Spatial Ecology of the American Crocodile in a Tropical Pacific Island in Central America.

Conservation of large predators has long been a challenge for biologists due to the limited information we have about their ecology, generally low numbers in the wild, large home ranges and the continuous expansion of human settlements. The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a typical apex predator, that has suffered from all of these characteristic problems, especially the latter one. Humans have had a major impact on the recovery of this species throughout its range, even though most of the countries it inhabits have banned hunting. The last decade has made it clear that in order to i

Patterns of illness in travelers visiting Mexico and Central America: the GeoSentinel experience.

BACKGROUND: Mexico and Central America are important travel destinations for North American and European travelers. There is limited information on regional differences in travel related morbidity. METHODS: We describe the morbidity among 4779 ill travelers returned from Mexico and Central America who were evaluated at GeoSentinel network clinics during December 1996 to February 2010. RESULTS: The most frequent presenting syndromes included acute and chronic diarrhea, dermatologic diseases, febrile systemic illness, and respiratory disease. A higher proportion of ill travelers from the Unite

The emergence of Lyme disease in a changing environment in North America and central Europe.

Lyme disease has recently begun to emerge as a significant threat to human health, both in Europe and the United States. Late sequellae, resembling those of neurosyphilis and multiple sclerosis, may occur many years after initial infection. Spontaneous abortion accompanies arthritis, carditis and neuritis as burdensome short-term sequellae. Thousands of new infections are recognized each year on each side of the Atlantic, although reporting may be incomplete. The disease was described in Europe nearly a century ago and named erythema chronicum migrans, but its etiology has only recently been d

Hashimoto's Encephalopathy With Progressive Cognitive Decline: A Rare Autoimmune Disorder in Central America.

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is a rare autoimmune disorder, typically associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and often presents with rapidly progressive cognitive impairment, psychiatric symptoms, and neurological deficits. Since the first case reported, there have been relatively few reports of HE cases, and it remains rare in Central America. A 59-year-old male patient with a past medical history of hypertension (HTN) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) was hospitalized due to a one-month history of rapidly progressive cognitive impairment associated with behavioral changes and episodes

Community-Acquired Antimicrobial Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Central America: A One Health Systematic Review.

Community-acquired antimicrobial resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CA-ARE) are an increasingly important issue around the world. Characterizing the distribution of regionally specific patterns of resistance is important to contextualize and develop locally relevant interventions. This systematic review adopts a One Health framework considering the health of humans, animals, and the environment to describe CA-ARE in Central America. Twenty studies were identified that focused on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Enterobacteriaceae. Studies on CA-ARE in Central America characterized resistance from

Atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis in Central America: possible interaction between infectious and environmental elements.

Biopsies of 71 cases of atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis from Costa Rican patients were evaluated by histopathological procedures and attempts were made to culture Leishmania from nine biopsies. Leishmanin skin tests were carried out in 31 patients and 112 healthy individuals. Additional biopsies from 19 patients from Nicaragua were evaluated by routine histopathology. Ten biopsies were studied by confocal and nine by scanning electron microscopy. Inorganic material was analysed using an electron probe for microanalysis. Leishmania parasites were isolated from only two biopsies, but 90.3% of t

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in Central America: first enterovirus epidemic in the western hemisphere.

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) is an eye infection that was first noted in 1969 and became a pandemic disease in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Japan in the 1970s. It was not noted in the western hemisphere until 1981. This report describes the clinical experience with AHC in Honduras where it was first seen in the western hemisphere. Clinical presentation includes acute onset with symptoms of foreign body sensation, burning, and photophobia. Signs include lid edema, periauricular lymphadenopathy, conjunctival injection, follicular reaction, and typically subconjunctival hemorrhages. Sinc

Primary central nervous system germ cell tumors in Central America and the Caribbean Region: an AHOPCA 20-year experience.

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system germ cell tumors (GCT) are rare neoplasms in pediatrics. Treatment depends on the histological subtype and extent of the disease. Overall survival (OS) is above 90% for germinomas and 70%-80% for nongerminomatous GCT (NGGCT) in high-income countries (HIC) while data are usually lacking for patients in Low-Middle Income country (LMIC). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the experience of treating patients with CNS GCT in four of eight countries, members of the Asociación de Hemato-Oncología Pediátrica de Centro América (AHOPCA), and determine thei

Comparative analysis of advanced therapy regulatory frameworks in Latin America: perspectives from the ISCT South and Central America Legal and Regulatory Affairs Committee.

Advanced therapies, including gene therapies, somatic cell therapies, and tissue-engineered products, pose distinctive regulatory challenges because of their scientific complexity, manufacturing variability, clinical uncertainty, and long-term safety considerations. Recent clinical advances have heightened the need for regulatory pathways capable of supporting safe, effective, and sustainable access. Across Latin America, regulatory approaches for these products have evolved unevenly, reflecting differences in legislative development, institutional capacity, and regulatory specialization among

Genomic Epidemiology Reconstructs the Introduction and Spread of Zika Virus in Central America and Mexico.

The Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in the Americas established ZIKV as a major public health threat and uncovered its association with severe diseases, including microcephaly. However, genetic epidemiology in some at-risk regions, particularly Central America and Mexico, remains limited. We report 61 ZIKV genomes from this region, generated using metagenomic sequencing with ZIKV-specific enrichment, and combine phylogenetic, epidemiological, and environmental data to reconstruct ZIKV transmission. These analyses revealed multiple independent ZIKV introductions to Central America and Mexico. One in

COELIAC DISEASE IN CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA: time for a concerted approach to its epidemiology.

Central and South America offer an opportunity to resolve some of the current controversies that surround the epidemiology of celiac disease. Through a concerted action which brings together clinicians, researchers and patients there is an opportunity to establish robust data sets which will allow detailed analysis of environmental and genetic factors. In this review available data from the continent together with data from Spain and Italy are drawn together to give a current picture in the hope that it will stimulate further research.

Classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Central and South America: a review of 1028 cases.

The distribution of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) subtypes differs around the world but a systematic study of Latin America has not been done. Therefore, we evaluated the relative frequencies of NHL subtypes in Central and South America (CSA). Five expert hematopathologists classified consecutive cases of NHL from 5 CSA countries using the WHO classification and compared them to 400 cases from North America (NA). Among the 1028 CSA cases, the proportions of B- and T-cell NHL and the sex distribution were similar to NA. However, the median age of B-cell NHL in CSA (59 years) was significantly lowe

A cytogenetic analysis of the Simulium ochraceum species complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Central America.

A cytobiotaxonomic study of the medically important insect vector Simulium ochraceum s.l. revealed two sibling species and one cytotype from various endemic and nonendemic zones of human onchocerciasis in Guatemala and Mexico. Polytene chromosome maps and idiograms as well as notes on the biology of the three taxa designated S. ochraceum A, S. ochraceum B, and S. ochraceum C within the subgenus Psilopelmia are presented. All three taxa exhibit distinct sex chromosomes and taxon-specific suites of autosomal inversion polymorphisms. Simulium ochraceum C differs from both S. ochraceum A and S. oc
