New species of Ontocetus (Pinnipedia: Odobenidae) from the Lower Pleistocene of the North Atlantic shows similar feeding adaptation independent to the extant walrus (Odobenus rosmarus).

Ontocetus is one of the most notable extinct odobenines owing to its global distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. Originating in the Late Miocene of the western North Pacific, this lineage quickly spread to the Atlantic Ocean during the Pliocene, with notable occurrences in England, Belgium, The Netherlands, Morocco and the eastern seaboard of the United States. Reassessment of a pair of mandibles from the Lower Pleistocene of Norwich (United Kingdom) and a mandible from the Upper Pliocene of Antwerp (Belgium) that were referred to as Ontocetus emmonsi reveals existences of features of both

CAUSES AND TRENDS OF HARBOR SEAL (PHOCA VITULINA) MORTALITY ALONG THE BRITISH COLUMBIA COAST, CANADA, 2012-2020.

A retrospective study was conducted to categorize and describe the causes of mortality in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) along the British Columbia coast that presented to the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre (MMR) for rehabilitation from 2012 to 2020. Medical records for 1,279 predominantly perinatal live-stranded harbor seals recovered in this region were reviewed. Approximately 20.0% (256 individuals; 137 males, 118 females, 1 unknown) of these animals died while at MMR. Infectious disease was the most common cause of death, accounting for 60.5% of mortality across all age clas

Physiological responses to hypoxia are constrained by environmental temperature in heterothermic tenrecs.

Malagasy tenrecs are placental hibernating mammals that seal the entrances to their burrows and hibernate either singly or in groups for 8-9 months, which is likely to create a hypoxic and hypercapnic burrow environment. Therefore, we hypothesized that tenrecs are tolerant to environmental hypoxia and hypercapnia. Many hypoxia- and hypercapnia-tolerant fossorial mammals respond to hypoxia by decreasing metabolic rate and thermogenesis, and have blunted ventilatory responses to both environmental hypoxia and hypercapnia. However, tenrecs exhibit extreme metabolic and thermoregulatory plasticity

A systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of the global prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in wild marine mammals and associations with epidemiological variables.

Toxoplasma gondii infection in wild marine mammals is a growing problem and is associated with adverse impacts on marine animal and public health. This systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression estimates the global prevalence of T. gondii infection in wild marine mammals and analyses the association between T. gondii infection and epidemiological variables. PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data databases were searched until 30 May 2021. Eighty-four studies (n = 14,931 wild marine mammals from 15 families) were identified fr

Review of the systematics, biology and ecology of lice from pinnipeds and river otters (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Echinophthiriidae).

We present a literature review of the sucking louse family Echinophthiriidae, its five genera and twelve species parasitic on pinnipeds (fur seals, sea lions, walruses, true seals) and the North American river otter. We give detailed synonymies and published records for all taxonomic hierarchies, as well as hosts, type localities and repositories of type material; we highlight significant references and include comments on the current taxonomic status of the species. We provide a summary of present knowledge of the biology and ecology for eight species. Also, we give a host-louse list, and a b

Oxidative metabolic profiles of Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals: contribution to their species classification.

Since the 1990s, Brucella strains not matching the characteristics of any of the six conventional species have been isolated worldwide from marine mammals. In this study, 31 Brucella strains isolated from various marine mammals were examined for their oxidative metabolic pattern on 12 amino-acid and carbohydrate substrates. Three main oxidative profiles different from those of the Brucella terrestrial mammal strains were identified for the marine mammal strains: one gathering strains isolated from pinnipeds and two gathering strains from cetaceans. Thus, both oxidative metabolism results and p

Further assessment of the binding properties of proteins A, G, and chimeric protein AG to immunoglobulins of multiple host species of marine mammals.

Detection of infectious diseases in marine mammals is crucial to reduce the risk of transmission of zoonotic pathogens to humans. Although serodiagnostic tests such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) can detect antibodies against such pathogens, commercial secondary antibodies specific to marine mammal species are limited. Proteins A and AG have been previously found to react strongly to the immunoglobulins of pinnipeds and cetaceans. However, the binding properties of immunoglobulins of other marine mammals remain unclear to these proteins. Using ELISA, this study further assessed t

Geographically dispersed zoonotic tuberculosis in pre-contact South American human populations.

Previous ancient DNA research has shown that Mycobacterium pinnipedii, which today causes tuberculosis (TB) primarily in pinnipeds, infected human populations living in the coastal areas of Peru prior to European colonization. Skeletal evidence indicates the presence of TB in several pre-colonial South and North American populations with minimal access to marine resources- a scenario incompatible with TB transmission directly from infected pinnipeds or their tissues. In this study, we investigate the causative agent of TB in ten pre-colonial, non-coastal individuals from South America. We reco

The genome sequence of Brucella pinnipedialis B2/94 sheds light on the evolutionary history of the genus Brucella.

BACKGROUND: Since the discovery of the Malta fever agent, Brucella melitensis, in the 19th century, six terrestrial mammal-associated Brucella species were recognized over the next century. More recently the number of novel Brucella species has increased and among them, isolation of species B. pinnipedialis and B. ceti from marine mammals raised many questions about their origin as well as on the evolutionary history of the whole genus. RESULTS: We report here on the first complete genome sequence of a Brucella strain isolated from marine mammals, Brucella pinnipedialis strain B2/94. A whole

Aspects of reproduction in female Ross seals (Ommatophoca rossii).

Ovaries were collected from 26 Ross seals shot in the King Haakon VII Sea south of the 60 degrees latitude during 3 periods, between 12 January and 2 February 1980-1982. The structure of the ovaries resembled that of other pinnipeds. A corpus luteum was found in 18 of 26 females, which therefore were regarded as reproductive. However, no females were lactating or visibly pregnant (presence of fetus in the uterus). Of the remaining 8 females (non-reproductive), 3 had neither a corpus luteum nor a corpus albicans. Ovulation did not alternate between ovaries in 4 of 10 females. Ovarian weight was

Activities of dichlorvos or disophenol against the hookworm (Uncinaria lucasi) and sucking lice of northern fur seal pups (Callorhinus ursinus) on St. Paul Island, Alaska.

One controlled and six critical tests were conducted in July, 1977 with northern fur seal pups (Callorhinus ursinus) to determine the efficacies of a single dose of dichlorvos capsules at 29.3 to 32.8 mg/kg, tablets at 10.5 to 11.5 mg/kg, or disophenol at 9.9 mg/kg given subcutaneously against natural infections of adult Uncinaria lucasi. In the controlled test, 20 pups were treated and 10 pups were nontreated. Removal of hookworms in this test was 99% for five pups receiving dichlorvos capsules, 99% for five pups receiving dichlorvos tablets, and 77% for 10 pups receiving disophenol. Also, bo

Broadening the semiaquatic scene: Quantification of long bone microanatomy across pinnipeds.

Investigations of bone microanatomy are commonly used to explore lifestyle strategies in vertebrates. While distinct microanatomical limb bone features have been established for exclusively aquatic and terrestrial lifestyles, identifying clear patterns for the semiaquatic lifestyle remains more challenging. Pinnipeds and mustelids provide an ideal framework for studying the diversity of semiaquatic adaptations. Here, we tested whether their humerus and femur showed significant differences in microanatomical and biomechanical parameters along the diaphysis relative to locomotor strategies. We μ

Conservation energetics of beluga whales: using resting and swimming metabolism to understand threats to an endangered population.

The balance between energetic costs and acquisition in free-ranging species is essential for survival, and provides important insights regarding the physiological impact of anthropogenic disturbances on wild animals. For marine mammals such as beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), the first step in modeling this bioenergetic balance requires an examination of resting and active metabolic demands. Here, we used open-flow respirometry to measure oxygen consumption during surface rest and submerged swimming by trained beluga whales, and compared these measurements with those of a commonly studie

THE USE OF EPHEDRINE TO TREAT ANESTHESIA-ASSOCIATED HYPOTENSION IN PINNIPEDS.

Hypotension is a common adverse effect of general anesthesia that has historically been difficult to measure in pinniped species due to technical challenges. A retrospective case review found seven pinniped cases that demonstrated anesthesia-associated hypotension diagnosed by direct blood pressure measurements during general anesthesia at The Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito, CA) between 2017 and 2019. Cases included five California sea lions (CSL: Zalophus californianus), one Hawaiian monk seal (HMS: Neomonachus schauinslandi), and one northern elephant seal (NES: Mirounga angustirostris). Pa

The seal finger: an unusual case of monoarticular sepsis.

We describe a case of monoarthritis in an Inuit seal hunter which progressed to joint destruction of the distal interphalangeal joint despite early and aggressive sequential antibiotic therapy with ampicillin, cloxacillin and penicillin G. In retrospect, had the entity of seal finger been diagnosed at the onset, appropriate antibiotic therapy with tetracycline may have prevented permanent joint damage.
