Pharmacokinetics and antinociceptive effects of the soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitor t-TUCB in horses with experimentally induced radiocarpal synovitis.

This study determined the pharmacokinetics, antinociceptive, and anti-inflammatory effects of the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) inhibitor t-TUCB (trans-4-{4-[3-(4-Trifluoromethoxy-phenyl)-ureido]-cyclohexyloxy}-benzoic acid) in horses with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced radiocarpal synovitis. A total of seven adult healthy mares (n = 4-6/treatment) were administered 3 μg LPS into one radiocarpal joint and t-TUCB intravenously (i.v.) at 0 (control), 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, and 1 mg/kg in a blinded, randomized, crossover design with at least 3 weeks washout between. Equine carpal articular cartilage fibronectin distribution associated with training, joint location and cartilage deterioration.

Processes involved in equine carpal osteochondral injury have not been established. In other species, fibronectin appears important in chondrocyte-matrix interactions, and levels are increased in osteoarthritis. This investigation aimed to (a) describe fibronectin immunoreactivity in the middle carpal joint of 2-year-old Thoroughbreds, (b) determine topographical variations, (c) compare strenuously trained (Group 1) or gently exercised horses (Group 2) and (d) describe sites with early osteoarthritis. Group 1 (n = 6) underwent a 19 week high intensity treadmill training programme. Group 2 (n =

Owner satisfaction and prognosis for return to work after pancarpal arthrodesis in working dogs in the United Kingdom: a retrospective study (2011-2020).

BACKGROUND: Pancarpal arthrodesis (PCA) is a commonly performed procedure in the UK. However, it is not known whether working dogs in the UK and other European countries with carpal injuries that have undergone unilateral PCA are able to return to working ability as determined by the owner. Medical records from a referral hospital in the UK were reviewed retrospectively for cases of working dogs treated using unilateral PCA. Case files and radiographs were retrospectively analysed for cause of injury, diagnosis, and complications. The ability of the dog to work after surgery and owner satisfac

Determination of breeding criteria for gait proficiency in leisure riding and racing dromedary camels: a stepwise multivariate analysis of factors predicting overall biomechanical performance.

To date, the biomechanical dynamics in camelids have not been addressed, although it might be a factor that can affect selection and breeding in this species. Therefore, the aim of this article is to conduct curve fitting and discriminant canonical analysis to identify the mathematical function that best captures the dynamics of camel locomotion and to study the impact of kinematic, morphometric, physiological, and phaneroptic variables on gait performance in leisure riding and racing activities in dromedaries, respectively. The cubic function emerged as the most suitable mathematical model to

Histopathological findings on ulcerative lesions of carpal and tarsal joints in Japanese black cattle.

In order to determine the pathogenesis of ulcerative lesions of the articular cartilages in Japanese Black cattle, tissue samples of the ulcerative lesion, marginal portion of the ulcer, macroscopically normal portions and synovial membranes were histopathologically examined by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and contact microradiography. The results are summarized as follows: (1) In the ulcerative lesions, degeneration and complete destruction of articular cartilage and its replacement with a proliferation of myelogenic connective tissue were observed. (2) In macroscopically no

Proximodorsal first phalanx osteochondral chip fragmentation in 336 horses.

The results of arthroscopic surgery in the treatment of osteochondral fragmentation of the proximodorsal aspect of the first phalanx and the influence of other fetlock joint lesions on prognosis were evaluated in 336 horses. Horses were classified as: 1) returning to previous use at the same or higher class of performance; 2) returning to previous use (regardless of class of performance); or 3) failing to return to previous use. Ninety-six horses (29%) had fragmentation alone; 140 horses (42%) had fragmentation and additional fetlock lesions, and 100 horses (29%) underwent concurrent carpal ar

Diagnostic ultrasonography of equine limbs.

In our 3 years of clinical experience, we have found that diagnostic ultrasound provides the veterinarian with a valuable diagnostic tool. It allows the clinician to quantify morphologic change that has occurred as a result of soft-tissue injuries, even when the clinical findings are ambiguous or insufficient. In cases in which aggressive postinjury therapy has been instituted prior to presentation, diagnostic ultrasound is often the only noninvasive method that can ascertain the extent of the horse's injury. Diagnostic ultrasound provides the technology to detect injuries before they become p

[Clinical, radiotelemetric and x-ray research on erythematous polyarthritis in lambs].

Experimental investigations were carried out with 6 lambs each infected i/v with 2 cm3 of a 24-hour broth culture of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae rated at 10(8) microbial cells per cu. cm. The clinical state of the animals was followed up in the course of 60 days, the changes in the cardiovascular system and those in the movements of the rumen being recorded radiotelemetrically, while the changes taking place in the joints were studied roentgenographically. It was found that the causative agent of swine erysipelas was strongly pathogenic for the lambs following a hematogenic infection, causing

Effect of added weight on landing kinematics in jumping horses.

Six event horses jumped a 1.10 m high table fence 4 times under each of 2 conditions; the rider weight condition involved carrying the weight of the rider and saddle (61 kg), whereas the added weight condition included an additional 18 kg weight cloth. Sagittal view, 60 Hz video recordings were analysed using standard methods. Comparisons between the rider weight and added weight conditions using paired t tests (P<0.05) showed a number of significant differences. In the added weight condition the leading forelimb landed closer to the fence, and there were increases in the maximal extension of

Immunogenic potential of carpal implants.

This study investigated whether a cellular or a humoral-mediated immunologic response to silicone carpal prostheses could be detected in animals previously sensitized to silicone. Silicone carpal prostheses were emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). This emulsion was injected into guinea pigs weekly for 6 weeks. Controls received only FCA. Four weeks later a carpal prosthesis was implanted. Histology showed the implanted prosthesis encapsulated by fibrous tissue in sensitized animals, with a mononuclear infiltrate within the fibrous periprosthetic capsule consistent with a cellular i

Effect of parasite dose and host age on the infection with Besnoitia besnoiti tachyzoites in cattle.

Bovine besnoitiosis is continuing to spread in Europe. Therefore, the development of ruminant animal models of infection is urgently needed to evaluate therapeutic and prophylactic tools. Herein, we studied the effect of parasite dose and host age on the infection dynamics with Besnoitia besnoiti tachyzoites in cattle in two independent experimental infections. In experiment A, twelve 3-month-old male calves were inoculated intravenously with either three different doses of tachyzoites (G1: 108 ; G2: 107 ; G3: 106 ) or with PBS (G4). In experiment B, six 14-month-old bulls were inoculated with

Patho-bacteriological investigation of an outbreak of Mycoplasma bovis infection in calves - Emerging stealth assault.

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is an important bacterium, causing severe respiratory infection, and arthritis in dairy animals worldwide. This study is based on 50 suckling calves among which 15 showed respiratory distress, lameness and swollen joints and died later. M. bovis was isolated and identified from all dead (n = 15) and live (17.14%; 06 out of 35) calves on the basis of bacteriological examination. In morbid calves, the carpus and stifle joints were severely affected, while necropsy revealed multiple well-circumscribed calcified abscesses and caseous exudates in cranio-ventral and diaph

Experimental carpal reverse-flow pedicle vascularized bone grafts. Part II: bone blood flow measurement by radioactive-labeled microspheres in a canine model.

Reverse-flow pedicle vascularized bone grafts (VBGs) from the radius, commonly used for carpal nonunion and avascular necrosis, provide superior clinical results. In this experimental study bone blood flow in canine distal radius VBGs was measured to determine the status of the bone circulation immediately after elevation (group 1) and 2 weeks later (group 2). Immediate VBG flow (group 1) was substantial, but significantly less than the contralateral undisturbed distal radius (8.42 mL/min/100 g and 16.53 mL/min/100 g, respectively). At 2 weeks after surgery (group 2) VBG flow was compared with

Ultrasound-assisted diagnosis of renal dysplasia in a 3-month-old Quarter Horse colt.

A 3-month-old foal was presented for correction of bilateral angular limb deformities. Azotemia was detected as an incidental finding. Small, misshapened, hyperechoic kidneys with decreased corticomedullary demarcation were noted with ultrasonography. Additionally, the internal renal architecture was abnormal in that the intrarenal vessels and distant collecting system were not clearly seen in either kidney. Ultrasound-guided renal biopsy was suggestive of congenital renal dysplasia, which was later confirmed at necropsy. Clinical, sonographic, and pathologic features of equine renal dysplasia
