First record of feline urinary bladder worm (Capillaria syn. Pearsonema) in Sri Lanka: Clinical, histopathological and molecular characterization.

Nematode infections in the urinary tract of domestic cats and dogs are rare, although common in wild predatory animals. Here we report a case of a urinary bladder capillariosis in a cat from Sri Lanka. A three-year-old domestic male cat from the Kalutara District was brought to a private veterinary hospital due to frequent urination, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The physical examinations reported severe emaciation, gasping and abdominal breathing and retarded growth. Successive to urinary sedimentation, Capillaria-type eggs were detected. Blood Urea Nitrogen level of 28.02 Mmol/L and serum

Capillaria (Procapillaria) nubthaiensis sp. nov. (Nematoda: Capillariidae): a newly discovered capillariid in Scomberomorus commerson from the Gulf of Thailand.

Capillaria Moravec, 1987, is a genus of thin, threadlike roundworms infecting various hosts, including fishes. Fifteen species have been described from freshwater, brackish-water and marine fishes, primarily based on morphological characters. However, species identification remains challenging, and no molecular information is currently available for previously described Capillaria species. Utilizing morphological, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular evidence, we describe Capillaria (Procapillaria) nubthaiensis Chan, 2025 as a new species of capillariid infecting the commercially import

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) infection in synanthropic small mammals (rodents and shrews) in Northeastern India: Zoonotic and One Health implications.

Rapid urbanization has increased overlap between human and synanthropic rodent habitats. This intensifies human-animal-environment interactions and facilitates the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases, highlighting the importance of the "One Health" concept. Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a neglected zoonotic parasite where rodents serve as the principal reservoirs. Human infections are often asymptomatic, but they can also cause liver failure and death in severe cases, with definitive diagnosis requiring liver biopsy. This study was conducted in Meghalaya, Northea

Capillaria plectropomi n. sp. (Nematoda: Capillariidae), a new intestinal parasite of the leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae) off New Caledonia.

A new nematode species, Capillaria plectropomi n. sp. (Capillariidae), is described from the intestine of the leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus (Lacepède) from coral reefs off New Caledonia. The new species, belonging to the subgenus Neocapillaria Moravec, 1987, differs from other congeneric species of this subgenus from marine fishes mainly in the length (168-186 μm), shape and structure of the spicule. It is characterized, in the male, by the presence of two well-developed dorsolateral caudal lobes, a pair of lateral papillae, a heavily sclerotized spicule with many rough transver

Capillaria boehmi (syn. Eucoleus boehmi): Challenging treatment of a rarely diagnosed nasal nematode in dogs and high prevalence in Swiss foxes.

Despite morphological differences of eggs and adults, Capillaria boehmi infections have been occasionally misdiagnosed as C. aerophila infections in the past. Capillaria boehmi is found in the nasal and paranasal sinuses of wild canids and dogs, which may suffer from nasal discharge, sneezing, epistaxis and, importantly, their scent can be impaired. In this study we present three challenging cases of nasal capillariosis in dogs, report and review the variable success of anthelmintic treatments and investigate C. boehmi prevalence in Swiss red foxes, considered as potential wild life reservoir.

Comparison of wet mount, Mini-FLOTAC and Midi Parasep® coprological techniques for the detection of Crenosoma striatum, Capillaria spp. and Brachylaemus erinacei in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Parasitism, particularly Crenosoma striatum infection, can cause significant morbidity and mortality in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus). Wet mount is a coprological technique, which despite its relatively low sensitivity, is widely used in practice to detect the presence of endoparasites. The aims of this study were to compare the sensitivities of three coprological techniques and to determine a sensitive, yet practical method that could improve the detection of C. striatum infections in rehabilitating hedgehogs. Faecal samples were collected during autumn from 56 hedgehogs, and each

Extraintestinal nematodes of the red fox Vulpes vulpes in north-west Italy.

Extraintestinal nematodes of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) are a wide group of parasites that infect wild and domestic carnivores and occasionally humans. Nematodes in the cardiopulmonary system, stomach, urinary apparatus and muscle tissue of 165 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from north-west Italy (Liguria and Piedmont) were investigated between 2009 and 2012. Of the cardiopulmonary nematodes, a high prevalence of Angiostrongylus vasorum and Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) was found, 78.2% and 41.8% respectively; Crenosoma vulpis (15.8%) and Filaroides spp. (4.8%) were also found. S

Description of a new Capillariinae (Nematoda: Trichuridae) from Scapteromys aquaticus (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A new species of Capillaria is described on the basis of specimens recovered from the intestine of the swamp rat Scapteromys aquaticus (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) from Argentina. Capillaria alainchabaudi n. sp. and a peculiar species from Australian marsupials are the only 2 species of Capillaria sensu stricto parasitic in mammals. A comparison with the Australian species and with the 18 species of this genus described from other vertebrates from the Western Hemisphere is given. The separation of the new species is based on morphologic and morphometrical features, such as intestine ending in c

Pulmonary capillariasis in a child in Iran.

A 9-year-old boy in Teheran, Iran developed severe asthmatic symptoms, productive cough, and moderate eosinophilia. Lung biopsy demonstrated a helminth in a granulomatous lesion with foreign-body type cellular reaction leading to a tentative diagnosis of visceral larva migrans. Diethylcarbamazine, thiabendazole, and steroids were given, rapidly relieving the symptoms. In a subsequent review of the biopsy the helminth was identified as a Capillaria, probably Capillaria (Thominx) aerophila, a nematode parasite of dogs, cats, and other carnivores, apparently the ninth such infection to be reporte

Helminth parasites in the endangered Ethiopian wolf, Canis simensis.

Ethiopian wolves, Canis simensis, are an endangered carnivore endemic to the Ethiopian highlands. Although previous studies have focused on aspects of Ethiopian wolf biology, including diet, territoriality, reproduction and infectious diseases such as rabies, little is known of their helminth parasites. In the current study, faecal samples were collected from 94 wild Ethiopian wolves in the Bale Mountains of southern Ethiopia, between August 2008 and February 2010, and were screened for the presence of helminth eggs using a semi-quantitative volumetric dilution method with microscopy.
