Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is expressed in most human normal and neoplastic tissues of epithelial derivation and may have an association with tumour cell aggressiveness, a stem cell-like phenotype and clinical outcome. Antibody-based strategies for the targeting and capture of EpCAM-expressing tumour cells are showing promise, both as diagnostic tools and potential therapies. The aim of this study was to assess EpCAM expression in canine tumours. EpCAM expression was assessed in tumour cell lines via gene expression profiling and in formalin-fixed and paraffin wax-embedded tissu

The expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) was studied in normal human myocardium and in Chagas' disease myocarditis. We found that NCAM is expressed in the conduction system as well as the myocardium in the fetal heart, but its expression is restricted to the conduction system and absent in the adult myocardium. Chagas' disease is an American endemic disease caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite, which produces myocarditis and a blockade of the conduction system, resulting in cardiac dysfunction. We studied the expression of NCAM in paraffin-embedded human heart tissues fro

Melanoma cell adhesion molecule (Mel-CAM), also known as MUC18, is a cell adhesion molecule belonging to the immunoglobulin supergene family. Because of the importance of cell adhesion molecules in trophoblastic function and development, we studied the immunohistochemical distribution of Mel-CAM in trophoblastic cells in the implantation site and the normal placenta and compared it with a variety of gestational trophoblastic lesions. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from 44 normal placentas, 54 implantation sites (37 normal and 17 exaggerated), 13 hydatidiform moles, 13 placental site

Alcohol exposure during pregnancy disrupts the development of the brain and produces long lasting behavioral and cognitive impairments collectively known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). FASDs are characterized by alterations in learning, working memory, social behavior and executive function. A large body of literature using preclinical prenatal alcohol exposure models reports alcohol-induced changes in architecture and activity in specific brain regions affecting cognition. While multiple putative mechanisms of alcohol's long-lasting effects on morphology and behavior have been i

INTRODUCTION: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) have an increased risk of endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular events compared to the general population. Therefore, the availability of robust circulating biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and atherogenesis may facilitate early recognition and management of cardiovascular risk in SSc. We sought to address this issue by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating various types of circulating cell adhesion molecules involved in endothelial dysfunction and atherogenesis (i.e., immunoglo

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced mucositis is characterised by damage to mucous membranes throughout the alimentary tract. This study aims to investigate the expression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) following treatment with irinotecan.
METHODS: Dark agouti rats received a single dose of 175 mg/kg irinotecan and sacrificed at various time points after treatment. Picro-sirius red staining indicated an increase in collagen around crypts from 24 h in both small and large intestinal regions and this diminished at the later time points. CAMs E-cadherin, P-selectin, E-selectin and integrin-α1 were

This review starts on one of our special interests, the organ preference of metastasis. We examined data on 1,117 autopsy cases and found that the organ distribution of metastasis of cancers of the lung, pancreas, stomach, colon, rectum, uterine cervix, liver, bile duct, and esophagus involved the lung, liver, adrenal gland, bone/bone marrow, lymph node, and pleura/peritoneum. Cancers of the kidney, thyroid, ovary, choriocarcinoma, and breast, however, manifested different metastatic patterns. The distribution of leukemia and lymphoma metastases was quite different from that of epithelial canc

Leucine-rich repeats (LRRs) are motifs that form protein-ligand interaction domains. There are approximately 140 human genes encoding proteins with extracellular LRRs. These encode cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), proteoglycans, G-protein-coupled receptors, and other types of receptors. Here we give a brief description of 36 proteins with extracellular LRRs that all can be characterized as CAMs or putative CAMs expressed in the nervous system. The proteins are involved in multiple biological processes in the nervous system including the proliferation and survival of cells, neuritogenesis, axon

L1 cell adhesion molecule is a transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. L1 plays essential roles in normal development of the nervous system, and the mutations in the L1 gene are responsible for CRASH syndrome, a very rare inherited disorder characterized by corpus callosum hypoplasia, mental retardation, adducted thumbs, spastic paraplegia, and hydrocephalus. Here it is hypothesized that in the normal nervous system, the synthesis and neurotrophic function of L1 is controlled by a positive feedback loop, which consists of L1, L1 sheddases, gamma-secretase, L1 extracellula

BACKGROUND: Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are cell surface proteins involved in the binding of cells to each other, to endothelial cells, or to the extracellular matrix. The soluble forms of CAMs (sCAMs) are thought to be produced by proteolytic cleavage from the cell surface and are shed into the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). The aim of this study was to investigate whether sCAMs, sICAM-1, sVCAM-1, and sE-Selectin were present in GCF in both periodontal health and disease and to examine their relationship with periodontal inflammation.
METHODS: GCF was collected from a clinically healthy

To determine whether primary B-cell gastric lymphoma (GL) is one entity, we examined the expression of three adhesion molecules in the microvasculature of lymphomas. Stromal cells, including vascular endothelial cells, within lymphoid follicies of the gastric mucosa were also investigated. Twenty-two surgical specimens of GL were classified into low-grade malignant lymphoma arising from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (low-grade lymphoma, n = 9), and high-grade malignant lymphoma with (secondary high-grade lymphoma, n = 6) or without (primary high-grade lymphoma, n = 7) a low-grade component

Scanning electron microscopy with immuno-gold labeling revealed that epidermal keratinocytes expressed ICAM-1 and HLA-DR molecules on their surfaces in patterns that differed in mycosis fungoides (MF) and lichenoid reaction (LR). ICAM-1 molecules, visualized as deposits of gold particles, were present as clusters adjacent to the junctions interconnecting the keratinocytes of MF lesions. LFA-1 molecules were seen as granules on the surfaces of all infiltrates, most of which also expressed ICAM-1. HLA-DR molecules were seen continuously along the borders of the individual keratinocytes. In LR, I

The composition of inflammatory cells as well as the expression of cell adhesion molecules (LFA-1/CD11a, ICAM-1/CD54, CD36) in jejunal biopsies from children with active, untreated coeliac disease (CD) has been analyzed and compared with control biopsies. In CD the number of intraepithelial and lamina propria T cells was greater than in controls. ICAM-1 was found on most cells in the lamina propria; many of them expressed LFA-1 as well. In contrast, no ICAM-1+ and a few LFA-1+ cells were noticed in the epithelium. The brush border from control biopsies reacted with HLADR and anti-CD36. In CD,

Olfactory tissues from human fetuses (17.5-28 weeks of gestation) were stained by immunofluorescence for neural cell adhesion molecules (N-CAMs). Staining for N-CAMs was most prominent in the olfactory nerve bundles in the lamina propria, while in the olfactory epithelium, it was present on the olfactory receptor neurons and globose basal cells. The basal cells proper and supporting cells lacked N-CAMs. In the olfactory bulb, only the olfactory nerve and glomerular layers showed moderate labeling for N-CAMs. Western blot analysis showed that the N-CAMs of the fetal human primary olfactory path

Sera from 5 patients with IgM gammopathy and peripheral neuropathy reacted strongly by a sensitive immunospot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test with the myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) purified from human and bovine brains and the novel neural cell adhesion molecule J1 and associated glycoproteins from human brain. Two other members of the L2/HNK-1 family of cell adhesion molecules, the L1 glycoprotein and the neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM, are not recognized significantly more strongly by these sera than by sera from patients with multiple sclerosis. Immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are cell surface glycoproteins that play critical roles during multiple stages of synapse formation, including axon and dendrite growth and guidance, target recognition, axo-dendritic contact formation and its maturation into a functional synapse. Intellectual disability is a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviors. Growing evidence indicates that deficits in synapse formation underlie the pathogenesis of intellectual disability. In this review, we discuss studies show

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a B-cell malignancy whose progression largely depends on the lymph node and bone marrow microenvironment. Indeed, CLL cells actively proliferate in specific regions of these anatomical compartments, known as proliferation centers, while being quiescent in the blood stream. Hence, CLL cell adhesion and migration into these protective niches are critical for CLL pathophysiology. CLL cells are lodged in their microenvironment through a series of molecular interactions that are mediated by cellular adhesion molecules and their counter receptors. The importance
