A Deep Model Framework for Morphological Trait Imputation Across Taxonomic Groups.

Incomplete morphological trait data pose major hurdles for trait-based analyses, particularly when missing values, multicollinearity, and sparse sampling constrain inference. These issues limit our ability to quantify trait variation and explore broad patterns of functional differentiation across taxa. Here, we introduce FS-DeepRBFNet, which overcomes these pitfalls through integrating correlation-based feature selection with a dual-layer adaptive radial basis function (RBF) network. This end-to-end approach effectively reduces noise and captures both linear allometric trends and nonlinear mor

Immunohistochemistry of Salivary Enzymes and Morphology of Salivary Glands in Eurycea (Plethodontidae).

Although they potentially share ancestral heritage with the mental gland, salivary glands have not been studied thoroughly in plethodontid salamanders. Previous enzymatic studies in other families of amphibians have identified the presence of proteases and amylases, which are thought to be secreted from the intermaxillary gland and lingual gland. However, no such studies have been conducted in plethodontid salamanders, and the enzyme contents of these glands are poorly understood. We used immunohistochemistry to identify the presence of amylase, protease, and lipase in the glands of three spec

Innate immunity and stress physiology of eastern hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) from two stream reaches with differing habitat quality.

In addition to depriving amphibians of physical habitat requirements (e.g., shelter, moisture, and food), habitat modification may also have subtle effects on the health of amphibians and potentially precipitate interactions with other deleterious factors such as pathogens, contaminants, and invasive species. The current study was designed to evaluate the physiological state of imperiled giant salamanders, the eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), experiencing different surrounding land use that influences in-stream habitat quality. When we compared hellbenders from a stream reach

Is there a therapeutic role for octreotide in patients with ectopic Cushing's syndrome?

The largest published phylogenetic analysis of early limbed vertebrates (Ruta M, Coates MI. 2007. Journal of Systematic Palaeontology 5:69-122) recovered, for example, Seymouriamorpha, Diadectomorpha and (in some trees) Caudata as paraphyletic and found the "temnospondyl hypothesis" on the origin of Lissamphibia (TH) to be more parsimonious than the "lepospondyl hypothesis" (LH)-though only, as we show, by one step. We report 4,200 misscored cells, over half of them due to typographic and similar accidental errors. Further, some characters were duplicated; some had only one described state; fo

Geographic Divergence in the Mechanisms Underlying Physiological Plasticity: Implications for Responses to Environmental Change.

AbstractUnderstanding how phenotypic plasticity is generated, whether through shared or divergent molecular mechanisms, is critical for predicting organismal responses to environmental change. Similar phenotypes can arise from different pathways, which may vary in costs, trade-offs, and consequences for performance. This study examined whether physiological plasticity in a woodland salamander (Plethodon metcalfi) was shaped by common or distinct gene expression patterns across populations distributed along an elevational gradient. In a laboratory acclimation experiment, I measured plasticity i

Convergently evolved linear actuators in ballistic tongues.

Rapid movements in animals depend on efficient energy transfer to overcome inertia. Among vertebrates, dense tissue and limited elastic storage are thought to impose profound constraints on power output, making extreme ballistic performance noteworthy. Here, we show that chameleons (Chamaeleonidae) and some lungless salamanders (Plethodontidae) have independently converged on a shared biomechanical solution: a sliding-based linear actuator that launches the tongue via muscular squeezing of a tapered skeletal rod. This design decouples muscle action from skeletal movement, enabling acceleration

Anatomy of the Critically-Endangered Anji Salamander (Hynobius amjiensis) Provides New Insights Into Morphological Evolution of Salamanders.

The Anji Salamander (Hynobius amjiensis) is a critically-endangered amphibian endemic to the Tianmushan Mountain area in southeastern China. As most of its congeneric species in the ancestral salamander family Hynobiidae, the osteology of H. amjiensis has remained essentially unknown and has hampered efforts in understanding morphological evolutionary patterns of early salamanders. Here, we investigate the skeletal anatomy of H. amjiensis based on microcomputed tomography scans of post-metamorphosed juvenile and adult specimens. Our results reveal Hynobiidae has more early-tetrapod-like plesio

Effects on the middle adult stage of the Tohoku hynobiid salamander, Hynobius lichenatus, chronically γ-irradiated from the embryonic stage.

Tohoku hynobiid salamanders, Hynobius lichenatus (Amphibia, Caudata), were chronically irradiated with 137Cs γ-rays from the embryonic to the middle adult stages for over 3000 days, and the effects on survival, somatic growth (body weight increase), sexual maturation, and histological characteristics were examined. This article reports the effects observed in the middle adult stage (days 1955-3039). Irradiation at a dose rate of 34 μGy h-1 had no effect on any endpoint. At 150 or 500 μGy h-1, secondary sexual characteristics (tubercle at the anterior angle of the cloacal vent for males and ovi

Comparative Toxicity of Aquatic Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure in Three Species of Amphibians.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are contaminants of concern due to their widespread occurrence in the environment, persistence, and potential to elicit a range of negative health effects. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are regularly detected in surface waters, but their effects on many aquatic organisms are still poorly understood. Species with thyroid-dependent development, like amphibians, can be especially susceptible to PFAS effects on thyroid hormone regulation. We examined sublethal effects of aquatic exposure to four commonly detected PFAS on larval northern leopard frog

Seismic sensitivity and bone conduction mechanisms enable extratympanic hearing in salamanders.

The tympanic middle ear is an adaptive sensory novelty that evolved multiple times in all the major terrestrial tetrapod groups to overcome the impedance mismatch generated when aerial sound encounters the air-skin boundary. Many extant tetrapod species have lost their tympanic middle ears, yet they retain the ability to detect airborne sound. In the absence of a functional tympanic ear, extratympanic hearing may occur via the resonant qualities of air-filled body cavities, sensitivity to seismic vibration, and/or bone conduction pathways to transmit sound from the environment to the ear. Variations in Tissue Mercury Contents in Three Species of Adult Salamanders in Streams in Western Maryland.

The purpose of this study was to improve our understanding of the relationship between mercury in three species of adult salamanders and relatively pristine first-order streams in western Maryland. We measured the tissue mercury content of 106 northern two-lined salamanders (Eurycea bislineata bislineata), 111 northern dusky (Desmognathus fuscus), and 107 Allegheny mountain dusky (Desmognathus ocrophaeus) salamanders collected during three sampling periods. Averaged over our entire data set, northern two-lined salamanders had significantly greater tissue mercury contents (29.57 ± 1.32 ng g-1)

Deep-time evolution of regeneration and preaxial polarity in tetrapod limb development.

Among extant tetrapods, salamanders are unique in showing a reversed preaxial polarity in patterning of the skeletal elements of the limbs, and in displaying the highest capacity for regeneration, including full limb and tail regeneration. These features are particularly striking as tetrapod limb development has otherwise been shown to be a highly conserved process. It remains elusive whether the capacity to regenerate limbs in salamanders is mechanistically and evolutionarily linked to the aberrant pattern of limb development; both are features classically regarded as unique to urodeles. Patterns of trombiculid mite (Hannemania dunni) parasitism among plethodontid salamanders in the western Piedmont of North Carolina.

Trombiculid mites are known to parasitize a variety of amphibian species, yet few comparisons of mite parasitism among amphibian species have been made. In this study, we investigated patterns of trombiculid mite parasitism among 3 plethodontid salamanders (Desmognathus fuscus, Eurycea cirrigera, and Plethodon cylindraceus) in the western Piedmont of North Carolina. All 3 salamander species were parasitized by a single species, Hannemania dunni. Desmognathus fuscus harbored mites more frequently (60.4% of individuals) than E. cirrigera (11.1%) or P. cylindraceus (14.6%). Desmognathus fuscus al

Histological and histochemical studies of the secretory components of the salamander olfactory mucosa: effects of isoproterenol and olfactory nerve section.

Secretory components of the salamander olfactory mucosa, sustentacular cells (SC), and Bowman's glands (BG), were examined histologically and histochemically. In the aquatic larval salamander, SC in sensory grooves contained secretory granules; the submucosa contained a single layer of homogeneous, ductless glands. In the land-dwelling adult salamander, SC spanning a flat epithelial sheet contained vesicles. Subjacent to the epithelium in both dorsal and ventral mucosae lay BG whose ducts opened at the surface of the epithelium. In the ventral mucosa, two additional layers of olfactory glands

Morphological relations between the receptor neurons, sustentacular cells and Schwann cells in the olfactory mucosa of the salamander.

The morphological characteristics of olfactory receptor neurons and their relations to the sustentacular cells and to the sheath cells of Schwann in the olfactory mucosa of the salamander (Ambystoma maculatum et tigrinum) were studied using a modification of the rapid Golgi technique. The bipolar receptor neurons had a fusiform-shaped cell body whose apical pole gave rise to a surface-reaching dendrite and a basal pole which gave rise to an axon. The length and width of the dendrite, although variable, were positively correlated with the relative depth at which the cell body was located in the
