[A fatal septic shock due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus and review of literature].

INTRODUCTION: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a Gram-negative bacterium present in normal dogs and cats mouths. It can be responsible for septic shocks after dog or cat bite, especially in asplenic patients. CASE REPORT: We report here a case of C. canimorsus infection rapidly presenting as a multiple organ dysfonction syndrome in an immunocompetent 54 years old patient, who lives near a dog, without any sign of bite. The evolution was a rapidly fatal fulminant septic shock. CONCLUSION: Among patients with a septic shock of unknown etiology, fatal evolution due to C. canimorsus should be avoide

Lick of death: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is an important cause of sepsis in the elderly.

A 70-year-old Caucasian woman was treated for Capnocytophaga canimorsus septicaemia. The source of bacteraemia was very likely to be her household pet, an Italian greyhound. The patient presented with a presumed complex partial seizure but deteriorated rapidly with sepsis and multiorgan dysfunction. Neither scratch nor bite was established, although close petting including licks was reported. Blood cultures grew Gram-negative rods, identified by molecular techniques as C. canimorsus-a bacterium frequently isolated in the oral cavities of dogs and cats. A full recovery was made following 2 week

Capnocytophaga sp. isolated from a cat with chronic sinusitis and rhinitis.

A Capnocytophaga sp. was inadvertently isolated from a cat with chronic sinusitis and rhinitis when cytopathic effects were observed in Crandall-Reese feline kidney cells that had been inoculated with oropharyngeal swab samples. Although Capnocytophaga spp. are of considerable zoonotic importance, their clinical relevance for dogs or cats has not been established. However, failure to do so may be attributed to the infrequent use of specialized isolation techniques that are required to grow Capnocytophaga spp. To our knowledge, successful isolation of these organisms from a cat with nasopharyng

Capnocytophaga bacteremia: clinical features of patients and antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates.

Capnocytophaga has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen causing systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals with granulocytopenia and oral ulceration. Treatment of Capnocytophaga infection is often empiric. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical features of all patients with Capnocytophaga bacteremia seen at the National Taiwan University Hospital between January 1981 and December 1996 and the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates recovered from these patients. All the patients had underlying diseases, namely neoplastic disease (9 patients), hyperthyroidism (1), and b

Capnocytophaga canimorsus infections in human: review of the literature and cases report.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus, formerly designated Dysgonic fermenter 2 (DF-2) was first described in 1976; it is a commensal bacterium of dogs and cats saliva, which can be transmitted to man by bite (54% of cases), scratch (8.5%), or mere exposure to animals (27%). We present a review of the clinical and microbiological characteristics of the Capnocytophaga canimorsus infections and 12 cases of infection in France. Over 100 cases of human infections have been reported, mainly septicemia in patients with diminished defences, due to splenectomy (33%), alcohol abuse (24%), immunosuppression (5%). H

Rare Capnocytophaga sputigena bacteremia in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Capnocytophaga sputigena, a species of bacteria resident in the human oral cavity, can rarely cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. The present case concerns a 40-year-old man with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, diagnosed in 2001, who underwent two hematopoietic stem cell transplants and had experienced relapses and remissions over nearly a 20-year period. Because his acute lymphoblastic leukemia was refractory, he was no longer receiving active treatment and was instead managed with supportive care. Under these circumstances, he developed febrile neutropenia with stomat

A case report of Capnocytophaga canimorsus meningitis with failure of ceftriaxone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative zoonotic organism that has the potential to cause devastating human infection. Historically, treatment with beta-lactams including penicillin and ceftriaxone has been effective. METHODS: We describe a complicated case of C. canimorsus meningitis in a 70-year-old female following a superficial puncture wound from her dog's teeth. RESULTS: The case described here was complicated by seizures following treatment with ceftriaxone therapy. This case is also the first reported case of C. canimorsus meningitis associated with moyamoya disease

A Case of Uncomplicated Bacteremia Caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus in an Immunocompetent Patient.

This report describes uncomplicated bacteremia caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus in an immunocompetent woman who presented with rigor and fever. She was hemodynamically stable. Two blood samples were immediately cultured because rigor indicated bacteremia. Although her symptoms were relieved, Gram-negative rods grew from blood cultures. She noted that she had been bitten by her dog before the first examination. The bacterium was confirmed as C. canimorsus by gene analysis. Infection with C. canimorsus can be fatal when accompanied by sepsis in elderly or immunocompromised patients. However,

Capnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis in a methotrexate-treated patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative rod that can be transmitted primarily by dog bites. This life-threatening organism commonly causes sepsis in patients with splenectomy or alcoholism. A 53-year-old rheumatoid arthritis male treated with methotrexate (MTX) for 5 years was admitted for a 4-day history of fever and dyspnea. He had been bitten on a finger by the family dog 4 days before onset. Laboratory tests revealed pancytopenia, acute renal failure, and evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation, and he subsequently developed acute respiratory distress syndrome. Furthermore,

Severe cystic periventricular leukomalacia in a premature infant with capnocytophaga sepsis.

Capnocytophaga is an opportunistic gram-negative anaerobic bacillus found in the oropharyngeal cavity of mammals and is associated with periodontal disease in humans. Sepsis, osteomyelitis, lung abscess, endocarditis, and meningitis have been reported in humans following animal bites. Perinatal infection with Capnocytophaga is infrequent and is generally considered to have a low risk of morbidity to the mother and fetus. We report a case of neonatal Capnocytophaga sepsis associated with the development of severe cystic periventricular leukomalacia.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection in cats: ABCD guidelines on prevention and management.

OVERVIEW: Capnocytophaga canimorsus and Capnocytophaga cynodegmi are part of the normal bacterial flora of the oral cavity of dogs and cats. C canimorsus is more pathogenic and causes more severe infections in humans. INFECTION: Disease is less frequently seen after a cat bite, scratch or close contact than after dog contacts. Serious disease has been reported in people, especially associated with immunocompromise and alcoholism. Disease in cats is not well documented; two cases of respiratory infection have been associated with the presence of these bacteria. DIAGNOSIS: Diagnosis is based o

Resistance of Capnocytophaga canimorsus to killing by human complement and polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a bacterium of the canine oral flora known since 1976 to cause rare but severe septicemia and peripheral gangrene in patients that have been in contact with a dog. It was recently shown that these bacteria do not elicit an inflammatory response (H. Shin, M. Mally, M. Kuhn, C. Paroz, and G. R. Cornelis, J. Infect. Dis. 195:375-386, 2007). Here, we analyze their sensitivity to the innate immune system. Bacteria from the archetype strain Cc5 were highly resistant to killing by complement. There was little membrane attack complex (MAC) deposition in spite of C3b deposi

Capnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis presenting as an acute abdomen in an asplenic patient.

Acute abdominal symptoms are frequently caused by surgical intra-abdominal problems. However, the differential diagnosis also includes several internal diseases. Overwhelming infections may present with acute abdominal signs, particularly in the immunocompromised host. Asplenic patients are highly susceptible to infections with encapsulated bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria meningitidis. Severe infections due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus (DF2), are also common in this group. C. canimorsus is a Gram-negative rod, present as a commensal organism in c

First reported case of Capnocytophaga cynodegmi infective endocarditis: A diagnostic odyssey.

Capnocytophaga cynodegmi, a commensal of canine and feline oral flora, is rarely implicated in human infections, with most cases limited to localized soft tissue infections. We present the first case of C. cynodegmi-associated infective endocarditis (IE) in a 39-year-old man with bicuspid aortic valve and alcohol use disorder. The patient presented with sepsis, aortic valve vegetations, and systemic complications, including heart failure and shock liver. Despite negative blood and valve cultures, metagenomic sequencing of plasma (Karius test) initially detected Capnocytophaga canimorsus, while

Capnocytophaga canimorsus-Induced Sepsis Unmasking an Aortic Aneurysm: A Case Report.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative, anaerobic bacillus commonly found in the oral flora of dogs and cats. While often transmitted through animal bites or scratches, severe infections can occur even without documented exposure, particularly in immunocompromised individuals such as asplenic patients. Although rare, mycotic aneurysms caused by C. canimorsus are associated with high mortality. We report the case of a 53-year-old male with a history of splenectomy due to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, currently in remission, who presented with malaise, fever, dyspnea, and abdominal pain.

Mycotic aortic aneurysm due to Capnocytophaga species infection treated non-surgically.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a commensal organism in canine flora, is most frequently transmitted to humans via animal bite. Infection can lead to multiorgan failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and uncommonly mycotic aneurysm. We present a case of a 65-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea with vomiting, and diarrhea that began the evening prior to presentation. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis with contrast demonstrated a 4.3 cm fusiform infrarenal aortic aneurysm concerning for a mycotic an

Capnocytophaga ochracea sialidase drives its biofilm maturation and host cell interactions.

INTRODUCTION: Capnocytophaga ochracea, an early colonizer of oral biofilms associated with gingivitis, plays an incompletely understood role in periodontal pathogenesis. While sialidases are established virulence factors in late-colonizing 'red-complex' pathogens, their function in early colonizers, such as C. ochracea, remains unknown. METHODS: To address this knowledge gap, we identified and characterized Co-NanH, the sole sialidase of C. ochracea. We performed phylogenetic and structural analyses to compare it with known sialidases. Enzymatic assays were conducted using recombinant Co-NanH

Fulminant septic shock caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus in Italy: Case report.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection was recently recognized as a zoonosis. We report the first case of fulminant septic shock in Italy caused by this pathogen. The patient, with a history of splenectomy, died at the main hospital in Brescia with a presumptive diagnosis of sepsis. PCR and sequencing on post mortem samples confirmed C. canimorsus as a causative organism. Our purpose is to alert medical professionals to the virulence of C. canimorsus in asplenic and immunocompromised patients.
