears of paramount importance in defense against histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, mucocutaneous candidiasis, and dermatophytosis. Mucocutaneous candidiasis is especially common in patients with HIV infection. Anti-fungal medicines were effective against candidiasis. How

We present the case of a preterm neonate who was born with respiratory distress and a papulovesicular rash that was diagnosed as congenital candidiasis (CC). The mother was asymptomatic. The cutaneous eruption and respiratory distress improved following treatment with systemic antifungals. Congenital candidiasis ranges in presentation from isolated cutaneous involvement to severe multisystem disease. Given its rarity among neonatal skin eruptions, heightened suspicion is required for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

With improved and prolonged survival of very and extremely low birth weight infants, invasive fungal infection has emerged as an important concern in the neonatal intensive care units. Candidiasis is the third leading cause of late onset sepsis in these neonates and is associated with 20-30% mortality. Extreme prematurity, central venous catheters, prolonged antibiotic exposure, parenteral nutrition are important risk factors. Various forms of cutaneous manifestations of candidiasis have been described ranging from local diaper dermatitis and oral thrush to widespread erosive and ulcerative le

BACKGROUND: Biologics directed against the T-helper (Th)-17 pathway have been approved for several inflammatory diseases. Interleukin (IL)-17 is involved in anti- Candida host defense, and clinical trials suggested increased candidiasis incidence during IL-17 inhibitor therapy. We describe the worldwide epidemiology of candidiasis during Th17 inhibitor therapy, and immunological mechanisms involved in candidiasis susceptibility.
METHODS: A comprehensive analysis of multiple independent sources reporting Candida adverse events during biologics inhibiting the Th17 pathway was performed. Associa

Dermatomycoses are common diseases in dermatological clinics. An epidemiological survey in Japan revealed that dermatophytosis was the most prevalent cutaneous fungal infection (89.1%), followed by candidiasis (8.4%) and the Malassezia infections(2.4%). Among dermatophytoses, tinea pedis was the most frequent, then in decreasing order, tinea unguium, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea manuum, and tinea capitis including kerion. Among all dermatophyte infections, Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated. Among cutaneous candidiasis, intertrigo was the most frequent clinical form, f

Three new cases of placental candidiasis are reported. Two were associated with fetal cutaneous candidiasis and one with fetal systemic candidiasis. The systemic case was associated with an intrauterine contraceptive device. Infection of the placenta results in small 'granulomata' under the surface of the cord and a diffuse chorioamnionitis of the membranes and chorionic plate. In reviewing the 24 previously reported cases it can be seen that systemic. Candida infection of the fetus results in prematurity and death, infection can occur across intact membranes, and systemic candidiasis in the f

Congenital candidal infection usually presents as skin rash but it can also affect skin appendages. Nail involvement in congenital candidiasis is rare and has been usually associated with cutaneous lesions. We report 6 cases of congenital candidiasis limited to nail plates that had favorable outcome.
