Candy-Plug Generation II for False Lumen Occlusion in Chronic Aortic Dissection: Feasibility and Early Results.

Purpose: To present the early results of false lumen (FL) occlusion in chronic aortic dissection using the Candy-Plug generation II (CP II), which has a self-closing fabric channel that obviates the need for separate occlusion of its center. Materials and Methods: Fourteen consecutive patients (mean age 60±11 years; 10 men) with persistent FL backflow and aneurysm formation at the thoracic segment in chronic aortic dissection underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) with FL occlusion using the refined CP II. Primary endpoints were technical success (successful deployment) and clin

A successful management of Candy Cane syndrome post Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Candy Cane syndrome (CCS) is a rare condition in which the proximal gastrojejunal attachment's afferent blind limb is elongated. This can lead to different symptoms, including nausea and vomiting, with less commonly described reflux and regurgitation symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old female presented with a chronic complaint of postprandial pain, discomfort, and reflux lasting for about 2 years after a previous Roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. Upper endoscopy was done and raised suspicion for CCS. The patient underwent an exploratory laparoscopy,

Pediatric high-flow, cervical spinal, macro-arteriovenous fistula, treated with the endovascular cotton candy glue injection technique.

A 3-year-old boy presented to our hospital with progressive neurological deficits. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a perimedullary macro-arteriovenous fistula (PMAVF) resulting in a large venous pouch within the parenchyma of the lower cervical spinal cord. Transarterial varix embolization of the fistula from the venous side was performed using N-butyl cyanoacrylate with tantalum powder. Postembolization angiography confirmed obliteration of the fistula, and MRI revealed thrombosis and reduction in size of the venous component. The patient's clinical symptoms were reduced dram

Blunt abdominal injury resulting in a belly full of candy after a motocross accident, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Blunt traumatic gastric perforations in children are rare. Delayed diagnosis will lead to abdominal contamination and may result in morbidity and even mortality. We present a case of an adolescent who sustained blunt abdominal injury in a motocross accident and presented with remarkable hyperdense spherical shaped structures on the computed tomography (CT). CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old boy arrived at the emergency room with an acute abdomen after a motocross accident. A CT scan of the abdomen demonstrated free air and hyperdense round structures in the stomach, pelvic cavity a

Black candy-plug technique for a large false lumen in a patient with complicated type B aortic dissection.

Persistent false lumen (FL) perfusion after thoracic endovascular aortic repair for type B aortic dissection remains challenging, especially in large FLs. We present successful FL thrombosis using a modified version of the candy-plug-the "black candy-plug" technique. With no re-entry available, the FL was accessed by intravascular ultrasound-guided flap penetration. A modified Excluder aortic extender was deployed in the FL, reinforced with coil-in-plug, and the residual gap was sealed with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, achieving complete FL occlusion. Follow-up computed tomography confirmed stable

Management of anticancer treatment in patients under chronic dialysis: results of the multicentric CANDY (CANcer and DialYsis) study.

BACKGROUND: One million people worldwide benefit from chronic dialysis, with an increased rate in Western countries of 5% yearly. Owing to increased incidence of cancer in dialyzed patients, the management of these patients is challenging for oncologists/nephrologists. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The CANcer and DialYsis (CANDY) retrospective multicenter study included patients under chronic dialysis who subsequently had a cancer (T0). Patients were followed up for 2 years after T0. Prescriptions of anticancer drugs were studied with regard to their renal dosage adjustment/dialysability. RESULTS: A

Oral Glucose Tolerance Testing Using Candy: A Sweet Solution to Improve Screening in Children with Cystic Fibrosis?

INTRODUCTION: Oral glucose tolerance testing is recommended for all children with CF older than 9 years, yet compliance remains poor across centers. METHODS: We performed a small pilot study assessing the glycemic curves and participant satisfaction in seven children and adolescents. RESULTS: We chose a dextrose-based candy (Nerds®) free of any fat, fiber, gelatin, or corn syrup and performed the candy OGTT 1-4 days following the standard oral dextrose solution OGTT. Glucose values at 120 min were similar between the candy and oral dextrose solution (p = 0.8986). CONCLUSIONS: Our small pilo

Candy box technique for the fixation of inferior pole patellar fractures: finite element analysis and biomechanical experiments.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining effective reduction and firm fixation in inferior pole patellar fractures is a highly challenging task. There are various treatment methods available; although tension-band wiring combined with cerclage wiring (TBWC) is the mainstream approach, its effectiveness is limited. Herein, we propose and evaluate a new technique called candy box (CB), based on separate vertical wiring (SVW), for the treatment of inferior pole patellar fractures. Specifically, we provide biomechanical evidence for its clinical application. METHODS: Five fixation models were built: SVW combined

Initial experience with a modified "candy-plug" technique for false lumen embolization in chronic type B aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Persistent distal false lumen (FL) perfusion after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for type B aortic dissection (TBAD) can lead to aneurysmal degeneration and an increased risk of rupture. We have presented our initial experience using a modified "candy-plug" (CP) technique for FL embolization. METHODS: From February 2021 to July 2022, we treated six patients using the modified CP technique. All the patients had undergone prior or simultaneous TEVAR for chronic TBAD with persistent FL perfusion and aneurysm expansion. Bilateral common femoral artery access was obtained

Double-balloon (CANDIS) Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration Improves Hepatic Functional Reserve Compared with the Conventional Method.

PURPOSE: Conventional balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration often fails to achieve complete occlusion in cases with complex collateral drainage, leading to variable outcomes. The cooperative anti-reflux and double interruption system, a coaxial dual-balloon device, was developed to achieve more stable venous occlusion. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and hepatic functional benefits of double-balloon balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration compared with the conventional single-balloon method for gastric varices. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This single-center ret

Physicochemical and Sensory Properties and Antioxidant Activity of Xylitol Candies Containing Yuja (Citrus junos) Peels or Pulp.

Xylitol candies offer numerous health benefits such as preventing cavities and obesity. However, a preference for them tends to be low due to their distinctive flavor. In this study, we developed xylitol candies containing mature yuja peel (MYP-C), immature yuja peel (IYP-C), and yuja pulp (YP-C). To determine the optimal yuja added to xylitol candy, we compared and analyzed its physicochemical properties, sensory characteristics, and antioxidant activities. IYP-C and MYP-C significantly increased the naringin and hesperidin contents compared to the control and the YP-C. In particular, the IYP

Design, evolution, and experience with the candy plug device for endovascular false lumen occlusion of chronic aortic dissections.

INTRODUCTION: The management of the false lumen (FL) when dealing with aortic dissection is a crucial aspect since inducing its thrombosis is necessary in order to achieve aortic remodeling. One of the pitfalls of endovascular treatment of aortic dissection (AD) is retrograde distal FL perfusion and pressurization, which prevents FL thrombosis and thus aortic remodeling, while being associated with aneurysmal degeneration of the FL and poor long-term outcomes. AREAS COVERED: Currently, there is no CE/FDA approved device for FL closure, however different techniques and devices have been propos

Magnet and wire remodeling for the treatment of candy cane syndrome: first case series of a new approach (with video).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Candy cane syndrome (CCS) is an adverse event (AE) from gastrectomy or gastric bypass and end-to-side anastomosis to a jejunal loop. Preferential passage of food to the blind loop induces early satiety, pain, and regurgitation. An endoscopic device that combines 2 magnets and a self-retractable wire was designed to perform progressive septotomy with marsupialization. We evaluated the clinical safety and efficacy of this treatment in CCS. METHODS: Consecutive patients presenting with symptoms associated with CCS after gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass were treated wi
