Preliminary lack of evidence for simian odour preferences of savanna populations of Anopheles gambiae and other malaria vectors.

The behavioural response to several culicine and anopheline mosquitoes to the odour of alternative hosts (human vs monkey) arranged in a choice set-up using odour-baited entry traps (OBETs) was assessed in a field experiment in south-eastern Senegal. The experimental protocol followed procedures analogous to those adopted in olfactometer laboratory tests. Two adult Cercopithecus aethiops and a child of similar mass slept inside separate tents and their odours were drawn to each one of two paired OBETs so that approaching mosquitoes could experience both odour-laden streams before "choosing" to

Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense infection in vervet monkeys. II. Provocation of the encephalitic late phase by treatment of infected monkeys.

Four out of 8 monkeys infected with Trypanosoma rhodesiense and treated with trypanocidal drugs at various intervals after infection (days 55-58, days 62-65, day 68) developed encephalitis. In 2 of these animals, killed 2 weeks after treatment, the encephalitis presenting was incipient; the other 2 monkeys died as a result of severe encephalitis a little more than 2 and 3 months after treatment, respectively. At the time of treatment, the animals revealed a parasitization of the CSF, but there were no clinical or neurological signs of any involvement of the central nervous system. The observat

The African green monkey as an alternate primate host for studying Machupo virus infection.

African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) are highly susceptible to Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (BHF). Six monkeys were inoculated with 1,000 plague-forming units of Machupo virus, the etiologic agent of BHF. They were observed and monitored for clinical signs, body temperature, viremia, hematologic changes, and virus neutralizing antibody. Onset of fever, anorexia, and depression was noted on days 3 to 6 postinoculation. These and other signs increased in severity and all monkeys died: 5 of 6 died by day 13 and one survived until day 24. The median time to death for the group was 12.5 day

Collection and Utilization of Animal Carcasses Associated with zoonotic Disease in Tshuapa District, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2012.

The collection and consumption of animal carcasses is a common activity in forested areas of the Congo River basin and creates sustainability, conservation, and health concerns. Residents of the Tshuapa District reported collecting the remains of 5,878 animals from >30 species when surveyed about their wildlife consumption habits. Carcasses were discovered in varying degrees of decomposition and were often consumed at home or sold in local markets. The most commonly collected animals were Cricetomys gambianus (Northern giant pouched rat), Cercopithecus ascanius (red-tailed monkey), and Heliosc

[Residual neurovirulence of the chimera of Langat and Denge-4 flaviviruses in intracerebral infection of monkeys].

The residual neurovirulence of the previously obtained chimeric virus Tp21/DEN4, containing the RNA region encoding the pre M and E structural enzymes, strain Tp21, virus Langat, and the remaining part of the genome from the Denge 4 virus, was studied in experiments with monkeys Cercopithecus aethiops involving the intracerebral administration of the virus. The tick-borne encephalitis virus, strain Absettarov, was used as positive control. A comparative analysis of the experimental and published data showed the chimeric virus to be less virulent by its degree of morphological affection in the

A regional reconnaissance on yellow fever in the Sudan; with special reference to primate hosts.

Neutralization-tests with yellow fever virus performed on 666 human sera collected in the southern Sudan imply that yellow fever is still endemic south of the 10th parallel, in the south-west border of the Nuba Mountains, and in the plains west of the Nuba Mountains as far north as El Muglad. Similar tests on bloods from 110 primates revealed a high rate of immunity among both baboons (Papio sp.) (94%) and grivet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) (77%), and a very low rate (1 in 56) among galagos (Galago senegalensis). It would therefore appear that, in contrast to the baboon and the grivet mon

Analysis of the effect of Sphingomyelinase on rubellavirus infectivity in two cell lines.

Rubella is a mildly contagious disease characterized by low-grade fever and a morbilliform rash caused by the rubella virus (RuV). Viruses often use cellular phospholipids for infection. We studied the roles of cellular sphingomyelin in RuV infection. Treatment of cells with sphingomyelinase (SMase) inhibited RuV infection in rabbit kidney-derived RK13 cells and African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) kidney-derived Vero cells. Our data further demonstrated that RuV used cellular sphingomyelin and cholesterol for its binding to cells and membrane fusion at the step of virus entry. Detail

Microscopic organization of the ligamenta flava in Cercopithecinae.

The ligamenta flava have been investigated in Cercopithecus pygerythrus (vervet monkey) and C. mitis (blue monkey) at various levels of the vertebral column. It has been shown that in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions the topography of these ligaments differs. The cervical ligamenta flava do not extend over the intervertebral joints, while in the thoracic and lumbar regions they reinforce and fuse with the capsule. The ligamenta flava from T4 to S1 replace the interspinous ligaments by extending into the interspinous space. The ligamenta flava consist mostly of interwoven layers of ela

Leishmania aethiopica: experimental infections in non-human primates.

Six Cercopithecus aethiops monkeys, 4 Theropithecus gelada baboons and 2 Papio anubis baboons were infected using Leishmania aethiopica isolates originating either from localized (LCL) or diffuse (DCL) cutaneous leishmaniasis patients. The history of lesions in 4 C. aethiops monkeys infected by LCL strains mimicked the process in human LCL patients. Infection of 2 C. aethiops monkeys using a DCL strain resulted in localized, non-ulcerative, self-healing nodular lesions. Such lesions were also observed in 2 T. gelada baboons infected by LCL strains. Active lesions and healing in C. aethiops and

Phylogenetic, paleodemographic, and taphonomic implications of Victoriapithecus deciduous teeth from Maboko, Kenya.

More than 240 milk teeth of Victoriapithecus macinnesi, representing all elements of the deciduous dentition, are described. Their morphology is intermediate between that of hominoids and cercopithecids. Unlike colobine and cercopithecine milk teeth, Victoriapithecus dp3s, dp4s, and at least 7 (14%) dp4s lack transverse distal loph(id)s and are not bilophodont. Victoriapithecus also differs from cercopithecids in having less elongated deciduous premolars, a dp3 metacone set mesial to a very small hypocone, a dp4 crista obliqua, and a dp4 hypoconulid. Influence of habitat and seasonal variation on wild mammal diversity and distribution with special reference to the Trypanosoma brucei gambiense host-reservoir in Bipindi (Cameroon).

To evaluate the role of wildlife in the resurgence and perenisation of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), we investigated the influence of habitat and seasonal variations on the diversity and spatial distribution of wild mammals, with special reference to those recognised as potential host-reservoirs of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in Bipindi (southwestern Cameroon). To achieve this, we carried out transect surveys in four habitat types over two years. A total of 31 mammal species were recorded, of which 14 occurred in the undisturbed forest, 9 in cocoa plantations, 11 in farmlands and 11 in

Ductal plate malformation in a nonhuman primate.

During necropsy of a 6-year-old, male African Green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops), multifocal pale, white to tan areas, 1-2 cm in diameter, were noted in the right lateral lobe, medial lobe, and capsular surface of the liver. Light microscopic examination of the liver revealed numerous spindle cells dispersed within interconnecting, broad bands of collagen, up to 200 microm in width, which often spanned and connected portal areas. A diagnosis of hepatic ductal plate malformation, most closely resembling congenital hepatic fibrosis with von Meyenburg complexes, was made. Few cases of ductal p

Pulp reactions to silicate cement in teeth with healing pulpitis.

Unlined silicate restorations were placed in intact and experimentally altered monkey, teeth. Pulpitis had been induced experimentally by sealing soft carious human dentin in Class V cavities with amalgam for 7 d. These fillings were then removed and healing allowed by inserting zinc oxide/eugenol cement. A protective effect of the secondary dentin in teeth with healing pulpitis could be demonstrated in short-term experiments. After a 1-month observation period no difference in response to silicate cement could be found between intact and experimentally altered pulps, both groups exhibiting no

Cross-species transmission of simian foamy virus to humans in rural Gabon, Central Africa.

In order to characterize simian foamy retroviruses (SFVs) in wild-born nonhuman primates (NHPs) in Gabon and to investigate cross-species transmission to humans, we obtained 497 NHP samples, composed of 286 blood and 211 tissue (bush meat) samples. Anti-SFV antibodies were found in 31 of 286 plasma samples (10.5%). The integrase gene sequence was found in 38/497 samples, including both blood and tissue samples, with novel SFVs in several Cercopithecus species. Of the 78 humans, mostly hunters, who had been bitten or scratched by NHPs, 19 were SFV seropositive, with 15 cases confirmed by PCR. A

Experimental extra-follicular histogenesis of follicular cysts.

An animal model has been developed in which implantation cysts have been produced very close to developing teeth within the jaws of Vervet monkeys. Various deciduous teeth were extracted from both the maxilla and the mandible of 6 young Vervet monkeys. After 4 weeks, full thickness mucoperiosteal flaps were raised in these areas, up to 6 recipient sites were prepared in each monkey by drilling holes in the alveolar bone and small pieces of autogenous palatal mucosa were placed in these graft recipient sites. One monkey was killed after 5, 8, 22 and 25 weeks respectively and 2 after 52 weeks. O

Origin of HTLV-1 in hunters of nonhuman primates in Central Africa.

Of 78 Gabonese individuals who had received bites from nonhuman primates (NHPs) while hunting, 7 were infected with human T lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1). Five had been bitten by gorillas and were infected with subtype B strains; however, a 12-year-old girl who was severely bitten by a Cercopithecus nictitans was infected with a subtype D strain that was closely related to the simian T lymphotropic virus (STLV-1) that infects this monkey species.
