The pathology of four types of chondrodysplasias, viz., type II achondrogenesis, thanatophoric dwarfism, Saldino-Noonan syndrome, and chondrodysplasia punctata were studied. In each of these disorders, cells with features similar to the chief and dark chondrocytes of normal hyaline cartilage were seen to be altered in different ways. There was a total absence of chief cells in type II achondrogenesis. All the chondrocytes present were of one variety at different states of maturation, with the fully matured cell having features of dark chondrocytes. The absence of chief cells was associated wit

Juvenile tissue healing is capable of extensive scarless healing that is distinct from the scar-forming process of the adult healing response. Although many growth factors can be found in the juvenile healing process, the molecular mechanisms of juvenile tissue healing are poorly understood. Here we show that juvenile mice deficient in the chemokine receptor CCR7 exhibit diminished large-scale healing potential, whereas CCR7-depleted adult mice undergo normal scar-forming healing similar to wild type mice. In addition, the CCR7 ligand CCL21 was transiently expressed around damaged cartilage in

The radiolucent cartilage space of eighty-three patients with unilateral or bilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis was measured by a standardized technique. In the majority of patients, whether unilateral or bilateral involvement, there was bilateral narrowing of the cartilage space. In the unaffected hip of unilaterally involved patients, there was a progressive narrowing as skeletal maturity was attained. A concomitant anatomical study of cadaver hips, removed at autopsy from adolescent patients, showed a progressive narrowing of the cartilage as the proximal femur matured. Black female

Particulated juvenile articular cartilage (PJAC) allograft has emerged as a single-stage biologic option for treatment of focal full-thickness cartilage defects, including isolated trochlear lesions. Open techniques are most commonly described, and although a small number of arthroscopic techniques have been reported, precise placement of particulate graft material within the curved geometry of the trochlea remains technically challenging due to high local shear forces, limited working angles, and difficulty maintaining a dry arthroscopic field. We describe a fully arthroscopic technique for t

A novel tri-component bioink composed of methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), alginate, and decellularized cartilage extracellular matrix (dcECM) was developed to enhance both the printability and biological performance of hydrogel scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering. The incorporation of cartilage-specific dcECM was employed as a key strategy to provide a biologically instructive microenvironment while maintaining suitable rheological properties for extrusion-based bioprinting. Rheological analyses revealed pronounced shear-thinning behavior, good thermal stability, and a predominantly elast

Articular cartilage injury is one of the most common diseases in orthopedic clinics. Following an articular cartilage injury, an inability to resist vascular invasion can result in cartilage calcification by newly formed blood vessels. This process ultimately leads to the loss of joint function, significantly impacting the patient's quality of life. As a result, developing anti-angiogenic methods to repair damaged cartilage has become a popular research topic. Despite this, tissue engineering, as an anti-angiogenic strategy in cartilage injury repair, has not yet been adequately investigated.

Articular cartilage (AC) possesses a limited healing potential, meaning that untreated focal joint defects typically progress, leading to the development of degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. Several clinical strategies exist that aim to regenerate AC; however, recapitulation of a fully functional, load-bearing tissue remains a significant challenge. This can be attributed, at least in part, to a paucity of biomaterials that truly mimic the native tissue and provide appropriate cues to direct its regeneration. The main structural component of articular cartilage, type II collagen, d

Transplantation of bioengineered elastic cartilage is considered to be a promising approach for patients with craniofacial defects. We have previously shown that human ear perichondrium harbors a population of cartilage progenitor cells (CPCs). The aim of this study was to examine the use of a rotating wall vessel (RWV) bioreactor for CPCs to engineer 3-D elastic cartilage in vitro. Human CPCs isolated from ear perichondrium were expanded and differentiated into chondrocytes under 2-D culture conditions. Fully differentiated CPCs were seeded into recently developed pC-HAp/ChS (porous material

Articular cartilage lacks natural healing abilities and necessitates surgical treatments for injuries. While microfracture (MF) is a primary surgical approach, it often results in the formation of unstable fibrocartilage. Delivering hyaline cartilage directly to defects poses challenges due to the limited availability of autologous cartilage and difficulties associated with allogeneic cartilage delivery. We developed a decellularized allogeneic cartilage paste (DACP) using human costal cartilage mixed with a crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA)-carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) carrier. The decellular

BACKGROUND: The Turkish Delight technique, initially described by Erol in 2000, involves the use of diced cartilage wrapped in oxidized cellulose (Surgicel™) for nasal grafting in secondary rhinoplasty.
CASE SUMMARY: This paper presents a novel adaptation called Diced Cartilage in Capsula, where diced cartilage is wrapped in the periprosthetic capsule material formed from a previous breast augmentation procedure instead of fascia, a technique based on the Diced Cartilage in Fascia method. Utilizing autologous, biocompatible material minimizes foreign body reactions and enhances graft integrat

Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent condition affecting knee joint that causes loss of physical function and pain. Clinical treatments are mainly focused on pain relief and limitation of disabilities; therefore, it is crucial to find new paradigms assessing cartilage conditions for detecting and monitoring the progression of OA. The goal of this paper is to highlight the predictive power of several features, such as cartilage density, volume and surface. These features were extracted from the 3D reconstruction of knee joint of forty-seven different patients, subdivided into two cate

BACKGROUND: When auriculoplasty is performed for microtia, wire often becomes exposed during the long postoperative period. We have investigated other materials for fixing cartilage. We previously reported that absorbable sutures are more appropriate than wire. The present animal experiments investigated the reasons why fixation of transplanted cartilage is maintained when using absorbable sutures.
METHODS: The costal cartilages of Sprague-Dawley rats were harvested, and three cartilage transplant models were prepared. After bending a costal cartilage into a U-shape, it was fixed by using onl

The development of induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs)has enabled the acquisition of patient-specific chondrocytes by converting somatic cells, such as dermal fibroblasts or blood cells, from patients to iPSCs and then differentiating them toward chondrocytes. We can further generate cartilage tissue from iPSC-derived chondrocytes. Studies on iPSC-derived chondrocytes/cartilage for the regeneration of articular cartilage injury are ongoing. These studies will in the future use autologous iPSCs and allogenic iPSCs from an iPSC stock prepared from donor cells. Drug discovery research for relat
