Carbon and hydrogen isotope fractionation of benzene and toluene during hydrophobic sorption in multistep batch experiments.

The application of compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) for evaluating degradation of organic pollutants in the field implies that other processes affecting pollutant concentration are minor with respect to isotope fractionation. Sorption is associated with minor isotope fractionation and pollutants may undergo successive sorption-desorption steps during their migration in aquifers. However, little is known about isotope fractionation of BTEX compounds after consecutive sorption steps. Here, we show that partitioning of benzene and toluene between water and organic sorbents (i.e. 1

3D-CSIA: carbon, chlorine, and hydrogen isotope fractionation in transformation of TCE to ethene by a Dehalococcoides culture.

Carbon (C), chlorine (Cl), and hydrogen (H) isotope effects were determined during dechlorination of TCE to ethene by a mixed Dehalococcoides (Dhc) culture. The C isotope effects for the dechlorination steps were consistent with data published in the past for reductive dechlorination (RD) by Dhc. The Cl effects (combined with an inverse H effect in TCE) suggested that dechlorination proceeded through nucleophilic reactions with cobalamin rather than by an electron transfer mechanism. Depletions of (37)Cl in daughter compounds, resulting from fractionation at positions away from the dechlorinat

Dual carbon-chlorine stable isotope investigation of sources and fate of chlorinated ethenes in contaminated groundwater.

Chlorinated ethenes (CEs) are ubiquitous groundwater contaminants, yet there remains a need for a method to efficiently monitor their in situ degradation. We report here the first field application of combined stable carbon and chlorine isotope analysis of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) to investigate their biodegradation in a heavily contaminated aquifer. The two-dimensional Compound Specific Isotope Analysis (2D-CSIA) approach was facilitated by a recently developed gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GCqMS) method for δ(37)Cl determination. Both C and Cl isot

Monitoring trichloroethene remediation at an iron permeable reactive barrier using stable carbon isotopic analysis.

Stable carbon isotopic analysis, in combination with compositional analysis, was used to evaluate the performance of an iron permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for the remediation of ground water contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE) at Spill Site 7 (SS7), F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming. Compositional data indicated that although the PRB appeared to be reducing TCE to concentrations below treatment goals within and immediately downgradient of the PRB, concentrations remained higher than expected at wells further downgradient (i.e. >9 m) of the PRB. At two wells downgradient of the PRB, TC

Depolarization ratio and correlation between the relative intensity data and the abundance ratio of various isotopes of liquid carbon tetrachloride at room temperature.

The room temperature Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman spectra of liquid CCl(4) have been recorded. The intensity ratios of anti-Stokes to Stokes Raman bands as a function of Raman shift are obtained in agreement with polarizability theory. The depolarization ratio rho (nu) as a function of Raman shift is obtained also in agreement with automatically scanned depolarization ratio rho (nu). Ratio of the intensity of the isotopic nu(1) bands indicates small deviation from the theoretical relative abundance of CCl(4) isotopes. The intensity ratio of the [nu(3)-nu(4), (nu(1)+nu(4))-nu(4)] and nu(1) band

Investigation of active site amino acid influence on carbon and chlorine isotope fractionation during reductive dechlorination.

Reductive dehalogenases (RDases) are corrinoid-dependent enzymes that reductively dehalogenate organohalides in respiratory processes. By comparing isotope effects in biotically catalyzed reactions to reference experiments with abiotic corrinoid catalysts, compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) has been shown to yield valuable insights into enzyme mechanisms and kinetics, including RDases. Here, we report isotopic fractionation (ε) during biotransformation of chloroform (CF) for carbon (εC = -1.52 ± 0.34‰) and chlorine (εCl = -1.84 ± 0.19‰), corresponding to a ΛC/Cl value of 1.13 ± 0.35. Carbon and chlorine isotope ratios of chlorinated ethenes migrating through a thick unsaturated zone of a sandy aquifer.

Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) can potentially be used to relate vapor phase contamination by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to their subsurface sources. This field and modeling study investigated how isotope ratios evolve during migration of gaseous chlorinated ethenes across a 18 m thick unsaturated zone of a sandy coastal plain aquifer. At the site, high concentrations of tetrachloroethene (PCE up to 380 μg/L), trichloroethene (TCE up to 31,600 μg/L), and cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE up to 680 μg/L) were detected in groundwater. Chlorinated ethene concentrations were highest a

Carbon Isotopic Characteristics and Evolution of Coal-Measure Gas in the Yushe-Wuxiang Block, Qinshui Basin, China.

This study experimentally analyzed gas composition and methane carbon isotopes obtained from coal, shale, and silty mudstone. Subsequently, by integrating data on thermal maturity, burial depth, gas content, and geological structural characteristics, the geochemical characteristics and genesis mechanisms of coal-measure gas were systematically investigated. The results show that coal-measure gas in the study area is dominated by CH4, with an average concentration of 90.34% and extremely high drying coefficients. A notable negative correlation between CH4 and N2 concentrations indicates atmosph

ASE extraction method for simultaneous carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis in soft tissues of aquatic organisms.

Since lipids are depleted in 13C relative to proteins and carbohydrates, variations in lipid composition among species and within individuals significantly influence delta13C and may result in misleading ecological interpretations. Whereas lipid extraction before IRMS analysis constitutes a way of stable isotope result lipid-normalisation, such a procedure was given up because of the un-controlled effects of the methods used (i.e., "Bligh & Dyer", Soxhlet, etc.) on delta15N. The aim of this work was to develop a simple, rapid and efficient lipid extraction method allowing for simultaneous C an

Effect of source variability and transport processes on carbon isotope ratios of TCE and PCE in two sandy aquifers.

Chlorinated ethenes often migrate over extended distances in aquifers and may originate from different sources. The aim of this study was to determine whether stable carbon isotope ratios remain constant during dissolution and transport of chlorinated ethenes and whether the ratios can be used to link plumes to their sources. Detailed depth-discrete delineation of the carbon isotope ratio in a tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume and in a trichloroethene (TCE) plume was done along cross-sections orthogonal to groundwater flow in two sandy aquifers in the Province of Ontario, Canada. At the TCE site,

[Analysis of compound-specific carbon isotopic compositions of trace-level volatile organic compounds in aqueous phases].

A method combining solid phase microextraction (SPME) with cryofocus technique was developed for the compound-specific carbon isotope analysis of volatile organic compounds in aqueous phase. The detection limit was 10 times better than the conventional SPME method. Under the optimized analytical conditions, aqueous samples of trichloroethylene/perchloroethylene (TCE/PCE) (20 microg/L) and benzene/toluene (10 microg/L) were analyzed. The delta 13C fractionation compared to pure-phase and headspace analysis was less than 0.5 per thousand. The standard deviation was 0.3 per thousand. The method w

Kinetics and mechanism of radium-isotopes dissolution in TENORM scale waste associated with petroleum production using certain organic carbon source: lactic acid solution-case study.

The present study is conducted to explore the dissolution as inferred from the kinetic mechanism for radium-isotopes (228Ra, 226Ra, and 224Ra) in the TENORM scale waste deposited in oilfield pipes and equipment, Gulf of Suez, Egypt. The main efficiency factors for Ra2+-compound dissolution by lactic acid (LA) solution, e.g., reactive organic carbon (i.e., electron-donor source), have been investigated, and optimum chemical conditions have been determined. The obtained data were also employed to predict the leaching kinetics and mechanism of the Ra2+-isotopes removal by three shrinking core mod

Selective Conversion of Carbon Dioxide to Formaldehyde via a Bis(silyl)acetal: Incorporation of Isotopically Labeled C1 Moieties Derived from Carbon Dioxide into Organic Molecules.

The conversion of carbon dioxide to formaldehyde is a transformation that is of considerable significance in view of the fact that formaldehyde is a widely used chemical, but this conversion is challenging because CO2 is resistant to chemical transformations. Therefore, we report here that formaldehyde can be readily obtained from CO2 at room temperature via the bis(silyl)acetal, H2C(OSiPh3)2. Specifically, formaldehyde is released from H2C(OSiPh3)2 upon treatment with CsF at room temperature. H2C(OSiPh3)2 thus serves as a formaldehyde surrogate and provides a means to incorporate CHx (x = 1 o

Development of a Midinfrared Cavity Ring-Down Spectrometer for High-Precision Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Clumped Isotopic Compositions.

A midinfrared cavity ring-down (CRD) spectrometer was developed employing a 4.44 μm quantum cascade laser (QCL) for the sensitive detection of CO2 isotopologues, including 12C16O2 (44), 13C16O2 (45), 12C16O18O (46), and 13C16O18O (47). Instead of using an acousto-optic modulator (AOM), rapid QCL current switching was employed to initiate ring-down events, effectively reducing optical losses typically introduced by the AOM and simplifying the system design. The spectrometer incorporated a high-finesse (∼50,000) optical cavity, achieving a minimum detectable absorption coefficient (MDAC) of 2.2

Livelihood and Dietary Transitions in Subsistence Populations of Northern Laos: Insights From Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotope Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Rural populations in northern Laos have experienced dramatic socioeconomic transformation driven by national policies and regional economic integration, substantially influencing their self-sufficient livelihoods. To investigate how these changes have manifested in local subsistence contexts, we compared hair carbon and nitrogen isotope values between two populations representing swidden- and paddy-farming systems, and assessed how isotopic variations reflect the differences in subsistence practices and degrees of livelihood transformation. By analyzing commonly consumed foodstuffs

Arithmetic normalisation models for the effects of lipid on carbon stable isotope values in silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) tissue.

Invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) threaten Mississippi River basin ecosystems due to their ability to outcompete native species. Stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis has been used to study how silver carp impact native ecosystems, but lipids in fish tissues commonly bias their δ13C values. Chemical lipid extraction and mathematical equations that normalise δ13C values for lipid content can account for this bias, but have not been assessed for silver carp. We examined δ13C, δ15N, and C:N ratios before and after chemical lipid extraction using 2:1 chloroform

Thermal Imaging Reliability for Estimating Grain Yield and Carbon Isotope Discrimination in Wheat Genotypes: Importance of the Environmental Conditions.

Canopy temperature (Tc) by thermal imaging is a useful tool to study plant water status and estimate other crop traits. This work seeks to estimate grain yield (GY) and carbon discrimination (Δ13C) from stress degree day (SDD = Tc - air temperature, Ta), considering the effect of a number of environmental variables such as the averages of the maximum vapor pressure deficit (VPDmax) and the ambient temperature (Tmax), and the soil water content (SWC). For this, a set of 384 and a subset of 16 genotypes of spring bread wheat were evaluated in two Mediterranean-climate sites under water stress (W

Molecular and carbon isotopic characterization of an anaerobic stable enrichment culture containing Dehalobacterium sp. during dichloromethane fermentation.

UNLABELLED: Biodegradation of dichloromethane (DCM) under reducing conditions is of major concern due to its widespread detection in contaminated groundwaters. Here, we report an anaerobic enrichment culture derived from a membrane bioreactor operating in an industrial wastewater treatment plant, capable of fermenting DCM and the brominated analogue dibromomethane (DBM). Comparative analysis of bacterial 16S rDNA-DGGE profiles from fresh liquid medium inoculated with single colonies picked from serial dilution-to-extinction agar vials showed that cultures degrading DCM contained a predominant
