The mechanism of Semen Persicae-Flos Carthami in treating hypertrophic scar: A study based on network pharmacological analysis and in vitro experiments.

Traditional medicine believes that hypertrophic scar (HS) falls into the category of "blood stasis". Chinese herbs for promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, activating meridians, and relieving pain are usually selected to treat HS by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Both Semen Persicae (SP) and Flos Carthami (FC) are confirmed to be effective for HS. Clinically, SP and FC are often used in combination with each other. However, the pharmacodynamic mechanism and molecular target of SP-FC in the treatment of HS are still unclear. Therefore, this study is intended to explore th

Kinetic Study of the Quenching Reaction of Singlet Oxygen by Eight Vegetable Oils in Solution.

A kinetic study of the reaction of singlet oxygen (1O2) with eight vegetable oils 1-8 containing different concentrations of tocopherols (Tocs) and tocotrienols (Toc-3s) was performed. The second-order rate constants (kQ) for the reaction of 1O2 with vegetable oils 1-8 (rice bran, perilla, rape seed, safflower, grape seed, sesame, extra virgin olive, and olive oils) were measured in ethanol/chloroform/D2O (50:50:1, v/v/v) solution at 35°C using UV-vis spectrophotometry. Furthermore, comparisons of kQ values determined for the above oils 1-8 with the sum of the product {∑kQAO-i [AO-i]/105} of t

Safflower oil body nanoparticles deliver hFGF10 to hair follicles and reduce microinflammation to accelerate hair regeneration in androgenetic alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) affects physical and mental health with limited therapeutic options. Novel materials and delivery methods have considerable potential to improve the current paradigm of treatment. In this study, we used a novel plant nanoparticle of safflower oil body (SOB) loaded with human fibroblast growth factor 10 (hFGF10) to target hair follicles and accelerate hair regeneration in AGA mice with few adverse effects. Our data revealed that the average particle size of SOB-hFGF10 was 226.73 ± 9.98 nm, with a spherical and uniform structure, and that SOB-hFGF10 was quicker to pre

[Protective effect of alpha-linolenic acid in encephalomalacia in chickens].

Encephalomacia is a vitamin E deficiency syndrome which affects the cerebellum of young chicks. The lesion includes degenerative alterations of cellular and fibrillar elements, apparently as the result of the ischaemia caused by thrombotic events in the microvascular system. A supply of linoleic acid, as fatty acid methyl esters prepared from safflower oil (Carthamus tinctorius), caused a high incidence of encephalomalacia. On the other hand, linseed oil esters, rich in alpha-linolenic acid, did not induce any symptoms and protected the chicks to a large extend against the development of signs

Hydroxysafflor yellow A alleviates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion in hyperlipidemic animals through the suppression of TLR4 signaling.

Hyperlipidemia aggravates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury through stimulating excessive inflammatory response. Therefore, blockade of inflammatory signal is a potential therapeutic management for MI/R complicated with hyperlipidemia. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA, a monomer extracted from Carthamus tinctorius L.), was studied in this article to address that the regulation of inflammatory signal would alleviate MI/R combined with hyperlipidemia injury. High-fat diet induced hyperlipidemia worsened MI/R mediated heart injury (elevation of infarct size, CK-MB and LDH activity), acti

Lipid utilization efficiency and metabolic responses in lactating fat-tailed Turki-Qashqaei ewes fed graded levels of cracked safflower.

Although lipid supplementation is common in small ruminant diets to boost energy and essential fatty acids, little is known about how fat-tailed ewes adapt physiologically and utilize lipids during lactation. We addressed this gap by feeding graded levels of cracked safflower (0%, 3%, and 6% of dry matter) in lactating fat-tailed Turki-Qashqaei ewes (n = 12 per treatment). Nutrient intake relative to metabolic body weight (BW0.75), apparent total-tract digestibility (acid-insoluble ash method), rumen fermentation (pH, ammonia-N, total volatile fatty acids and acetate: propionate ratio), blood

Deep eutectic solvent-based supramolecular solvent for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of aflatoxin B1 from safflower oil seeds prior to HPLC.

Many foods and feeds may be contaminated with toxic mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Aflatoxin toxicity can lead to diverse harmful effects such as cancer, liver toxicity, and birth defects. Consequently, it is essential to establish a selective and efficient technique for analyzing AFB1 levels in foods. In the current work, a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method based on a supramolecular solvent was developed for the rapid assessment of aflatoxin B1 levels in safflower seeds via high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection. In this procedure, a

Neuroprotective Effects of Safflower Flavonoid Extract in 6-Hydroxydopamine-Induced Model of Parkinson's Disease May Be Related to its Anti-Inflammatory Action.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius. L.), a Chinese materia medica, is widely used for the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, with flavonoids being the major active components. Multiple flavonoids in safflower bind to Parkinson's disease (PD)-related protein DJ-1. Safflower flavonoid extract (SAFE) improved behavioral indicators in a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced rat model of PD; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We used a 6-OHDA-induced mouse model of PD and a primary neuron-astrocyte coculture system to determine the neuroprotective effects and mechan

In Vitro Study on Anti-Hepatitis C Virus Activity of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects 200 million people worldwide, and 75% of HCV cases progress into chronic infections, which consequently cause cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HCV infection is treated with currently considered standard drugs, including direct anti-viral agents (DAAs), alone or in combination with peginterferon-α plus ribavirin. However, sustained viral responses vary in different cohorts, and high costs limit the broad use of DAAs. In this study, the ethanol and water extracts of 12 herbs from Lingnan in China were examined in terms of their inhibitory effect on HCV repl

Investigation of biochemical composition of adrenal gland tumors by means of FTIR.

Salicylic acid (SA) is a prominent signaling molecule during biotic and abiotic stresses in plants biosynthesized via cinnamate and isochorismate pathways. Cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H) and isochorismate synthase (ICS) are the main enzymes in phenylpropanoid and isochorismate pathways, respectively. To investigate the actual roles of these genes in resistance mechanism to environmental stresses, here, the coding sequences of these enzymes in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), as an oilseed industrial medicinal plant, were partially isolated and their expression profiles during salinity stress,
