BACKGROUND: Benign fibro-osseous lesions (BFOLs) of the jaws are characterized by the replacement of normal bone with fibrocellular stroma and mineralized material, including bone and cementum-like tissue. Their overlapping radiological and histopathological features often present diagnostic challenges. Recent WHO classifications have refined their categorization, highlighting the importance of distinguishing cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF), and psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (PsOF).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 24 cases (7 COF, 6 JTOF, 11

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma of the jaws is a rare primary malignant tumor of bone. The clinical, radiological and histopathological features of a case associated with cemento-osseous dysplasia is presented.
CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old mixed-race female presented with a large, progressive, swelling of the right mandible. Radiographic examination revealed two associated lesions. Partially defined irregular radiopacities were noted in the left mandible, extending from the premolar to the molar region. The lesion had a cotton-wool appearance and resembled a fibro-osseous lesion; i.e. cemento-osseous

Differential diagnosis among fibrous dysplasias, cemento-ossifying fibromas and cemento-osseous dysplasias is difficult, since there is considerable overlap of histologic features, but also extremely important, since they differ greatly in etiology, clinical behaviour, prognosis and terapeuthic approach. There is no data about the use of immunohistochemistry, a viable and accessible technique, for this purpose. The objective of this study was to investigate, comparatively, the immunohistochemical expression of major non-collagenous proteins (osteonectin [ON], osteopontin [OP], bone sialoprotei

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a fibro-osseous lesion or non-odontogenic tumour that affects craniofacial bones. These lesions are included in the spectrum of fibro-osseous lesions arising from periodontal ligament cells, which can deposit combination of cementum and bone surrounded by fibrous tissue. It clinically, macroscopically and radiologically resembles complex composite odontome and can be differentiated only on the basis of histopathology. They usually occur solitarily as a painless and expansile spherical or ovoid jawbone mass that may displace the roots of adjacent teeth. They p

Although the neoplastic nature of intrabony cemento-ossifying fibromas is beyond dispute, controversy exists regarding the soft tissue counterpart. Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma has been referred to by a variety of terms depending on whether it is accepted as being a true odontogenic tumor or a reactive gingival overgrowth. The management of a patient with peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma in the masticatory mucosa of the anterior region of the maxilla is presented. The differential diagnosis of reactive gingival overgrowths with and without calcification is discussed.

PURPOSE: To investigate the recurrence rate of cementoblastomas for different variables aside from the clinical/radiologic features.
METHODS: An electronic search was undertaken in November/2016. Eligibility criteria included publications having enough clinical/radiological/histological information to confirm the diagnosis.
RESULTS: 141 publications (258 cementoblastomas) were included. There was an equal sex distribution. There was a high prevalence in the second/third decades of life, in the posterior regions, and in mandibular first molars. Lesions were commonly associated with bone expan

There are three types of osseous dysplasia: periapical cemental dysplasia (PCD), focal cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCD) and florid osseous dysplasia (FOD). While PCD is often observed in mandibular anterior teeth, FCD mainly affects mandibular posterior teeth. FOD, on the other hand, commonly involves both jaws. FOD is a type of sclerosing disease that is characterised by intense opaque masses and many areas with different densities. Genetic heritance of FOD is unusual, with only a few reported cases. We describe a case of FOD that affected three family members, discuss its clinical, radiologic

PURPOSE: Different lesions in the fibro-osseous group share microscopic features; thus, establishing a definitive diagnosis based on microscopic features alone can be a challenge. There is a need for additional microscopic tools to aid in differentiating these lesions. This study compared parameters related to vascularity among 3 lesions in the fibro-osseous group: fibrous dysplasia (FD), central ossifying fibroma (COF), and cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of biopsied lesions retrieved from 3 medical centers over a 14-year peri

Hypercementosis is a non-neoplastic condition in which excessive cementum is deposited in continuation with the normal radicular cementum. Apart from the idiopathic nature of hypercementosis, this condition is associated with several local and systemic factors. Cementoblastoma is an odontogenic tumour characterized by the proliferation of functional cementoblasts that form a large mass of cementum or cementum-like tissue on the tooth root. Although hypercementosis and cementoblastoma are typical conditions with distinct clinical evolution, atypical cases may challenge their diagnosis. Because

Cemento-osseous dysplasia encompasses several different clinical and radiographic presentations, including periapical, focal and florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD). FCOD is usually asymptomatic and discovered only fortuitously. No treatment is required unless the lesion is secondarily infected. Oral hygiene advice should be emphasized for patients with FCOD to prevent caries and periodontal diseases and to maintain natural teeth. Osseointegration of implants would likely not be successful in these patients because the bone is abnormal and not well-vascularized.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) of the jaws is currently classified as a benign mesenchymal odontogenic tumor, and only targeted approaches have been used to assess its genetic alterations. A minimal proportion of COFs harbor CDC73 somatic mutations, and copy number alterations (CNAs) involving chromosomes 7 and 12 have recently been reported in a small proportion of cases. However, the genetic background of COFs remains obscure. We used a combination of whole-exome sequencing and RNA sequencing to assess somatic mutations, fusion transcripts, and CNAs in a cohort of 12 freshly collected COFs.

AIM: To present a case of expansive focal cemento-osseous dysplasia and emphasize the importance of differential diagnosis.
BACKGROUND: Cemento-osseous dysplasia is categorized into three subtypes on the basis of the clinical and radiographic features: Periapical, focal and florid. The focal type exhibits a single site of involvement in any tooth-bearing or edentulous area of the jaws. These lesions are usually asymptomatic; therefore, they are frequently diagnosed incidentally during routine radiographic examinations. Lesions are usually benign, show limited growth, and do not require furthe

This article describes the case of a 34-year-old woman whose prosthodontist had referred her for root canal treatment of tooth No. 10, due to an initial diagnosis of apical periodontitis. Although periapical radiolucencies were present, teeth No. 10 and 11 responded positively to pulp vitality tests. A series of periapical radiographs revealed circumscribed periapical radiolucencies on teeth No. 21 and 28, while teeth No. 23, 24, and 27 were associated with mixed radiolucent/radiopaque periapical lesions. All teeth responded to cold stimulus. Based on the clinical and radiographic findings, a

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the radiographic patterns of cemento-osseous dysplasia.
STUDY DESIGN: Fifty-four patients affected with benign fibro-osseous jaw lesions that showed periapical radiopacities and/or radiolucencies in a focal or a multiplex form were studied. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of the patients with cemento-osseous dysplasia were retrospectively studied. Radiographic features of the cemento-osseous dysplasia lesions were classified according to the appearance of calcified bodies. Radiographic visibility of periodontal ligament

Classification of cemento-osseous lesions of the jaws has long been a dilemma for pathologists. A group of 221 cemento-osseous lesions exhibited sufficiently distinctive clinicopathologic features to be separated into a specific category: focal cemento-osseous dysplasia. This entity presents as an asymptomatic, focal, mixed radiolucent/radiopaque lesion with ill-defined borders in the tooth-bearing areas. It was found to occur with greater frequency in women (88%) and in the posterior mandible (77%). The average age at presentation was 37 years and a relative predilection for black patients wa

PURPOSE: Benign fibro-osseous lesions (BFOLs) are heterogeneous intraosseous disease processes sharing overlapping histopathologic features and demonstrate a wide range of biological behavior. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of clinical and radiological findings for the definitive histopathologic diagnosis of benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study evaluating the three main groups of BFOLs: Cemento-osseous dysplasia, ossifying fibromas, and fibrous dysplasia. Previously diagnosed BFOL cases were search

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign growth, considered to originate from the periodontal ligament. It is often encapsulated and predominantly located in the mandible, and presents as a slow-growing lesion, but may cause deformity if left untreated. The definitive diagnosis of these lesions requires integration of its clinical, radiological and histological features. We present a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma in relation to the lower left one-third of the face, and its management.

OBJECTIVES: Benign fibro-osseous lesions (BFOL) constitute a group of pathologic entities with marked overlapping histopathologic features but are diverse in nature and clinical behaviors. Accurate diagnoses of BFOLs necessitate clinical-pathological correlations, which are paramount for their appropriate management. Recent research indicates the potential utility of artificial intelligence in diagnostic pathology. Here, we aimed to assess the performance of the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) models for BFOL classification and investigate its impact on the diagnostic performance of o
