A Rare Case of Stroke in a 76-Year-Old Woman: Left Atrial Papillary Fibroelastoma as the Culprit.

BACKGROUND Papillary fibroelastoma is the most common type of benign primary cardiac tumor and is usually asymptomatic. However, tumor fragments or surface thrombus can embolize and cause transient ischemic attacks, strokes, or myocardial infarction. This report describes a 76-year-old woman who presented with dysarthria and right-sided weakness due to a stroke associated with a left atrial papillary fibroelastoma. CASE REPORT A 76-year-old woman visited the Emergency Department because she had right-sided weakness and dysarthria from 12 h ago. Brain magnetic resonance image was done at the Em

[Papillary fibroelastoma: a rare but treatable cause of cerebral infarction].

INTRODUCTION: Papillary fibroelastoma is a benign cardiac tumor which can be associated with serious embolic complications. EXEGESIS: We report on a 42-year-old man admitted for an ischemic stroke in the left middle cerebral artery region. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a mitral valve tumor. Surgical excision and histological examination showed a papillary fibroelastoma. Clinical course was uneventful. CONCLUSION: We consider the high embolic potential of this tumor, which represents a surgically treatable cause of ischemic stroke.

Papillary Fibroelastoma of the Left Ventricle in a Radiation-treated Cancer Patient.

We present the case of a 69-year-old female patient with a history of endometrial carcinoma in 1996, who underwent a total hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy. The patient also received chemotherapy and mediastinal radiotherapy followed by cancer remission. Ten years later she presented with heart failure and her Doppler-echocardiogram showed severe mitral regurgitation with pulmonary hypertension and a papillary fibroelastoma in the left ventricle. In 2011, she underwent a mitral valve replacement with a biological prosthesis and the pathology exam revealed valve damage consistent with rad

[A rare cause of myocardial infarction: papillary fibroelastoma of the aortic valve].

Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare, benign endocardial tumour usually located on the cardiac valves. Before echocardiography, these tumours were chance findings either at surgery or at autopsy. With the advent of echocardiography, the diagnosis has become commoner and they are often the cause of systemic embolism justifying surgical ablation. In this case, an aortic valve papillary fibroelastoma presented with myocardial infarction in a 78 year old woman with normal coronary angiography. The diagnosis was strongly suspected at echocardiography and confirmed by histological analysis of the surgi

Tricuspid Papillary Fibroelastoma Mimicking Tricuspid Vegetation in a Patient with Severe Neutropenia.

We report a 72-year-old male with known myelodysplastic syndrome who presented to the emergency department with a 7-day history of fever and dyspnea. Echocardiography revealed a round echogenic mass 13×16 mm in size attached to the atrial side of the tricuspid valve. Considering the high risk of infective endocarditis in the patient with a low absolute neutrophil count (130/mm(3)), emergency surgery was performed. Intraoperatively, a single gelatinous neoplasm was resected, and subsequent reconstruction of the involved leaflet was accomplished using autologous pericardium. The tumor was pathol

[Unusual consequences of foam sclerotherapy].

Neurological disorders are rare complications of foam sclerotherapy. Visual disturbances and headache are the most commonly reported events and are thought to be equivalent to migraine with aura. Exceptionally, strokes have been reported. Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare cardiac tumor, which may embolize in cerebral arteries. We report the case of a patient in whom neurological disorders occurred during a session of foam sclerotherapy, and led to the discovery of a cardiac fibroelastoma.

Double primary left ventricular and aortic valve papillary fibroelastoma.

Papillary fibroelastomas of the heart are relatively rare benign tumors and although they can be symptom free, symptoms such as cerebral ischemia and cardiac infarction can be lethal. It is important to diagnose this tumor using echocardiography, because lethal embolisms can be prevented by surgical resection. Recurrence of this tumor has not been reported and multiple tumors are rare. The present report is a case of double primary aortic valve fibroelastoma with aortic regurgitation diagnosed 4 years after surgery for a left ventricular fibroelastoma with mitral valvular disease.

[Recurrent transient ischemic stroke in a young patient with papillary fibroelastoma of the mitral valve and hyperhomocysteinemia. A case report].

We describe a case of a young patient admitted for recurrent ischemic stroke caused by a papillary fibroelastoma of the mitral valve and a hyperhomocysteinemia. A papillary fibroelastoma is a benign cardiac tumor which can be associated with serious embolic complications. A moderate plasma level of hyperhomocysteinemia is considered as a risk factor of ischemic stroke. The authors suggest that this association increases the risk of ischemic stroke in their patient. The tumor was surgically removed to avoid new embolic events associated with a vitamin B supplementation. After surgery and acid f

[A papillary fibroelastoma of the left ventricule in the presence of a mitral valve prosthesis. A case report and review of the literature].

Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare, benign cardiac tumor. Before echocardiogram came into existence, it was diagnosed only by necropsy or incidentally at surgery. This kind of tumor may appear on the endocardial surface or in any of the valves. Although it is usually small in size, it is associated to embolic phenomena, thoracic pain and sudden death. This report presents the first case of papillary fibroelastoma in the presence of a mechanical valvular prosthesis in mitral position. In a patient 55 years old, presenting inactive rheumatic heart disease. The tumor was detected by means of trans

A rare case of Papillary Fibroelastoma Involving the Pulmonic Valve.

Papillary fibroelastomas involving the pulmonic valve are rare and may present incidentally or with nonspecific cardiopulmonary symptoms. We report a 75-year-old woman with an incidentally discovered right ventricular outflow tract mass ultimately identified as a papillary fibroelastoma arising from the ventricular aspect of the left pulmonic valve cusp. Multimodality imaging, including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, confirmed a mobile, pedunculated lesion without associated valve dysfunction. The mass was excised on cardiopulmo

[Papillary fibroelastoma: retrospective analysis. Clinical presentation and surgical results].

Papillary ibroelastomas are small benign intracardiac tumors known for their embolic potential. Since the introduction of echocardiography with improved resolution and transesophageal imaging techniques, they are being increasingly detected in clinical practice. In recent series, papillary fibroelastoma is considered the most frequent benign tumor of the heart. Our objective was to analyze characteristics and midterm surgical outcome of histologically-confirmed cases of papillary fibroelastoma. We conducted a retrospective study on patients with cardiac tumors submitted to surgical excision be

Papillary fibroelastoma in an unusual location: arising from the left atrial endocardium.

Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is a rare, benign cardiac tumor, often asymptomatic and typically arising from the valvular endocardium. While predominantly located on the heart valves, involvement of the atrial chamber is exceptionally uncommon. This case report presents a 34-year-old female with a history of ischemic stroke, in whom a left atrial mass was subsequently identified. Notably, the tumor was attached to the left atrial endocardium near the left atrial appendage orifice and the anterior mitral leaflet, an unusual location for PFE that made diagnosis difficult. Initially suspected to

[Surgical Treatment of Papillary Fibroelastoma Developed in the Left Ventricle].

Papillary fibroelastomas are rare benign cardiac tumors, which generally arise from the valvular endocardium. Although they have little hemodynamics effects, they can cause some life threatening events such as cerebral embolization. We herein report a case of 68-year-old female with a mobile left ventricular mass of 10 mm in diameter. It was accidentally found on the anterior papillary muscle by echocardiography under evaluation of the angina pectoris. Resection of the left ventricular mass was performed through the mitral valve. Coronary artery bypass grafting to left anterior descending arte

Mitral Papillary Fibroelastoma Revealed by Central Retinal Artery Occlusion.

Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is a very rare benign primary cardiac tumor that preferentially affects heart valves and may lead to severe embolic events. Its diagnosis is now easily suggested by echocardiography, and surgical excision is a safe and effective treatment to prevent recurrence. We report the case of a patient referred for the etiological evaluation of a central retinal artery occlusion, in whom transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) revealed a fibroelastoma located on the mitral valve. This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive cardiac evaluation in a

Aortic valve fibroelastoma: transesophageal echocardiographic diagnosis and surgical excision.

An asymptomatic 31-year-old woman was admitted for evaluation of a heart murmur accidentally discovered at a routine medical examination. A transesophageal echocardiogram disclosed an ostium secundum atrial septal defect and a small mass attached to the inner surface of the non-coronary cups of the aortic valve. The patient underwent closure of the atrial septal defect and excision of the mass without damage to the aortic valve. Hystological analysis of the mass was consistent with the diagnosis of papillary fibroelastoma. Papillary fibroelastoma is the most common of the cardiac valve tumors.

Rapid development of a papillary fibroelastoma in the aortic valve: report of a case.

We report a case of a fast-growing cardiac papillary fibroelastoma (CPF) arising in the aortic valve. A 71-year-old woman was referred to a cardiologist for investigation of palpitations. Cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, and echocardiography showed no stenosis of the coronary arteries, nor any other cardiovascular abnormalities. However, 12 months later she was referred to our hospital for further investigations when she began experiencing chest discomfort on exertion. This time, echocardiography showed an abnormal mass arising from the aortic valve, floating between the left sin

[Thrombus or tumour of the mitral valve--a case of 75-year-old woman with acute coronary syndrome and aortic insufficiency].

Papillary fibroelastomas are rare, primary, benign cardiac tumors most frequently located in the heart valves. They are a potential cause of systemic embolization and may be associated with myocardial ischaemia, transient ischaemic attacks, strokes, or sudden death. We describe the case of 75-year-old woman with diagnosed aortic insufficiency who was admitted to hospital with acute coronary syndrome. The fibroelastoma of the anterior mitral leaflet was diagnosed using transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography. We provide a differential diagnosis and review of the literature concernin

Pulmonary Artery Fibroelastoma Excision in a 67-Year-Old Female Patient Presented With a Chronic Cough.

BACKGROUND: Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare, benign cardiac tumor, most commonly found on left-sided heart valves. Right-sided involvement, particularly the pulmonary valve, is exceedingly rare but carries a high embolic risk. CASE SUMMARY: A 67-year-old woman presented with chronic cough and dyspnea. Imaging revealed a mobile pulmonary valve mass, initially suspected as vegetation. Further evaluation with echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested fibroelastoma. Due to diagnostic challenge and high embolic risk, a diagnostic surgical excision was planned. DISCUSSION: This c

Incidental disclosure of asymptomatic coronary embolic occlusion related to mitral valve papillary fibroelastoma: an unusual finding and a review of the literature.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma (CPF) located on mitral and aortic valves are known to produce systemic embolism mainly represented by strokes, whereas myocardial infarction and sudden death usually result from specific locations around LVOT. Coronary artery embolic occlusion originating from a mitral location has not yet been reported. The case is reported of a 42-year-old man referred for surgical treatment of a mitral valve papillary fibroelastoma disclosed after transitory and completely regressive left hemicorporeal deficiency and previous myocardial infarct. Due to the left chamber locat

Tricuspid valve papillary fibroelastoma: a rare tumor with a diagnostic dilemma.

Papillary fibroelastoma is a rare primary tumor of the heart valves. This lesion can occur on any of the valves or endothelial surface of the heart and has been detected by echocardiography, by cardiac catheterization, during open heart operations for other conditions, and at autopsy. Because of the potential for comorbidities, this tumor should be removed. We present the case of an elderly man with a diagnosis of severe mitral valve regurgitation and moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation who was suspected to have a tricuspid valve vegetation. Mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve repair,
