A sustainable bioprocess technology for producing food-flavour (+)-γ-decalactone from castor oil-derived ricinoleic acid using enzymatic activity of Candida parapsilosis: Scale-up optimization and purification using novel composite.

Ricinoleic acid (RA) from castor oil was employed in biotransformation of peach-flavoured γ-decalactone (GDL), using a Candida parapsilosis strain (MTCC13027) which was isolated from waste of pineapple crown base. Using four variables-pH, cell density, amount of RA, and temperature-the biotransformation parameters were optimized using RSM and BBD. Under optimized conditions (pH 6, 10 % of microbial cells, 10 g/L RA at 28°C), the conversion was maximum and resulted to 80 % (+)-GDL (4.4 g/L/120 h) yield in shake flask (500 mL). Furthermore, optimization was achieved by adjusting the aeration and

Dirt-binding particles consisting of hydrogenated castor oil beads constitute a nonirritating alternative for abrasive cleaning of recalcitrant oily skin contamination in a three-step programme of occupational skin protection.

BACKGROUND: In occupational fields with exposure to grease, oil, metal particles, coal, black lead or soot, cleansing formulations containing abrasive bodies (e.g. refined walnut shell, corn, wood, plastic or pumice) are used. These may constitute an irritant per se. As an alternative, hydrogenated castor oil (also known as castor wax) beads have been developed as dirt-binding particles. A polar surface contributes to their mechanical cleaning effects in removal of oily grime. OBJECTIVES: Standardized examination of the in vivo effects upon the skin barrier of castor wax beads in comparison w

Potential neurotoxicity of the solvent vehicle for cyclosporine.

Nervous system complications resulting from i.v. administration of cyclosporine (CS) are especially frequent in liver transplant recipients. Because CS is insoluble in water, the i.v. preparation is formulated in a polyoxyethylated castor oil and ethyl alcohol. Rat dorsal root ganglion neurons exposed in vitro to the i.v. preparation exhibited axonal swelling and degeneration. No effect of CS (dissolved directly in serum) was seen on testing individual components of the i.v. solution. However, 0.1% polyoxyethylated castor oil (volume of solute/volume of solvent) produced axonal swelling and de

Study of wetting of the animal retinas by Water and organic liquids and its Implications for ophthalmology.

Interfacial properties of the animal retinas are reported. Wetting of the retina-retinal pigment epithelium-choroid-sclera tissues of cow, sheep, and pig eyes by water, silicone and castor oil was explored experimentally. Both water and silicone oils demonstrated complete wetting of the retina, regardless of the viscosity of the silicone oil, whereas the castor oil demonstrated a partial wetting regime. Similar wetting regimes were observed for sheep, cow and pig retinas. The intact surface of animal retina was found to be both hydrophilic and oleophilic. Wetting experiments with double sandwi

Comparative evaluation on the bond strength of AH PLUS sealer to root dentin after using different gutta-percha solvents during retreatment.

Complete removal of gutta-percha during endodontic retreatment is essential for effective canal disinfection and resealing of the root canal system. Gutta-percha solvents may alter dentin characteristics and influence adhesion of sealers. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of castor oil, peppermint oil, wintergreen oil, and xylene on the bond strength of AH Plus sealer to root dentin. Forty extracted human single-rooted teeth were prepared, obturated, and randomly assigned to four groups (n = 10) based on the solvent used during retreatment. Following removal of the root canal filling ma

RcPAL, a key gene in lignin biosynthesis in Ricinus communis L.

BACKGROUND: Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an important seed oil crop. Castor oil is a highly demanded oil for several industrial uses. Current castor bean varieties suffer from low productivity and high risk of insect pests and diseases. High productive and pest/disease resistance varieties are needed. Lignin has been associated to the resistance for pest, disease and lodging. Lignin is produced from several metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway. PAL is the key enzyme of the phenylpropanoid pathway. The gene PAL may assist in the improvement of resistance of castor bean. RESULTS: The R

Stability of radiothyroxine plasma disappearance curve despite catharsis and unblocked thyroidal uptake of radioiodide.

Plasma radioactivity was measured over 21 days after an intravenous injection of 50 muCi of 125I-T4 in eight normal men. No thyroid-blocking medication was given. Four subjects (castor oil group) received 30 ml of castor oil on each of Days 13, 14, and 15, while the other four subjects (control group) were studied without medication. After A 5-day equilibration period, plasma 125I-T4 was measured on Days 5-13 in order to calculate the disappearance curve for each subject and to derive the mean for each experimental group. The curves were then extrapolated to Day 21. Measured radioactivity did

Composition and Antidiarrheal Activity of Bidens odorata Cav.

The antidiarrheal effects of chloroform, methanol, and aqueous extracts of Bidens odorata Cav. were investigated at doses of 200 mg/kg on castor-oil-induced diarrhea. The chloroform extract of B. odorata (CBO) reduced diarrhea by 72.72%. The effect of CBO was evaluated on mice with diarrhea induced by castor oil, MgSO4, arachidonic acid, or prostaglandin E2. CBO inhibited the contraction induced by carbachol chloride on ileum (100 µg/mL) and intestinal transit (200 mg/kg) in Wistar rats. The active fraction of CBO (F4) at doses of 100 mg/kg inhibited the diarrhea induced by castor oil (90.1%)

Topical use of cyclosporine in the treatment of vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

We treated 11 patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis for four to nine months with topical cyclosporine as a 2% dilution in castor oil. No significant side effects occurred, except for mild and transient burning upon administration. Within the first 15 days, both symptoms and signs of the condition improved significantly, and these results were maintained throughout the entire treatment. Relapses of the disease occurred two to four months after the end of the therapy. A double-masked clinical trial of nine patients (2% cyclosporine in castor oil vs castor oil alone) confirmed the results. Tr

Antidiarrheal effects of water-soluble proteins from Plumeria pudica latex in mice.

The water-soluble protein fraction obtained from Plumeria pudica (LPPp) latex has previously been demonstrated to have anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects. In the present study, LPPp was tested for activity against diarrhea induced by castor oil, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) or cholera toxin. Different doses of LPPp (10, 20 or 40mg/kg) significantly inhibited the percentage of diarrheal stools (31.18%, 42.97% and 59.70%, respectively) induced by castor oil. This event was followed by significant reduction of both intestinal fluid accumulation (31.42%; LPPp 40mg/kg) and intestinal transit

Optimization of a Solvent Exchange Method Enabling the Use of Dehydrated Cellulose Nanofibers as the Thickener in Lubricating Oleogels.

A method that enabled the formulation of lubricating oleogels using dried cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as an eco-friendly thickener in castor oil was studied. In their dehydrated state, strong hydrogen bonding between nanofibers and high hydrophilicity are the main obstacles to their dispersion in oil. Hence, clusters of dried CNFs had to be previously detached by their dispersion in water. The resulting hydrogels were then subjected to methanol washes to displace the water from the nanofibers. After centrifugation, the methanol-wetted precipitate was readily dispersed in castor oil, forming an

Schistosoma mansoni: experimental chemoprophylaxis in mice using oral anti-penetration agents.

The ability to prevent schistosomiasis by using an oral chemoprophylactic agent, which acts by preventing cercarial penetration, has been unexplored. We initially examined the effect of praziquantel (PZQ) as such an agent and found that it was moderately effective in blocking cercarial penetration, but that this effect was dependent on the vehicle used to administer the drug. ICR mice were given a total of 200 mg/kg PZQ per os over an 8-hr period in a divided dose of 50 mg/kg/2 hr. At time periods ranging from 0 to 92 hr after the last dose, mice were exposed to approximately 75 75Se-labeled c

The role of stress waves and cavitation in stone comminution in shock wave lithotripsy.

Using an experimental system that mimics stone fragmentation in the renal pelvis, we have investigated the role of stress waves and cavitation in stone comminution in shock-wave lithotripsy (SWL). Spherical plaster-of-Paris stone phantoms (D = 10 mm) were exposed to 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500 shocks at the beam focus of a Dornier HM-3 lithotripter operated at 20 kV and a pulse repetition rate of 1 Hz. The stone phantoms were immersed either in degassed water or in castor oil to delineate the contribution of stress waves and cavitation to stone comminution. It was found that, while in degass

Formulation and Artificial Sebum Effects on the Percutaneous Absorption of Zinc Pyrithione through Excised Human Skin.

BACKGROUND: Zinc pyrithione (ZnPT) is deposited on the skin as a fine particulate and must reach microorganisms localized in the stratum corneum and hair follicles in molecular form to exert its broad-spectrum antimicrobial/antifungal activity. Dissolution of ZnPT particles followed by molecular speciation results in the organic portion, i.e. pyrithione, being more susceptible to skin penetration than the inorganic component, i.e. zinc, or the chelate itself, i.e. ZnPT. OBJECTIVES: To further test the hypothesis that ZnPT skin penetration is rate-limited by dissolution and molecular speciatio
