Delayed closure of the anterior fontanelle in Iron Age children from Zaghunluq, northwestern China.

Delayed closure of the anterior fontanelle is often associated with various disorders. However, the phenomenon might be a normal variation. In this study, the anterior fontanelle was investigated in children from the Iron Age Zaghunluq cemetery in Xinjiang, northwestern China. Age at death was estimated by tooth development/eruption in the children. The anterior fontanelle was visually assessed for delayed fusion. Three out of nine children aged between 3-6 years old from the cemetery had signs of open anterior fontanelle. However, there were no signs of craniofacial pathology or developmental

Deficiency diseases in the Kyiv Rus' subadult population: The issue of the small sample effects.

This paper underlines the importance of the small sample effects consideration in paleopathological research providing an example of children from Kyiv Rus' cemeteries dated to the 10th-13th century AD. The study presents data introduction and systematization, i.e., construction of the statistically significant disease profiles combining the analyzed sites according to the distribution of anemia, scurvy, and rickets. Then we present usually provided (often 'associative') interpretations for the obtained results and question their reliability from the perspective of the small samples effects. T

Characterization of the Funeral Groups Associated with Plague Epidemics.

There are several scenarios regarding how burial sites in archaeological contexts are discovered. We will focus on two scenarios according to the degree of historical knowledge regarding the studied sector. The excavation may be performed in a known funeral place or a highly suspected place (e.g., the interior or immediate exterior space in a religious monument or a parish cemetery). Also, the excavation of unexpected graves or graves discovered by chance may occur in places that had unknown or forgotten funeral purposes.

Spatial analyses of infection and disease during chikungunya and Zika epidemics in Managua, Nicaragua.

Chikungunya (CHIKV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses have caused widespread epidemics across the Americas. After several years of minimal transmission, CHIKV is once again spreading in Nicaragua. We investigated spatial aspects of two chikungunya epidemics (2014, 2015) and one Zika epidemic (2016) in a prospective pediatric cohort in Nicaragua. We used generalized estimating equations, generalized additive and mixed-effects models, Kuldorff's scan statistic, and intracluster correlations to analyze the infection and disease status of ∼3,000 initially uninfected participants during each epidemic. We fou

Genomics and social practices at Mogou and other Gansu sites during prehistoric trans-Eurasian exchange.

Beginning approximately 4,000 years ago, southwest-Asian-originating domesticated crops and livestock began appearing in Gansu, a key crossroads in northwestern China, yet the population dynamics and social practices underlying these historically transformative events in the region have not been fully explored. Despite the adoption of western domesticates, genome sequences of 149 individuals from the large Mogou cemetery and ten other sites in Gansu, dating between 4,700 and 3,000 years ago, revealed migrations within East Asian regions but no detectable evidence of genetic influence from west

Three cases of brachydactyly type E from two commingled tombs at the Late Intermediate period - Late Horizon site of Marcajirca, Ancash, Peru.

OBJECTIVE: Here we present the first known examples of brachydactyly from an Andean archaeological context by describing the affected bones, presenting a differential diagnosis, and discussing the cultural implications of there being shortened metapodials in multiple tombs. MATERIALS: 3232 well-preserved tubular bones representing an MNI of 250 human adults. METHODS: Each bone was visually inspected. Measurements were taken with an osteometric board, sliding calipers, and a flexible tape measure. RESULTS: Of 1210 metapodials excavated from eight burial contexts, ten were atypically short.

The great milestones of public health in the Empire and everyday life in São Paulo: 1820-1870.

In this article, I intend to focus on three public health concerns of the nineteenth century in São Paulo, to demonstrate that the great legislative milestones or important epidemics of the period - regarded by historiographers as decisive - had little to no importance on the social processes that drove changes away from the capital. The three concerns I will be addressing are the prison, the cemetery, and the food trade. Because this is a very divergent reasoning from what is now understood as public health, I will begin with a discussion about the concept of health in the nineteenth century,

Seasonal pattern of abundance of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Buenos Aires City, Argentina.

In Buenos Aires, the most crowded city of Argentina, there is a potential risk of dengue virus transmission by the mosquito Aedes aegypti during late summer. The temporal patterns of oviposition activity and abundance of breeding sites of this vector were studied in two cemeteries of the city. Between September 1998 and August 1999, we examined 142 ovitraps weekly and a total of 18,010 water-filled containers. Both study areas showed remarkable differences in the percentages of positive ovitraps (19% vs 8%) and breeding sites (18% vs 1%), but similar temporal abundance patterns. The percentage

Salmonella enterica genomes from victims of a major sixteenth-century epidemic in Mexico.

Indigenous populations of the Americas experienced high mortality rates during the early contact period as a result of infectious diseases, many of which were introduced by Europeans. Most of the pathogenic agents that caused these outbreaks remain unknown. Through the introduction of a new metagenomic analysis tool called MALT, applied here to search for traces of ancient pathogen DNA, we were able to identify Salmonella enterica in individuals buried in an early contact era epidemic cemetery at Teposcolula-Yucundaa, Oaxaca in southern Mexico. This cemetery is linked, based on historical and
