BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Iron is an essential element that involved in many vital physiological functions in fish, while excess iron concentration causes many toxic effects. Curcumin is a natural popular spice that used as a dietary supplementation and has iron chelating properties. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of curcumin on iron toxicity in catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Also this study assess the antibacterial effect of curcumin against Vibrio anguillarum infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clarias gariepinus were orally exposed to low and high doses of curcumin (40, 80 mg

In this study, we aimed to develop a practical protocol for using cryopreserved sperm for induced/wild/tank spawning of fish species with external fertilization. Experiments were carried out on African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) as a model species. Sperm was collected for cryopreservation and diluted with the cryomedium (266 mM fructose, 20% methanol) at a ratio of 1:1 with a final methanol concentration of 2.47 M pH7.73. Diluted sperm was loaded into 0.5-ml straws and cryopreserved by conventional protocol. Samples were prepared for insemination 24 h later, by thawing for 13 s in a 40 °C wa

In the present study, distribution of steroid hormones (estradiol-17β (E2), testosterone (T), corticosteroids and progestins) in the testis and seminal vesicles (SV) of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis were investigated in two seasons (pre-spawning and spawning phases) of the reproductive cycle. The data showed that the levels of the steroid hormones varied significantly in both reproductive phases and exhibited organ-related differences. Sex steroid levels were highest in the pre-spawning phase and lowest in the spawning phase. The concentration of E2 and cortisol was highest in the testis

Marine animal injuries are rare causes of emergency room visits and vascular injuries worldwide. Penetrating injuries from marine animals risk damage to vasculature, and physicians must be alert to such possibilities. We report a 7-year-old boy with penetrating trauma and retained foreign body in the forearm from a catfish injury. Initial imaging suggested transection of the radial artery, but on exposure in a controlled setting the foreign body was found to compress the artery without any vascular injury. No vascular repair was needed after foreign body removal.

Juveniles of the Mekong giant catfish, Pangasianodon gigas (Teleostei), have 3 sorts of tooth-upper and lower jaw teeth, palatal teeth, and pharyngeal teeth--but adults are toothless. To investigate the histogenesis and disappearance of the teeth, we made serial sections of the mouth and teeth of juvenile fish at 10 developmental stages (from ca. 8.5 to ca. 30 cm in total length) and examined them under scanning electron microscope and light microscope. Observations of teeth and surrounding tissues in the serial sections revealed the process of tooth resorption by active odontoclast-like cells

The effects of sex steroids on spermatogenesis and testicular androgen secretion were studied in juvenile (spermatogonia present in testes) African catfish. Fish were implanted with Silastic pellets containing 11-ketotestosterone (KT), 11beta-hydroxyandrostenedione (OHA), androstenetrione (OA), androstenedione (A), testosterone (T), 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or estradiol-17beta (E2). Control groups received steroid-free pellets. Two weeks later, testis tissue fragments were incubated with African catfish luteinizing hormone (LH) and the amount of OHA secreted in vitro (the main androge

We localized the motoneurons and occipital and true spinal innervation of sound-producing organs in pimelodid catfish. Pimelodids have a stridulatory organ composed of the pectoral girdle and the first pectoral fin ray, a swimbladder with extrinsic muscles to produce drumming sounds, and a tensor tripodis (TT) muscle that inserts on the swimbladder. Sonic muscles are innervated by three branches (rostral, dorsal and caudal) of the occipital nerve (Oc) and the first two true spinal nerves (S1 and 2): pectoral spine muscles (abductor, adductor and ventral rotator) by the rostral branch of Oc and

Two cases of serious infection following catfish spine-related injuries are presented, and the literature on this topic is reviewed. The organisms usually involved in such infections are Vibrio species, Aeromonas hydrophila, Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas species, and components of the flora of the human skin. Irrigation, exploration, and culture of these wounds as well as immunization of the patient against tetanus are recommended. Patients with hepatic disease or chronic illness and immunocompromised individuals are at unusually high risk of fulminant infection due to Vibrio and Aeromonas s

Catfish are one of the few freshwater fishes known to be venomous. Although "finning" of the hand is a frequent injury incurred by catfish anglers that results in intense pain, it rarely results in any long-term sequelae. We present three cases in which acute soft-tissue infections developed, necessitating ray amputations in two patients. The unique habitat and anatomy of the catfish are described and preventive and therapeutic measures are discussed.

The toxic effects of mercurials on the thyroid activity of Clarias batrachus were evaluated after exposure for 45, 90, and 180 days during gonadal recrudescence. Histologically, the thyroid follicles were active with hypertrophied epithelium and reduced colloid content in 90- and 180-day mercuric chloride (HgCl2)- and 90-day methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl)-treated fish. In 180-day CH3HgCl and 90- and 180-day emisan 6 groups, the follicular epithelium appeared atrophic with a wavy and irregular outline and with hypertrophied and hyperplastic cells present in some parts of the epithelium. The production of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypothalamus) has increased worldwide; recently, it was farmed with Nile tilapia in polyculture farms. Polyculture systems and water temperature (25℃ and 33℃) could affect Edwardsiella tarda infection, antibiotic efficacy, and residues. Moribund fishes were collected from three Farms 1-3: Farm 1 (monoculture, Nile tilapia), Farm 2 (monoculture, striped catfish), and Farm 3 (polyculture). Four E. tarda, LAMSH1, and LAMAH2-4 were isolated, whereas LAMAH3 was isolated from both fish spp., where striped catfish were highly susceptible to infection.

Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) are two aquaculture species of great importance. Intensive production is often hindered by poor growth performance and disease mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a commercial fermented yeast product, DVAQUA, on channel catfish and Nile tilapia growth performance metrics and disease resistance. Channel catfish and Nile tilapia were fed practical diets supplemented with 0%, 0.1% or 0.4% of DVAQUA over approximately 2-month feeding periods in recirculation aquaculture systems. To assess t

We describe the histological organisation and mucin content in the digestive tract of the stream catfish Pseudecheneis sulcatus. The aim is to find the modifications of the digestive tract in relation to food resources of its habitat. The oesophageal mucosa consists of stratified squamous epithelium with many mucous-secreting cells. The thick muscularis contains an inner longitudinal and outer circular, striated muscle cells. The stomach is J-shaped and shows 6-7 thick mucosal folds that are separated from the submucosa by an organised muscularis mucosae. The mucosa consists of superficial cel

Neurokinin B (NKB), a recently discovered neuropeptide, plays a crucial role in regulating the kiss-GnRH neurons in vertebrate's brain. NKB is also characterized in gonadal tissues; however, its role in gonads is poorly understood. Therefore, in the present study, the effects of NKB on gonadal steroidogenesis and gametogenesis through in vivo and in vitro approaches using NKB antagonist MRK-08 were evaluated. The results suggest that the NKB antagonist decreases the development of advanced ovarian follicles and germ cells in the testis. In addition, MRK-08 further reduces the production of 17β

One of the major goals in aquaculture is to protect fish against infectious diseases as disease outbreaks could lead to economic losses if not controlled. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), a class of highly conserved peptides known to possess direct antimicrobial activities against invading pathogens, were evaluated for their ability to protect Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus and hybrid catfish (female Channel Catfish × male Blue Catfish I. furcatus) against infection caused by the fish pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila ML09-119. To identify effective peptides, the minimum inhibitory concentratio

The heart of tropical fishes is a particularly useful model system in which to investigate mechanisms of hypoxic tolerance. Here we focus on insights gained from two groups of fishes, cichlids and armoured catfishes. Cichlids respond to hypoxia by entering a sustained hypometabolism with decreased heart performance to match whole animal circulatory needs. Heart rate is decreased along with protein turnover to reduce adenosine triphosphate demand. This occurs despite the inherent capacity for high levels of cardiac power development. Although highly hypoxic tolerant at the whole animal level, t
