Nomophobia: Is the Fear of Being without a Smartphone Associated with Problematic Use?

Mobile phones are changing behaviour, relationships, communication and the dynamics of physical environments. As such, reliance on the device for everyday activities has increased. Consequently, "nomophobia", defined as the fear of being without one's mobile phone, has emerged as a new phobia. The current study aimed to determine if nomophobia can increase the likelihood of problematic dependent, prohibited and dangerous mobile phone use. The sample comprised 2838 participants (males n = 1337 females n = 1501) recruited from various online platforms. The instrument used to measure nomophobia w

Mobile phone usage duration and male fertility: A two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.

Mobile phone use has become ubiquitous in modern life, raising public concern over its potential effects on male reproductive health. While several observational studies have reported associations between prolonged phone use and decreased sperm quality or testosterone levels, these findings remain inconclusive due to residual confounding, reverse causation, and inconsistent exposure measurement. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using genetic variants associated with mobile phone usage duration to investigate its causal effects on male fertility. Inverse variance

Developmental trajectories of tobacco use and risk factors from adolescence to emerging young adulthood: a population-based panel study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence to young adulthood is a critical developmental period that determines lifelong patterns of tobacco use. We examined the longitudinal trajectories of tobacco use, and risk factors for its use, and explored the association between the trajectories of mobile phone dependency and smoking throughout the life-course among adolescents and young adults. METHODS: Data of 1,723 subjects (853 boys and 870 girls) were obtained from six waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (mean age = 13.9-19.9 years). To identify trajectories of smoking and mobile phone dependency,

Epidemiology of Intracranial Gliomas.

Gliomas are the most common primary intracranial neoplasms, which cause significant mortality and morbidity that is disproportionate to their relatively rare incidence. Many potential risk factors for glioma have been studied to date, but only few provide explanation for the number of brain tumor cases identified. The most significant findings include increased risk due to exposure to ionizing radiation and decreased risk with the history of allergy or atopic diseases. The potential effect of the cellular phone usage has been evaluated extensively, but the results remain inconclusive. A very s

Distracted on duty: A theory-based exploration of influences leading to mobile phone distracted riding among food delivery workers.

Using mobile phones while riding is a form of distracted riding that significantly elevates crash risk. Regrettably, the factors contributing to mobile phone use while riding (MPUWR) among food delivery riders remain under-researched. Addressing this literature gap, the current study employs the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and various socio-economic factors to examine the determinants of MPUWR. The research incorporates data from 558 delivery workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study utilizes two analytical methods to empirically test the hypotheses, considering non-line

Examining the Acceptability of mHealth Technology in HIV Prevention Among High-Risk Drug Users in Treatment.

Despite promising trends of the efficacy of mobile health (mHealth) based strategies to a broad range of health conditions, very few if any studies have been done in terms of the examining the use of mHealth in HIV prevention efforts among people who use drugs in treatment. Thus, the goal of this study was to gain insight into the real-world acceptance of mHealth approaches among high-risk people who use drugs in treatment. A convenience sample of 400 HIV-negative drug users, who reported drug- and/or sex-related risk behaviors, were recruited from a methadone clinic in New Haven, Connecticut.

Moringa leaf mitigates 4G cell phone radiation-induced alterations in testicular histomorphometry and spermatogenesis during sexual maturation in Wistar rats.

The use of android phones is alarmingly increasing among the late juvenile and adolescent population. The infertility results from the detrimental effects of cell phone electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on spermatogenesis. This study aims to evaluate the protective effect of ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) in Wistar rat's testis against EMR from a 4G cell phone. Five sets of four-week-old male Wistar rats were created. Control group (n=3) with no cell phone; Sham group (n=3) with cell phone in switched-off mode; MOL-1 group (n=6) received 200 mg of ethanol extract of MOL per k

Cellular telephone use and risk of acoustic neuroma.

Despite limited evidence, cellular telephones have been claimed to cause cancer, especially in the brain. In this Danish study, the authors examined the possible association between use of cellular telephones and development of acoustic neuroma. Between 2000 and 2002, they ascertained 106 incident cases and matched these persons with 212 randomly sampled, population-based controls on age and sex. The data obtained included information on use of cellular telephones from personal interviews, data from medical records, and the results of radiologic examinations. The authors obtained information o

Identifying the Causes of Drivers' Hazardous States Using Driver Characteristics, Vehicle Kinematics, and Physiological Measurements.

Drivers' hazardous physical and mental states (e.g., distraction, fatigue, stress, and high workload) have a major effect on driving performance and strongly contribute to 25-50% of all traffic accidents. They are caused by numerous factors, such as cell phone use or lack of sleep. However, while significant research has been done on detecting hazardous states, most studies have not tried to identify the causes of the hazardous states. Such information would be very useful, as it would allow intelligent vehicles to better respond to a detected hazardous state. Thus, this study examined whether

Vestibular schwannoma and cell-phones. Results, limits and perspectives of clinical studies.

The widespread development of cell-phones entails novel user exposure to electromagnetic fields. Health impact is a public health issue and a source of anxiety in the population. Some clinical studies reported an association between cell and cordless phone use and vestibular schwannoma; others found none. A systematic review was performed of all published clinical studies (cohort, registry, case-control and validation studies), with analysis of results, to determine the nature of the association and the level of evidence. Cohort studies were inconclusive due to short exposure durations and poo

How does childhood emotional abuse aggravate problematic mobile phone use among Chinese adolescents: roles of rumination and depression symptoms.

Problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) is a significant concern, particularly among adolescents. Accumulating evidence indicates that early traumatic events, such as childhood emotional abuse (CEA), are predisposing factors for adolescent PMPU. The primary objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) among adolescents, as well as to explore the potential mediating roles of rumination and symptoms of depression. Data were collected from Chinese senior high school students (N = 489, 44.79% males and 55

The outcome of dimethylglyoxime testing in a sample of cell phones in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Nickel dermatitis may be caused by frequent and prolonged use of cell phones. Because little is known about the frequency of nickel release from cell phones, it is difficult to estimate the risk of nickel sensitization and dermatitis among their users. OBJECTIVE: Inspired by a recent case of nickel dermatitis from prolonged cell phone use, the frequency of dimethylglyoxime (DMG)-positive cell phones on the Danish market was investigated. METHODS: Five major cell phone companies were contacted. Two were visited, and the DMG test was performed on a sample of their products. RESULT

Use of a 3D-printed smartphone microscope adapter in a general biology lab course.

High school and undergraduate students often use personal cell phones to document experimental data or to capture images of microscopic observations on their phones. We utilized a 3D-printed smartphone mount adapter for microscopes in a predominantly first-year undergraduate general biology classroom. The hands-free mount is low-cost, works with different brands of phones, different kinds of microscopes, and does not damage the phone or microscope. At the start of the semester, a 10-question pre-use survey was conducted using a 4-choice Likert scale (n = 330). 73% of respondents strongly agree
