Capillary malformations.

Capillary malformation (CM), or port wine birthmark, is a cutaneous congenital vascular anomaly that occurs in 0.1%-2% of newborns. Patients with a CM localized on the forehead have an increased risk of developing a neurocutaneous disorder called encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis or Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), with complications including seizure, developmental delay, glaucoma, and vision loss. In 2013, a groundbreaking study revealed causative activating somatic mutations in the gene (GNAQ) encoding guanine nucleotide-binding protein Q subunit α (Gαq) in CM and SWS patient tissues. In this Re

Polyethylenimine-modified metal oxides for fabrication of packed capillary columns for capillary electrochromatography and capillary liquid chromatography.

The need for novel packing materials in both capillary electrochromatography (CEC) and capillary liquid chromatography (CLC) is apparent and the development towards more selective, application-oriented chromatographic phases is under progress world-wide. In this study we have synthesized new polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized Mn(2)O(3), SiO(2), SnO(2), and ZrO(2) particles for the fabrication of packed capillary columns for CEC and CLC. The nanocasting approach was successful for the preparation of functionalized metal oxide materials with a controlled porosity and morphology. PEI function

Capillary Malformations.

Capillary malformations (CMs) are the most common vascular anomalies, composed of enlarged capillaries and venules with thickened perivascular cell coverage in skin and mucous membranes. These congenital anomalies represent an error in vascular development during embryogenesis. Most of the CMs occur without any syndromic findings; the association between CMs systemic anomalies in some patients, however, makes the recognition of additional syndrome features critical. Some genetic disorders discussed, which feature CMs, include Sturge-Weber syndrome, diffuse CMs with overgrowth, Klippel-Trenauna

[Capillary telangiectasia].

Brain capillary telangiectasia is usually a small collection of dilated capillary-like vessels. In most cases it is a harmless incidental finding with no clinical significance. They are most commonly located in the pons. In terms of image morphology, they show brush-like signal extinction in T2*/SWI (susceptibility-weighted imaging) sequences and contrast enhancement in T1-weighted images. Other sequences are usually unremarkable unless they involve unusually large capillary telangiectasias. Angiographically they usually remain silent. Sometimes they are associated with venous abnormalities an

Multilamellated Basement Membranes in the Capillary Network of Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia.

A minimal diffusion barrier is key to the pulmonary gas exchange. In alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD), a rare genetically driven disease of early infancy, this crucial fibrovascular interface is compromised while the underlying pathophysiology is insufficiently understood. Recent in-depth analyses of vascular alterations in adult lung disease encouraged researchers to extend these studies to ACD and compare the changes of the microvasculature. Lung tissue samples of children with ACD (n = 12), adults with non-specific interstitial pneumonia (n = 12), and controls (n = 20) were studied using

Light-guiding capillaries: a robust optofluidic platform for nanoparticle tracking analysis.

Understanding nanoparticle interactions at the nanoscale is essential for numerous scientific fields and applications, with waveguide-based approaches offering a promising solution. In this work, we present a fiber-integrated platform for nanoparticle tracking analysis based on a fiber-type capillary structure (hereinafter referred to as "capillary") that achieves high performance comparable to more complex microstructured fibers. By combining measurements with optical simulations, we validate light propagation and loss behavior in water-filled capillaries, showing excellent agreement with the

Blood-brain barrier-restricted translocation of Toxoplasma gondii from cortical capillaries.

The cellular barriers of the central nervous system proficiently protect the brain parenchyma from infectious insults. Yet, the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii commonly causes latent cerebral infection in humans and other vertebrates. Here, we addressed the role of the cerebral vasculature in the passage of T. gondii to the brain parenchyma. Shortly after inoculation in mice, parasites mainly localized to cortical capillaries, in preference over post-capillary venules, cortical arterioles or meningeal and choroidal vessels. Early invasion to the parenchyma (days 1-5) occurred in absen

Neutrophil crawling in capillaries; a novel immune response to Staphylococcus aureus.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), particularly the USA300 strain, is a highly virulent pathogen responsible for an increasing number of skin and soft tissue infections globally. Furthermore, MRSA-induced soft tissue infections can rapidly progress into life-threatening conditions, such as sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis. The importance of neutrophils in these devastating soft tissue infections remains ambiguous, partly because of our incomplete understanding of their behaviour. Spinning disk confocal microscopy was used to visualize the behaviour of GR1-labelled neutrophils

Potential of polyE-323 coated capillaries for capillary electrophoresis of lipids.

In this note the feasibility of a polyamine-based capillary coating, polyE-323, for capillary electrophoresis (CE) of lipids is explored. PolyE-323 has previously been demonstrated to be suitable to suppress analyte-wall interaction of proteins in CE. However, the full applicability range of polyE-323 has not been exploited yet and it might be useful in the analysis of hydrophobic analytes, such as lipids. In this study, the stability of polyE-323 when using highly organic background electrolytes (BGEs), which are needed to solubilize the lipid analytes, was studied. For this, we used three di

Morphometric identification of luminal narrowing of myocardial capillaries after cardioplegic arrest.

BACKGROUND: Because there is no smooth muscle cell surrounding the capillary endothelial cells, the effect of coronary microcirculation at the capillary level following cardioplegic arrest and reperfusion would be much different from that of resistant arterioles. We therefore studied the effect of hypothermic blood cardioplegic arrest and subsequent reperfusion on the myocardial capillaries in cardiac operation patients. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients who underwent cardiac operations were included in this study. Three sequential biopsies (preischemia, ischemia, and reperfusion) were obtained

Endothelial fenestration of the alveolar capillaries in interstitial fibrotic lung diseases.

A light and electron microscopy study was performed on endothelial cells of alveolar capillaries in biopsied lung tissues obtained from 28 patients with interstitial fibrotic lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, collagen vascular diseases and acute interstitial pneumonia. In the relatively early stages of acute interstitial pneumonia, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and other diseases, the cytoplasms of the endothelial cells appeared swollen and electron-lucent and occasionally showed degeneration and ne

Stress failure of pulmonary capillaries: role in lung and heart disease.

Pulmonary capillaries have extremely thin walls to allow rapid exchange of respiratory gases across them. Recently it has been shown that the wall stresses become very large when the capillary pressure is raised, and in anaesthetised rabbits, ultrastructural damage to the walls is seen at pressures of 40 mm Hg and above. The changes include breaks in the capillary endothelial layer, alveolar epithelial layer, and sometimes all layers of the wall. The strength of the thin part of the capillary wall can be attributed to the type IV collagen in the extracellular matrix. Stress failure of pulmonar
