Chemoreceptor reflexes and cardiovascular control.

Evidence is presented which indicates that in the absence of other known inputs to the nervous system and during controlled pulmonary ventilation, stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors causes bradycardia and selective peripheral vasoconstriction. These responses may be attenuated, however, by concomitant changes in respiration and arterial blood pressure, and by activity of higher parts of the brain stem. Stimulation of the aortic bodies in mammals in which they are functionally active, causes bradycardia or tachycardia and selective peripheral vasoconstriction. The reflex vascular ef

The gut odorant receptor and taste receptor make sense of dietary components: A focus on gut hormone secretion.

Odorant receptors (ORs) and taste receptors (TRs) are expressed primarily in the nose and tongue in which they transduce electrical signals to the brain. Advances in deciphering the dietary component-sensing mechanisms in the nose and tongue prompted research on the role of gut chemosensory cells. Acting as the pivotal interface between the body and dietary cues, gut cells "smell" and "taste" dietary components and metabolites by taking advantage of chemoreceptors-ORs and TRs, to maintain physiological homeostasis. Here, we reviewed this novel field, highlighting the latest discoveries pertine

The emerging role of perivascular cells (pericytes) in viral pathogenesis.

Viruses may exploit the cardiovascular system to facilitate transmission or within-host dissemination, and the symptoms of many viral diseases stem at least in part from a loss of vascular integrity. The microvascular architecture is comprised of an endothelial cell barrier ensheathed by perivascular cells (pericytes). Pericytes are antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and play crucial roles in angiogenesis and the maintenance of microvascular integrity through complex reciprocal contact-mediated and paracrine crosstalk with endothelial cells. We here review the emerging ways that viruses interact

Extracellular vesicles of U937 macrophage cell line infected with DENV-2 induce activation in endothelial cells EA.hy926.

Endothelial activation and alteration during dengue virus (DENV) infection are multifactorial events; however, the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in these phenomena is not known. In the present study, we characterized the EVs released by DENV-2 infected U937 macrophage cell line and evaluated the changes in the physiology and integrity of the EA.hy926 endothelial cells exposed to them. U937 macrophages were infected, supernatants were collected, and EVs were purified and characterized. Then, polarized endothelial EA.hy926 cells were exposed to the EVs for 24 h, and the transendothelial e

Localization of CO2 sensor related to the inhibition of the bullfrog respiration.

CO2 sensitivity in the airways and the general skin surface of the bullfrog under urethane anesthesia or without anesthesia was investigated. Pressure in the buccal cavity as well as blood pressure in the sciatic artery were measured with a differential or a straingauge transducer. Air containing 2--14% CO2 was introduced into the regions as given below. (1) The nose and the body surface, both regions were separated from each other and independently exposed to CO2. (2) The larynx-lungs, the buccal cavity-lungs, the naso-buccal cavity separated from the airways at the glottis, and the internal

Effect of Ewe Nutritional Restriction During Gestation on the Number of Sertoli Cells in the Offspring: A Meta-Analysis.

Maternal nutrition during gestation critically influences foetal reproductive programming. To clarify inconsistent evidence, a meta-analysis was performed to assess the effect of maternal nutritional restriction on the number of Sertoli cells in ovine offspring. A systematic review in PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus and Science Direct identified three studies (four comparisons; n = 52). Standardised mean differences (Hedges' g) were calculated using a random-effects model. The pooled effect was significant (g = -0.95, 95% CI: -1.49 to -0.41; p < 0.001), with no heterogeneity (I2 = 0%) or public

A putative low-molecular-mass penicillin-binding protein (PBP) of Mycobacterium smegmatis exhibits prominent physiological characteristics of DD-carboxypeptidase and beta-lactamase.

DD-carboxypeptidases (DD-CPases) are low-molecular-mass (LMM) penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are mainly involved in peptidoglycan remodelling, but little is known about the dd-CPases of mycobacteria. In this study, a putative DD-CPase of Mycobacterium smegmatis, MSMEG_2433 is characterized. The gene for the membrane-bound form of MSMEG_2433 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli in its active form, as revealed by its ability to bind to the Bocillin-FL (fluorescent penicillin). Interestingly, in vivo expression of MSMEG_2433 could restore the cell shape oddities of the septuple P

The three-dimensional microanatomy of the pancreatic duct system in the Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, with special reference to fine proximal passages of a high species-specificity.

We have previously shown the duct system in the rat pancreas to consist of two parts: a fine proximal (intercalated) duct and thicker distal (intralobular and interlobular) duct, with the latter part displaying morphological signs indicative of a bicarbonate-rich fluid secretion. In this study the pancreatic duct system in the Japanese monkey Macaca fuscata was observed by scanning electron microscopy after the hydrolytic exposure of cell surfaces as well as by transmission electron microscopy of ultrathin sections. Cellular expression of the water channel aquaporin 1 (AQP1) was also examined

MPI-VGAE: protein-metabolite enzymatic reaction link learning by variational graph autoencoders.

Enzymatic reactions are crucial to explore the mechanistic function of metabolites and proteins in cellular processes and to understand the etiology of diseases. The increasing number of interconnected metabolic reactions allows the development of in silico deep learning-based methods to discover new enzymatic reaction links between metabolites and proteins to further expand the landscape of existing metabolite-protein interactome. Computational approaches to predict the enzymatic reaction link by metabolite-protein interaction (MPI) prediction are still very limited. In this study, we develop

Exercise improves subchondral bone microenvironment through regulating bone-cartilage crosstalk.

Articular cartilage degeneration has been proved to cause a variety of joint diseases, among which osteoarthritis is the most typical. Osteoarthritis is characterized by articular cartilage degeneration and persistent pain, which affects the quality of life of patients as well as brings a heavy burden to society. The occurrence and development of osteoarthritis is related to the disorder of the subchondral bone microenvironment. Appropriate exercise can improve the subchondral bone microenvironment, thus playing an essential role in preventing and treating osteoarthritis. However, the exact me

The Crosstalk between HepG2 and HMC-III Cells: In Vitro Modulation of Gene Expression with Conditioned Media.

Epidemiological studies have postulated an inverse correlation between developing cancer and neurodegeneration. It is known that the secretome plays a vital role in cell-cell communication in health and disease; the microglia is the resident macrophage of the central nervous system which maintains neuronal integrity by adapting as the microenvironment changes. The present study aimed to identify, in a cell model, biomarkers that link neurodegenerative diseases to cancer or vice versa. Real-time PCR and western blot analysis were used to characterize the effects on gene and protein expression o

Gastrointestinal melatonin: cellular identification and biological role.

Melatonin, a pineal hormone, because of its wide activity spectrum, is a subject of much current interest for biologists and physicians. It has been demonstrated that pineal gland is not an exclusive source of melatonin synthesis. Melatonin synthesis has been found in different sites of the organism, and a major source of extrapineal melatonin is the gastrointestinal tract. The role of melatonin in gastrointestinal functions is considered in the present review.

Abdominal chemo- and mechanosensitivity in ruminants and its role in the control of food intake.

Ruminant animals have evolved a large and complex set of stomachs which allow fermentation of fibrous food by symbiotic micro-organisms. These stomachs are well innervated and generate signals which are thought to be important in the control of voluntary food intake. Tension receptors in the muscular wall of the rumen and reticulum are slowly adapting and provide a measure of distension while epithelial receptors are rapidly adapting and provide information on the fibrousness of the digesta; they are involved in the control of stomach motility and voluntary food intake in order to prevent exce

Mitral valvuloplasty: when the art of repair meets the biological science.

The majority of approaches currently described and practiced in mitral repair surgery result in the vertical immobilization of the posterior leaflet, with the anterior leaflet striving to produce an adequate coaptation. Despite the satisfactory hemodynamic outcome and disappearance of mitral regurgitation, this non-physiological situation results in a redistribution of forces within the mitral apparatus with an increased stress on the leaflets. Biological evidences are pointing at the ability of the valvular interstitial cells to actively respond to biomechanical changes, switching their pheno

Cellular dormancy: A widespread phenomenon that perpetuates infectious diseases.

Under adverse environmental conditions, microorganisms are able to enter a state of cellular dormancy which consists of cell cycle arrest and interruption of multiplication. This process ensures their perpetuation in the infected host organism and enables the spread of disease. Throughout biological evolution, dormancy allowed microorganisms to persist in a harsh niche until favorable conditions for their reactivation were re-established. Here, we propose to discuss the dormancy of bacteria and protozoa pathogens focusing on the potential mechanisms and components associated with dormancy.

How cytoskeletal proteins regulate mitochondrial energetics in cell physiology and diseases.

Mitochondria are ubiquitous organelles that play a pivotal role in the supply of energy through the production of adenosine triphosphate in all eukaryotic cells. The importance of mitochondria in cells is demonstrated in the poor survival outcomes observed in patients with defects in mitochondrial gene or RNA expression. Studies have identified that mitochondria are influenced by the cell's cytoskeletal environment. This is evident in pathological conditions such as cardiomyopathy where the cytoskeleton is in disarray and leads to alterations in mitochondrial oxygen consumption and electron tr
