A unified CPG-based and multi-agent control framework for low-cost quadruped robots.

Quadruped robots have gained significant attention due to their superior mobility on uneven and unstructured terrains, offering potential applications in inspection, search and rescue, and field exploration. However, achieving robust locomotion on low-cost platforms remains challenging because of constraints in stability, adaptability, sensing quality, and onboard computation. In this work, we present an integrated motion-control framework that combines biologically inspired Central Pattern Generators (CPGs), a multi-agent reinforcement learning coordination layer, and low-cost hardware adapta

Respiratory rhythm generation and pattern formation: oscillators and network mechanisms.

The respiratory rhythm is generated by the interaction of oscillators disparately distributed throughout the pons, medulla, and spinal cord. According to the classic model, the interaction amongst preBötzinger complex (preBötzC) spontaneously bursting preinspiratory units and Bötzinger complex (BötzC) expiratory cells generates the principal respiratory rhythm, thence relayed caudally to the pattern generating elements and premotoneurons of the rostral and caudal divisions of the ventral respiratory group and bulbospinal units of the dorsal respiratory group. Rhythm and pattern generating elem

Sensory regulation of quadrupedal locomotion: a top-down or bottom-up control system?

Propriospinal pathways are thought to be critical for quadrupedal coordination by coupling cervical and lumbar central pattern generators (CPGs). However, the mechanisms involved in relaying information between girdles remain largely unexplored. Using an in vitro spinal cord preparation in neonatal rats, Juvin and colleagues (Juvin et al. 2012) have recently shown sensory inputs from the hindlimbs have greater influence on forelimb CPGs than forelimb sensory inputs on hindlimb CPGs, in other words, a bottom-up control system. However, results from decerebrate cats suggest a top-down control sy

Ictal video-polygraphic features of perioral myoclonia with absences.

There have been few case reports of perioral myoclonia with absences (POMA) because of the lack of video-polygraphic recordings clarifying the electroencephalogram (EEG)-electromyogram (EMG) correlations. We describe one of the first video-polygraphic studies of POMA in a patient who underwent repeated and prolonged split-screen video-polygraphic recordings. The ictal EEG showed generalized and irregular discharges of spikes or multiple spikes and slow waves, while two concomitant EMG patterns appeared: (1) a rhythmic enhancement of the orbicularis oris and masseter muscles on both sides with

Neuronal mechanisms underlying opioid-induced respiratory depression: our current understanding.

Opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) represents the primary cause of death associated with therapeutic and recreational opioid use. Within the United States, the rate of death from opioid abuse since the early 1990s has grown disproportionally, prompting the classification as a nationwide "epidemic." Since this time, we have begun to unravel many fundamental cellular and systems-level mechanisms associated with opioid-related death. However, factors such as individual vulnerability, neuromodulatory compensation, and redundancy of opioid effects across central and peripheral nervous sys

Masticatory movements and EMG activity following electrolytic lesions of the trigeminal motor nucleus in growing guinea pigs.

Unilateral electrolytic lesions were produced in the left trigeminal motor nucleus (TMN) of six guinea pigs at 49 days of age. Masticatory mandibular movement and EMG data were collected prior to lesioning and at 4 and 12 days postlesion. After the animals were killed 60 days postlesion, dissection and maceration revealed muscular atrophy and craniofacial asymmetries on the lesion side. Analyses of prelesion and postlesion mandibular movement and EMG data indicated significant (p less than 0.05; p less than 0.01) changes in chew cycle durations, dimensions, and EMG activity patterns. Aerodigestive and communicative behaviors in anencephalic and hydranencephalic infants.

The aerodigestive and communicative behaviors of anencephalic and hydranencephalic patients are assessed from literature sources and are compared with documented neural structures present in the brainstem, subcortical, and cortical regions of the brain. Much of the data analyzed corroborate previous neurological studies, which focus on central pattern generators and development in model organisms. However, findings suggest that further research is necessary to determine which components of these systems support these behaviors. A low reporting rate of behavior in tandem with pathology is obser

Interacting biological and electronic neurons generate realistic oscillatory rhythms.

Small assemblies of neurons such as central pattern generators (CPG) are known to express regular oscillatory firing patterns comprising bursts of action potentials. In contrast, individual CPG neurons isolated from the remainder of the network can generate irregular firing patterns. In our study of cooperative behavior in CPGs we developed an analog electronic neuron (EN) that reproduces firing patterns observed in lobster pyloric CPG neurons. Using a tuneable artificial synapse we connected the EN bidirectionally to neurons of this CPG. We found that the periodic bursting oscillation of this

The contribution of the basal ganglia and cerebellum to motor learning: A neuro-computational approach.

Motor learning involves a widespread brain network including the basal ganglia, cerebellum, motor cortex, and brainstem. Despite its importance, little is known about how this network learns motor tasks and which role different parts of this network take. We designed a systems-level computational model of motor learning, including a cortex-basal ganglia motor loop and the cerebellum that both determine the response of central pattern generators in the brainstem. First, we demonstrate its ability to learn arm movements toward different motor goals. Second, we test the model in a motor adaptatio

Seizure-related automatic locomotion triggered by intracerebral electrical stimulation.

We describe the case of an eight-year-old boy, who underwent a video-stereo EEG (SEEG) investigation for the presurgical assessment of drug-resistant epilepsy, related to a right fronto-lateral cortical dysplasia and who became seizure-free after epilepsy surgery. The unexpected finding of the investigations was that intracerebral, high frequency (50 Hz) electrical stimulation (HFS) triggered the emergence of automatic and involuntary forward-backward locomotion during a focal seizure while the boy was standing. This clinical manifestation was different from the chaotic motor activity describe

The role of genetically-defined interneurons in generating the mammalian locomotor rhythm.

Locomotor behavior in mammals requires a complex pattern of muscle activation. Neural networks, known as central pattern generators (CPGs) and located entirely within the spinal cord, are responsible for generating much of the timing and pattern required for locomotor movements. Historically, identification of interneuronal components of the locomotor CPG in walking mammals has proven troublesome, primarily because of the difficulty in identifying functionally homogeneous groups of neurons in the spinal cord. Recently, a molecular approach has been used to identify populations of genetically s

Distinct Strategies Regulate Correlated Ion Channel mRNAs and Ionic Currents in Continually versus Episodically Active Neurons.

Relationships among membrane currents allow central pattern generator (CPG) neurons to reliably drive motor programs. We hypothesize that continually active CPG neurons utilize activity-dependent feedback to correlate expression of ion channel genes to balance essential membrane currents. However, episodically activated neurons experience absences of activity-dependent feedback and, thus, presumably employ other strategies to coregulate the balance of ionic currents necessary to generate appropriate output after periods of quiescence. To investigate this, we compared continually active pyloric

The Expression of Galanin in the Parafacial Respiratory Group and its Effects on Respiration in Neonatal Rats.

The inhibitory peptide galanin is expressed within the retrotrapezoidal nucleus (RTN) - a key central chemoreceptor site that also contains the active expiratory oscillator. It was previously reported that microinjection of galanin into pre-Bötzinger complex - containing the inspiratory oscillator - exerts inhibitory effects on inspiratory motor output and respiratory rhythm. In neonatal rats, the present study aimed to investigate: (1) expression of galanin within the parafacial respiratory group (pFRG), which overlaps anatomically and functionally with the adult RTN, and; (2) effects of gala

Surprising multifunctionality of a Tritonia swim CPG neuron: C2 drives the early phase of postswim crawling despite being silent during the behavior.

In response to a suitably aversive skin stimulus, the marine mollusk Tritonia diomedea launches an escape swim followed by several minutes of high-speed crawling. The two escape behaviors are highly dissimilar: whereas the swim is a muscular behavior involving alternating ventral and dorsal whole body flexions, the crawl is a nonrhythmic gliding behavior mediated by the beating of foot cilia. The serotonergic dorsal swim interneurons (DSIs) are members of the swim central pattern generator (CPG) and also strongly drive crawling. Although the swim network is very well understood, the Tritonia c

Eupnea, tachypnea, and autoresuscitation in a closed-loop respiratory control model.

How sensory information influences the dynamics of rhythm generation varies across systems, and general principles for understanding this aspect of motor control are lacking. Determining the origin of respiratory rhythm generation is challenging because the mechanisms in a central circuit considered in isolation may be different from those in the intact organism. We analyze a closed-loop respiratory control model incorporating a central pattern generator (CPG), the Butera-Rinzel-Smith (BRS) model, together with lung mechanics, oxygen handling, and chemosensory components. We show that 1) embed

Sources and range of long-term variability of rhythmic motor patterns in vivo.

The mechanisms of rhythmic motor pattern generation have been studied in detail in vitro, but the long-term stability and sources of variability in vivo are often not well described. The crab stomatogastric ganglion contains the well-characterized gastric mill (chewing) and pyloric (filtering of food) central pattern generators. In vitro, the pyloric rhythm is stereotyped with little variation, but inter-circuit interactions and neuromodulation can alter both rhythm cycle frequency and structure. The range of variation of activity in vivo is, with few exceptions, unknown. Curiously, although t

Multifunctional laryngeal premotor neurons: their activities during breathing, coughing, sneezing, and swallowing.

To examine whether motor commands of two or more distinct laryngeal motor patterns converge onto a common premotor network, we conducted dual recordings from the laryngeal adductor motoneuron and its premotor neuron within the brainstem respiratory circuitry during fictive breathing, coughing, sneezing, and swallowing in decerebrate paralyzed cats. Expiratory neurons with an augmenting firing pattern (EAUG), whose action potentials evoked monosynaptic IPSPs in the adductor motoneurons, sharply fired during the expulsive phases of fictive coughing and sneezing, during which the adductor motoneu

Modulation of stomatogastric rhythms.

Neuromodulation by peptides and amines is a primary source of plasticity in the nervous system as it adapts the animal to an ever-changing environment. The crustacean stomatogastric nervous system is one of the premier systems to study neuromodulation and its effects on motor pattern generation at the cellular level. It contains the extensively modulated central pattern generators that drive the gastric mill (chewing) and pyloric (food filtering) rhythms. Neuromodulators affect all stages of neuronal processing in this system, from membrane currents and synaptic transmission in network neurons

Parasomnias in childhood.

Common childhood parasomnias, including those occurring at sleep onset and during rapid eye movement sleep or non-rapid eye movement sleep and their ontogeny are discussed. The events may be distressing to both the patient and family members. Stereotypic movements characteristic of some parasomnias most likely arise from disinhibition of subcortical central pattern generators. Genetic predisposition, an inherent instability of non-rapid eye movement sleep and underlying sleep disturbances such as obstructive sleep apnea may predispose to the activation of confusional arousals, sleep walking or

Long ascending propriospinal neurons provide flexible, context-specific control of interlimb coordination.

Within the cervical and lumbar spinal enlargements, central pattern generator (CPG) circuitry produces the rhythmic output necessary for limb coordination during locomotion. Long propriospinal neurons that inter-connect these CPGs are thought to secure hindlimb-forelimb coordination, ensuring that diagonal limb pairs move synchronously while the ipsilateral limb pairs move out-of-phase during stepping. Here, we show that silencing long ascending propriospinal neurons (LAPNs) that inter-connect the lumbar and cervical CPGs disrupts left-right limb coupling of each limb pair in the adult rat dur
