Beyond the Primary Caregiver: A Scoping Review of Family-Centered Dementia Caregiving Programs.

Most dementia caregiver programs focus on a single caregiver, overlooking diverse caregiving networks that include family, friends, and relatives who provide care. We conducted a scoping review of family-centered dementia caregiving programs (ie, interventions with at least 2 caregivers) to (1) describe program components; (2) identify how family members are included; (3) summarize family-level measurements used and the effectiveness of family-centered programs on these outcomes; and (4) explore if and how programs are culturally adapted. We identified 36 articles and 10 programs (individual-f

Psychological, behavioural, and physical aspects of caregiver strain in autism-caregivers: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: People who give care to autistic individuals (autism-caregivers) experience higher levels of caregiver strain than people who provide care for individuals with other chronic conditions (non-autism-caregivers). This places them at higher risk for psychological, behavioural and physical health concerns. The aim of this study is to delineate psychological, behavioural, and physical aspects of caregiver strain in autism-caregivers compared to non-autism-caregivers. METHODS: We included 3354 adult caregivers from the general population in the Netherlands participating in the second ass

Predictors of Caregiver Burden in Family Caregivers of Male Patients with Opioid Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the factors that correlate and best predict caregiver burden in family caregivers of male patients with opioid use disorders, specifically with heroin use. METHODS: A total of 100 patients with opioid use disorders and their primary caregivers (n = 100) were included in the study. Both patients and caregivers completed sociodemographic data collection forms. The Addiction Severity Index was applied to the patients, and the Burden Assessment Scale, COPE Inventory, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale were applied to the caregiver

Protective factors in preventing delinquency: Caregiver support, caregiver monitoring, and school engagement.

Youth who are potential victims of maltreatment are more likely to commit delinquent acts, which may lead to incarceration. Applying a resiliency framework may shift the focus to positive adaptation. For instance, protective mechanisms promote social, academic, and conduct competencies for at-risk youth. This analysis estimated the protective effects of caregiver perceived support, and caregiver monitoring, and school engagement. It used delinquency as a measure of conduct competence. A latent variable structural equation model was developed using a sample of 1054 youth aged 11-17 who were inv

A case of Wernicke encephalopathy in a dementia caregiver: The need for nutritional evaluation in family caregivers.

A 63-year-old woman had started caring for her mother with dementia 6 months previously. A loss of appetite had appeared 2 months prior to her visit. Neurologically, she experienced mild unsteadiness, but she was fully conscious and had no ocular symptoms. MRI examination of her head did not reveal any notable findings. From these symptoms, the possibility of thiamine deficiency was considered, and her unsteadiness disappeared within a few days after an intravenous injection of thiamine. The burden of caring for a dementia patient may affect the nutritional status of the family caregiver.

Caregiver burden and illness perceptions in caregivers of medically hospitalized youth with anorexia nervosa.

Caregiver burden is common in caregivers of youth with anorexia nervosa (AN) and could impede the successful implementation of family-based therapy (FBT). Thus, it is important to better understand mechanisms by which caregiver burden is developed and maintained. This study aimed to examine the relation between caregiver illness perceptions about AN, symptom severity indicators, and caregiver burden in a sample of medically hospitalized youth with AN. Fifty-one youth with AN (N = 34) or Atypical AN (AAN; N = 17; mean age = 14.85, SD = 1.41; 76% female) and their primary caregivers (N = 47 moth

A support programme for caregivers of children with disabilities in Ghana: Understanding the impact on the wellbeing of caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Four fifths of the estimated 150 million children with disability in the world live in resource poor settings where the role of the family is crucial in ensuring that these children survive and thrive. Despite their critical role, evidence is lacking on how to provide optimal support to these families. This study explores the impact of a participatory training programme for caregivers delivered through a local support group, with a focus on understanding caregiver wellbeing. METHODS: A qualitative longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the impact of a training programme,

The Objective and Subjective Caregiving Burden and Caregiving Behaviours of Parents of Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to examine caregiving burden and levels of distress, accommodating behaviours, expressed emotion (EE) and carers' skills, in parents of adolescents with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: A semi-structured interview assessed the objective burden (time spent across caregiving tasks) in parents (n = 196) of adolescents (n = 144) receiving outpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa. Subjective burden (carers' distress), accommodating behaviours, EE and carers' skills were measured by self-report. RESULTS: Mothers, on average, spent 2.5 h/day of care, mainly providing food and e

Caregiving arrangements of older disabled women, caregiving preferences, and views on adequacy of care.

The role of women in caregiving to elderly people has focused primarily on their involvement as givers of care. In contrast, this article focuses on older women as recipients of caregiving. Data from the WHAS and the WHAS Caregiving Study are used to describe: the relationship of caregiving arrangements among moderately to severely disabled older women to sociodemographic, health and functional status; the characteristics of primary family caregivers and the assistance they provide; preferences for caregiving arrangements among both care recipients and caregivers; and views on adequacy of care

[Caregiver burden in dementia: evaluation with a Japanese version of the Zarit caregiver burden interview].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dementia patients need assistance or supervision in their daily activities. This often places a major burden on their caregivers. The caregiver burden is reportedly a critical determinant for negative caregiving outcomes. However, in Japan, no study evaluating the burden experienced by caregivers for patients with established dementia diagnosis with a standardized instrument has been carried out. The Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI) is a standardized, validated, reliable tool for assessment of the burden of caregivers for dementia patients, and has been used in ma

Caregivers' reported views on firearm counseling.

BACKGROUND: Firearm related injuries are the leading cause of death in children older than one year of age. Safety counseling and prevention are cornerstones of injury prevention. This survey study sought to assess caregivers' recollection of firearm safety counseling and who provided that counseling in the past two years. It further sought to determine whom they entrusted to provide this information, and their preferred modalities for future counseling. Secondary objectives included assessing the relationship between parental perspectives on who provided this counseling and how this counselin

[When caregivers become partners : preventing delirium].

Delirium is a common and potentially preventable complication in hospitalized older adults. Early detection requires interprofessional vigilance and caregiver involvement, as relatives are often the first to notice behavioral change. As part of the preparatory phase of an implementation project in an acute geriatric unit, this article presents a straightforward approach: educating caregivers about early signs, triggers, and practical prevention strategies. Delivered as a brief conversation, tailored to the caregiver's level of understanding and documented in the medical record, this educationa

[Occupational burnout, a reality for caregivers].

Occupational burnout corresponds to a state of thymic frailty linked to the work environment. It concerns all types of occupations but was initially associated with the caring professions (social, medical, etc.). Burnout is particularly prevalent in the geriatric sector where the caregiver's personal investment and confrontation with death are considerable.

Dementia caregivers' lived experience of sleep.

PURPOSE: Poor sleep quality leads to sleep deficiency, an unmet public health problem that is especially acute in caregivers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dementia caregiver's lived experience of sleep. The specific objectives were to (1) explore causes for poor sleep as identified by the caregiver, (2) gain knowledge about how the caregiver manages the sleep experience, and (3) gain an understanding of how caregivers perceive health promotion suggestions to improve sleep quality. METHODS: This was a qualitative study using a phenomenological framework. In 3 focus groups,
