Non-motoneurons in the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei projecting to the cerebellar flocculus in the cat. A fluorescent double-labelling and WGA-HRP study.

The cerebellar projection from the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei was studied in the cat by means of retrograde axonal transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase and fluorescent tracers. The feline facial nucleus was cytoarchitectonically subdivided into ventromedial, ventrolateral, lateral, dorsal, intermediate and medial divisions (see Papez 1927), and the motor trigeminal nucleus into medial, ventral, intermediate, lateral and dorsal divisions. The neurons in the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei were classified as small (ovoid to round cells with a maximum diameter of t

Projections from Regions of the Cerebellar Nuclei Receiving Jaw Muscle Proprioceptive Signals to Trigeminal Motoneurons and Their Premotoneurons in the Rat Pons and Medulla.

The cerebellum plays a crucial role in sensorimotor control through cerebellofugal projections from the cerebellar nuclei. However, little is known about the cerebellofugal projection features involved in jaw sensorimotor control, although the dorsolateral parts of the interposed cerebellar nucleus (IntDL) and medial cerebellar nucleus (MedDL) do receive proprioceptive signals bilaterally from rat jaw-closing muscle spindles (JCMSs). This study aimed to detail the cerebellofugal projection features involved in jaw sensorimotor control. Anterograde tracer was injected into regions of the rat In

Postinfectious Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome in a 41-Year-Old Patient-Visualizing Hyperactivation in Deep Cerebellar Nuclei by Cerebral [(18) F]-FDG- PET.

A 41-year-old woman presented with acute onset headache, vertigo, nausea, and gait disorder, initially interpreted as a common cold. Within 2 weeks, she developed a severe opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome with truncal ataxia. Cerebrospinal fluid examination and serological findings suggested a recent infection with Coxsackie B3 virus. [(18) F]-FDG-PET proved to be the only imaging tool to identify the underlying pathology depicting hyperactivation in the vestibulo- and spinocerebellum as well as hyperactivation of the ocular muscles. At the clinical follow-up 4 months later, the patient's symptom

[An autopsied case of paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome (limbic encephalitis, cerebellar degeneration, and pseudohypertrophy in the inferior olivary nuclei) associated with T cell lymphoma].

We describe a patient with paraneoplastic neurologic syndrome confirmed on postmortem examination. This 42-year-old man was admitted due to general fatigue, emaciation and acute-onset disorientation. Neurological examination revealed disorientation, moderate cognitive impairment, cerebellar ataxia, bilateral limitations and nystagmus in all directions during external ocular movement, swallowing disorder, bilateral Babinski sign, sensory disturbance in the distal parts of all extremities, and Romberg's sign. T-cell lymphoma was diagnosed following biopsy of the cervical lymph node. Neurological

Keratan sulfate proteoglycan is not expressed in human fetal cerebellar system except pontine nuclei and transitory vermal septa or in fasciculi caudal to the internal capsule.

We determined spatial/temporal expression of keratan sulfate proteoglycan (KS) in the developing cerebellar system, fasciculi, and dysgeneses. KS is an extracellular molecule secreted by astrocytes that forms a template for neuroblastic migration and axonal fascicles and creates perineural nets. We studied KS immunoreactivity in cerebellar cortex, deep cerebellar, inferior olivary, red and pontine nuclei, and white matter of 25 control human fetuses 12-41 weeks gestation and 16 cerebellar dysgeneses. Dentate, inferior olivary, and red nuclei were nonreactive at all ages. Pontine nuclei were po

Radiographic Findings of Evolving Sequelae of Cerebellar, Hippocampal, and Basal Nuclei Transient Edema With Restricted Diffusion (CHANTER) Syndrome in a 37-Year-Old Patient.

Cerebellar, Hippocampal, and Basal Nuclei Transient Edema with Restricted Diffusion (CHANTER) syndrome is a recently recognized distinct clinicoradiographic pattern of neurologic injury occurring most commonly following polysubstance or opioid abuse. Patients present acutely with unresponsiveness or coma. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrates key findings, including bilateral diffusion restriction in the cerebellar cortices and hippocampi and variable diffusion restriction in the basal ganglia. Additionally, cerebellar cytotoxic edema can exert a mass effect on the adjacent fourth ventr

Opioid-associated amnestic syndrome (OAS) following cerebellar hippocampal and basal nuclei transient edema with restricted diffusion (CHANTER) syndrome triggered by opioid overdose: A case report.

Cerebellar, Hippocampal, and Basal Nuclei Transient Edema with Restricted diffusion (CHANTER) syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by reversible cytotoxic edema involving the cerebellum, hippocampi, and basal nuclei after opioid intoxication. Opioid-associated amnestic syndrome (OAS), in contrast, is clinically characterized by persistent anterograde amnesia accompanied by bilateral hippocampal lesions. We present a 20-year-old patient found in deep coma with suspected opioid overdose. Despite the negative urine opioid screen, typical magnetic resonance (MR) findings led to a dia

Deep Cerebellar Nuclei Functional Connectivity with Cerebral Cortex in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy With and Without Focal to Bilateral Tonic-Clonic Seizures: a Resting-State fMRI Study.

We aimed to explore the altered functional connectivity patterns within cerebello-cerebral circuits in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients with and without focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS). Forty-two patients with unilateral TLE (21 with and 21 without FBTCS) and 22 healthy controls were recruited. We chose deep cerebellar nuclei as seed regions, calculated static and dynamic functional connectivity (sFC and dFC) in the patients with and without FBTCS and healthy controls, and compared sFC and dFC among the three groups. Correlation analyses were used to assess relationships

A Study on Potential Sources of Perineuronal Net-Associated Sema3A in Cerebellar Nuclei Reveals Toxicity of Non-Invasive AAV-Mediated Cre Expression in the Central Nervous System.

Semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) is an axon guidance molecule, which is also abundant in the adult central nervous system (CNS), particularly in perineuronal nets (PNNs). PNNs are extracellular matrix structures that restrict plasticity. The cellular sources of Sema3A in PNNs are unknown. Most Sema3A-bearing neurons do not express Sema3A mRNA, suggesting that Sema3A may be released from other neurons. Another potential source of Sema3A is the choroid plexus. To identify sources of PNN-associated Sema3A, we focused on the cerebellar nuclei, which contain Sema3A+ PNNs. Cerebellar nuclei neurons receive pr

Steady-state Purkinje cell activity has limited predictive power for cerebellar output in disease.

Cerebellar dysfunction can cause ataxia, dystonia, and tremor. Cerebellar nuclei neurons, the main cerebellar output neurons, exhibit distinct spike patterns in mouse models for different movement disorders. However nuclei spike pattern changes often arise from misfiring, miswiring, or degenerating Purkinje cells, which form the predominant input onto nuclei cells. It is often assumed that changes in Purkinje cell spike patterns cause inverse changes in nuclei cell spike patterns because Purkinje cells form GABAergic synapses onto cerebellar nuclei cells. We test this hypothesis by investigati

Cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis in a prosimian primate (Galago) and the tree shrew (Tupaia).

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

Cerebellar GABA Change during Visuomotor Adaptation Relates to Adaptation Performance and Cerebellar Network Connectivity: A Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging Study.

Motor adaptation is crucial for performing accurate movements in a changing environment and relies on the cerebellum. Although cerebellar involvement has been well characterized, the neurochemical changes in the cerebellum underpinning human motor adaptation remain unknown. We used a novel magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) technique to measure changes in the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the human cerebellum during visuomotor adaptation. Participants (n = 17, six female) used their right hand to adapt to a rotated cursor in the scanner, compared with a control task requirin

Distribution of external cuneate nucleus afferents to the cerebellum: I. Notes on the projections from the main cuneate and other adjacent nuclei. An experimental study with radioactive tracers in the cat.

Transport of radioactive leucine was used to demonstrate cerebellar projections from the external cuneate nucleus (NCE) and from adjacent portions of the main cuneate nucleus (NC), of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (N.tr.sp.V) and of the vestibular nuclei. Projections from NCE and NC in part terminate over exclusive regions and in part overlap. After injections limited to NCE, labeling is found in all regions of the anterior lobe and lobule VI, in vermal lobules VII, VIII, and IX, and in medial regions of central folia of the paramedian lobule. Afferents from NC are observed in intermediate and

The Discovery of the Monoaminergic Innervation of the Cerebellum: Convergence of Divergent and Point-to-Point Systems.

This Cerebellar Classic highlights the landmark discovery of the innervation of the cerebellar cortex and cerebellar nuclei by noradrenergic and serotoninergic axons emanating, respectively, from the locus coeruleus and the raphé nuclei. Since then, modulation of the activity of cerebellar neurons by the monoamine systems has been studied extensively, as well as their reorganization and modifications during development, plasticity, and disease. The discovery of noradrenergic and serotoninergic innervation of the cerebellum has been a crucial step in understanding the neurochemical relationship

Single axonal characterization of trigeminocerebellar projection patterns in the mouse.

The cerebellar projection from the trigeminal nuclear complex is one of the major populations of the cerebellar inputs. Although this projection is essential in cerebellar functional processing and organization, its morphological organization has not been systematically clarified. The present study addressed this issue by lobule-specific retrograde neuronal labeling and single axonal reconstruction with anterograde labeling. The cerebellar projection arose mainly from the interpolaris subdivision of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (Sp5I) and the principal trigeminal sensory nucleus (Pr5). Althou

Cerebellar MR changes in patients with olivary hypertrophic degeneration.

PURPOSE: To describe MR changes in the cerebellar cortex and the dentate nucleus in patients with inferior olivary nucleus hypertrophy. METHODS: MR scans of 11 patients with palatal myoclonus were reviewed. Among them, we selected 5 cases that showed lesions in the central tegmental tract and the ipsilateral inferior olivary nucleus. We evaluated MR changes of the cerebellar cortices and dentate nuclei contralateral to the affected inferior olivary nuclei. Evaluation was performed by side-to-side comparison in each case. Six cases were excluded, because comparison of the cerebellar hemisphere
