Organization of the Subdiaphragmatic Vagus Nerve and Its Connection with the Celiac Plexus and the Ovaries in the Female Rat.

Communication between the ovaries and the central nervous system occurs by peripheral innervation through the celiac plexus, superior ovarian nerve, and ovarian plexus nerve. The vagus nerve is involved in regulating the ovaries, but the neuroanatomical pathway that links them is not clear. Adult female rats were used for gross anatomy, acetylcholinesterase histochemistry, and the immunofluorescence analysis of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH). The results obtained indicate that the right vagus nerve (RVN) travels parallel and caud

Persistent hypotension and other complications of celiac plexus neurolysis: A case report and literature review.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Persistent hypotension is a rare complication of celiac plexus neurolysis. It is important to know what are the main and rare complications and how to treat these in patients who undergo CPN. ABSTRACT: Celiac plexus neurolysis is an effective treatment for visceral abdominal pain in oncological patients. Although it rarely has complications, some side effects may occur. A patient with visceral abdominal pain who developed long-lasting orthostatic hypotension and was treated with the use of corticosteroids after a neurolytic celiac plexus block for intractable pain. Celiac plexus block as treatment for refractory pain related to sclerosing cholangitis in AIDS patients.

Sclerosing cholangitis may be a cause of refractory pain in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. We performed celiac plexus block in three such patients with sever pain from sclerosing cholangitis and a poor response to conventional analgesia. The pain had been centered in the epigastrium and/or upper-right quadrant of the abdomen for 2, 10, and 15 weeks, respectively. Computed tomography-guided celiac plexus block with absolute alcohol and bupivacaine was performed. All three patients reported complete disappearance of the pain immediately after the procedure in two cases

EUS-guided celiac ganglion radiofrequency ablation versus celiac plexus neurolysis for palliation of pain in pancreatic cancer: a randomized controlled trial (with videos).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although EUS-guided celiac plexus neurolysis (EUS-CPN) is frequently performed, its efficacy for palliation of pain in pancreatic cancer is suboptimal. Recently, EUS-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) has been proposed as a palliative treatment option for pancreatic neoplasms. We performed a single-blind, randomized trial to compare the effectiveness of EUS-CPN and EUS-RFA for palliation of pain in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: Patients with abdominal pain because of locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer underwent EUS-CPN (n = 14) or EUS-RFA (n = 12). EUS-R

Single-Center Review of Celiac Plexus/Retrocrural Splanchnic Nerve Block for Non-Cancer Related Pain.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Celiac plexus and retrocrural splanchnic nerve (CP/RSN) blocks are widely used for cancer-related abdominal pain, but there is limited literature on their efficacy for non-cancer related pain. Our aim was to determine the indications and effectiveness of CT-guided CP/RSN blocks performed on patients with abdominal pain from non-cancer related sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT-guided CP/RSN blocks for non-cancer related abdominal pain from 2011-2020 were retrospectively reviewed for patient demographics, procedure details, duration of pain relief, and complications.

A Rare Complication of Ileus Following Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Celiac Plexus Neurolysis: A Case Report.

Pancreatic cancer patients experience debilitating pain, which makes pain management an integral part of the treatment plan. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided celiac plexus neurolysis (EUS-guided CPN) is an alternative palliative therapy for patients with pain due to pancreatic cancer. We report a patient who developed paralytic ileus after undergoing EUS-guided CPN.  A 77-year-old male patient presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain of one-day duration. He was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic adenocarcinoma three weeks prior to presentation for which he underwent EUS-guided CPN. He h

Novel Single-Needle Approach for Retrocrural Celiac Plexus Blockade Using Fluoroscopic Guidance: A Case Report.

Celiac plexus neurolysis has been shown to be an effective analgesic option for patients with visceral pain related to intraabdominal malignancies. In the setting of significant tumor burden, the celiac plexus may be inaccessible, limiting the efficacy of the transcrural approach. This case report describes a novel single-needle approach to retrocrural celiac plexus blockade, allowing for rapid blockade with a needle trajectory contralateral to the aorta in a 73-year-old woman with altered anatomy secondary to advanced metastatic colorectal cancer.

Acute respiratory failure as a rare complication of celiac plexus block in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of vater.

Celiac and splanchnic plexus blocks are considered as terminal approaches for pain control in end stage pancreatic cancer. It may be done temporarily (using local anesthetics) or as a permanent act (using alcohol and/or phenol). Like every other interventional procedure, celiac plexus block has its own potential complications and hazards among them pneumothorax and ARDS are very rare. In this case report we present an end stage patient with adenocarcinoma of ampulla of Vater with involvement of both abdomen and thorax who presented with severe intractable abdominal pain. Bilateral celiac plexu

CT-guided celiac plexus neurolysis: a review of anatomy, indications, technique, and tips for successful treatment.

The celiac plexus is the largest visceral plexus and is located deep in the retroperitoneum, over the anterolateral surface of the aorta and around the origin of the celiac trunk. It serves as a relay center for nociceptive impulses that originate from the upper abdominal viscera, from the stomach to the proximal transverse colon. Celiac plexus neurolysis, with agents such as ethanol, is an effective means of diminishing pain that arises from these structures. Percutaneous imaging-guided celiac plexus neurolysis has been established as an invaluable therapeutic option in the management of intr
