Transmission of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) in simulated ballast water confirms the potential for ship-born spread.

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) remains an unprecedented epizootic disease, representing a substantial threat to the persistence and health of coral reef ecosystems in the Tropical Western Atlantic since its first observation near Miami, Florida in 2014. In addition to transport between adjacent reefs indicative of waterborne pathogen(s) dispersing on ocean currents, it has spread throughout the Caribbean to geographically- and oceanographically-isolated reefs, in a manner suggestive of ship and ballast water transmission. Here we evaluate the potential for waterborne transmission of S

Down syndrome on a small Caribbean island: an uphill battle to obtain services and care for affected individuals.

Most of the geographically isolated island nations in the Caribbean have small populations and low gross national product. As such, many lack important medical and community services. Difficulties are compounded when attempting to care for children with special needs and genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. International charitable organizations can help to provide much needed specialty medical care. Community associations can encourage local relationship building and education. Collaborative efforts with well-funded laboratories can help to deliver molecular characterization for individua

Synergistic effects of algal overgrowth and corallivory on Caribbean reef-building corals.

Indirect biotic interactions play a crucial role in structuring ecological communities, but many of these interactions have not been explored. Algal competition and corallivory are two major stressors contributing to the decline of coral reefs. Here, we provide the first evidence of algal-induced corallivory and synergistic effects between the two stressors on corals. When corals (Montastraeafaveolata) were placed in contact with algae (Halimeda opuntia) together with corallivorous fireworms (Hermodice carunculata) in aquaria, corals suffered high tissue mortality. This mortality was reduced i

Amorphinopsis atlantica Carvalho, Hajdu, Mothes & van Soest, 2004 (Porifera: Halichondriidae): notes on its distribution in the Colombian Caribbean.

Amorphinopsis atlantica (Halichondriidae) is the only known species of its genus in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a brittle, massive sponge with variable projections and coloration ranging from yellow to dark green, characterized by oxeas and accessory styles. Originally described from Brazil's southwestern coast, it has since been reported in several Caribbean sites, typically inhabiting submerged mangrove stilt-roots in coastal lagoons. Although shallow-water sponges in the Colombian Caribbean have been studied, this conspicuous species had not been previously documented in lagoonal systems of t

Vulnerability assessment to tropical cyclones in the North Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua (1988-2022).

The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua (RACCN) is one of the most vulnerable areas to tropical cyclones (TCs), a condition exacerbated by climate change and internal structural disparities. Despite its historical exposure to TCs, significant gaps remain in the systematic analysis of its vulnerability. This research assesses the vulnerability levels of RACCN municipalities to TCs by constructing a Tropical Cyclone Vulnerability Index (VItc), and a municipal typology based on exposure, susceptibility, and adaptive capacity factors. Twelve indicators were selected, normalized, a

Vertical structure of Caribbean deep-reef fishes from the altiphotic to deep-sea boundary.

While recent technical breakthroughs have enabled advances in the description of reefs down to 150 m, the structure and depth zonation of deep-reef communities below 150 m remains largely unknown. Here, we present results from over 10 years of deep-reef fish surveys using human-occupied submersibles at four locations across the Caribbean Sea, constituting one of the only continuous reef-fish surveys from 10 to 480 m (1 site) and 40 to 300 m (3 sites). We identify four vertically stratified deep-reef fish communities between 40 and 300 m bordered by an altiphotic (0-10 m) and a deep-sea (300-48

They argue that an error in sea-level high-stand reconstruction during the last interglacial period (118-130 ka) does not support our hypothesis. Although they are correct in our high-stand reconstruction er

A new genus and species of micro-pagurid hermit crab (Crustacea, Decapoda, Paguridae) from the rariphotic reef zone in Curaçao, Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea.

During field investigations of deep-reefs off the coast of Curaçao in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea, a female specimen was collected of an undescribed micro-pagurid crab with striking dorso-ventral flattening of the right cheliped. It was further characterized by a reduced branchial formula, fourth pereopods with grasping-like spines instead of typically pagurid rasp-like scales, nearly symmetrical uropods and telson, and a minute pair of first pleopods (gonopods). The single specimen was discovered in samples from the rariphotic zone (~130-309 m) obtained using a suction sampler operated

Comparative Analysis of Spatial Distribution of Cholera by Temporal Fragments from 2000 to 2018.

Cholera is caused by V.cholerae (serogroups O1 and O139) and has a close relationship with socio-environmental conditions, especially basic sanitation. Analytical methodologies for collecting quantitative data on health indicators are widely used to support epidemiological surveillance actions in human health. This work aims to verify the fluctuation of the spatial distribution of cholera in the world, by temporal fragments, between 2000 and 2018. During the analyzed period, approximately 5.3 billion cases with 75.6 thousand deaths occurred, with emphasis on the regions of Africa, South Asia,

Synthesis and Structural Implication of the JKLMN-Ring Fragment of Caribbean Ciguatoxin C-CTX-1.

Synthesis of the JKLMN-ring fragment of Caribbean ciguatoxin C-CTX-1, the causative toxin of ciguatera fish poisoning in the Caribbean Sea and the Northeast Atlantic areas, is described in detail. Key to the synthesis are a [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement to construct a seven-membered α-hydroxy exo-enol ether, stereoselective construction of an angular tetrasubstituted stereogenic center on the seven-membered M-ring by a hydrogen atom transfer-based reductive olefin coupling, Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of the KLMN-ring enol phosphate with a highly congested M-ring, and silica gel-mediated epoxide

Challenges and opportunities for quality densitometry in Latin America.

Latin America and the Caribbean region account for 8% of the world's total population. Experts from 18 countries were invited to contribute to this article to provide the best available data on the number, types, and quality of densitometry, DXA experts, the local/national incidence and prevalence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures, and other uses and information on the challenges and opportunities for quality densitometry with examples of local initiatives. Osteoporosis is the primary reason for densitometry in our region, which is not a priority for public health in most countries. Acce

Cascade screening for glaucoma in high-risk family members of African-Caribbean glaucoma patients in an urban population in London.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cascade screening has been used successfully in relatives of patients with inherited cancers and other genetic diseases to identify presymptomatic disease. This study was designed to examine if this approach would be successful in a high-risk group: first-degree relatives (FDR) of African-Caribbean glaucoma patients resident in London. METHODS: African-Caribbean patients (probands) with glaucoma from an inner London hospital setting in a deprived area were asked to disseminate personalised information to their FDR over the age of 30 and to arrange a free hospital-based screen

Pelagic Sargassum spp. capture CO2 and produce calcite.

Pelagic Sargassum is considered an ecological plague that is causing adverse economic impacts to the tourist and fishing industries in the Caribbean. However, its proliferation might be playing an important role to reduce global warming, as it removes a high content of CO2 from the atmosphere and transforms it into calcium carbonate, in its calcite phase, producing sediment after it dies. We quantified the amount of calcite in Sargassum samples collected from the Mexican Caribbean coast in 2019. Samples were divided into three parts: vesicles, thallus, and leaves. In each part, the amount of c

Spatio-temporal dynamics and biotic substrate preferences of benthic dinoflagellates in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean sea.

Epibenthic dinoflagellates were monitored monthly over an 18 month period in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea). These islands are located in the second most affected ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) region of the world. Guadeloupe presented five times more total epibenthic dinoflagellates and two times less abundant Gambierdiscus spp. compared to Martinique, although the area of frequent CFP outbreaks covers Guadeloupe and not Martinique. Results did not show any clear seasonal variations of benthic dinoflagellates abundances. Temperature and salinity were not driving pa

Changes in Caribbean coral disease prevalence after the 2005 bleaching event.

Bleaching events and disease epizootics have increased during the past decades, suggesting a positive link between these 2 causes in producing coral mortality. However, studies to test this hypothesis, integrating a broad range of hierarchical spatial scales from habitats to distant localities, have not been conducted in the Caribbean. In this study, we examined links between bleaching intensity and disease prevalence collected from 6 countries, 2 reef sites for each country, and 3 habitats within each reef site (N = 6 x 2 x 3 = 36 site-habitat combinations) during the peak of bleaching in 200
