INTRODUCTION: The human cerebellum emerges as a posterior brain structure integrating neural networks for sensorimotor, cognitive, and emotional processing across the lifespan. Developmental studies of the cerebellar anatomy and function are scant. We examine age-dependent MRI morphometry of the anterior cerebellar vermis, lobules I-V and posterior neocortical lobules VI-VII and their relationship to sensorimotor and cognitive functions.
METHODS: Typically developing children (TDC; n=38; age 9-15) and healthy adults (HAC; n=31; 18-40) participated in high-resolution MRI. Rigorous anatomically

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are a core feature of early schizophrenia. However, the pathological foundations underlying cognitive deficits are still unknown. The present study examined the association between gray matter density and cognitive deficits in first-episode schizophrenia.
METHOD: Structural magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was performed in 34 first-episode schizophrenia patients and 21 healthy controls. Patients were divided into two subgroups according to working memory task performance. The three groups were well matched for age, gender, and education, and the two patie

Penetrating non-missile orbito cranial injuries are rare in a civilian pediatric setting. We describe a case of a trans-orbital penetration by a wooden chopstick deep down into the cerebellar vermis detected at neuroradiological examination in a child presenting for head injury. The foreign body was successfully pulled out in one piece surgically.

The developing fetal brain is one of the most susceptible organs to irradiation insult. Prenatal irradiation-induced abnormalities in the cerebrum have been well examined in mouse fetuses. However, little information on abnormalities in the cerebellum caused by irradiation is available. Moreover, few reports have examined the chronological changes of the brain from the prenatal to the postnatal period. To analyze the chronological changes induced by irradiation, we exposed pregnant mice to gamma-ray irradiation on embryonic day 13.5 (E13.5) and investigated the histopathology of the cerebellum

Recent research has revealed significant relationships between the vermian regions of the cerebellum and cognitive functions typically associated with prefrontal lobe function. These relationships are believed to be supported by anatomical connections between the distant brain regions. Recent evidence also suggests that age-related reductions in the posterior vermis are associated with age-related decline in frontal lobe cognitive functions, but these studies did not consider concomitant age-related atrophy of the prefrontal lobes. In the present study we addressed this issue by examining cogn

BACKGROUND: Cumulative evidence suggests the cerebellum is involved in cognition and may be important in the pathoetiology of schizophrenia. Functional imaging studies have identified a possible neural circuit that includes the cerebellum and may be abnormal in patients with schizophrenia, manifesting as a fundamental cognitive deficit conceptualized as cognitive dysmetria. To explore the role of the cerebellum in cognitive dysfunction and schizophrenia, this study was designed to evaluate the morphology of the cerebellar vermis, its relationship to other cortical areas, and to cognitive funct

Agenesis of the cerebellar vermis with fusion of the dentate nuclei and cerebellar hemispheres (rhombencephalosynapsis) is a rare cerebral malformation. We report the case of a 7-h-old girl whose mother had taken the drug phencyclidine during the first 6 weeks of pregnancy. Absence of septum pellucidum, hypoplasia of the commissural system, optic nerves, chiasm and tracts, moderate hydrocephalus, and agenesis of the posterior lobe of the pituitary were also found. Extracranial congenital anomalies involved the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, and musculoskeletal systems. Death was seconda

The spinal, trigeminal and cortical climbing fibre projection to the lateral vermis of the cerebellar anterior lobe in the cat has been investigated. The b zone, which occupies a one mm wide band in the lateral vermis, receives a somatotopically arranged input. Successively more rostral segments (tail, hindlimb, thorax, forelimb and trigeminal nerves) project to successively more medial microzones. The b zone receives an input through each of three spino-olivocerebellar paths (SOCPs) ascending in the ventral, dorsal and dorsolateral funiculi (VF, DF and DLF). In the b zone, the hindlimb input

Reduced fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling from the mid-hindbrain or isthmus organizer (IsO) during early embryonic development results in hypoplasia of the midbrain and cerebellar vermis. We previously reported evidence for reduced Fgf8 expression and FGF signaling in the mid-hindbrain region of embryos heterozygous for Chd7, the gene mutated in CHARGE (Coloboma, Heart defects, choanal Atresia, Retarded growth and development, Genitourinary anomalies and Ear defects) syndrome. However, Chd7+/- animals only exhibit mild cerebellar vermis anomalies. As homozygous deletion of Chd7 is embry

The generation of adaptive defensive behaviors in response to predator threats requires the integration of sensory inputs by neural circuits to shape context-appropriate motor outputs. While the cerebellum is increasingly recognized as a contributor to non-motor behaviors, its role in regulating innate fear behaviors is only beginning to be recognized. For example, it is unclear whether and how cerebellar activity influences both the expression and experience-dependent habituation of defensive responses to ethologically relevant stimuli. Here, we examine how manipulation of cerebellar output a

To reveal the molecular regulatory differences in physiological adaptations of pigeons with different breeding objectives, this study compared the transcriptomic differences in the hearts and cerebellar vermis of homing pigeons (HP) and meat pigeons (MP). Phenotypic analysis showed that the heart index of HP was significantly higher than that of MP, which helps enhance functions such as blood circulation, supporting the metabolic demands for long-duration activity. However, no significant differences were observed in the cerebellar vermis indices. Transcriptomic analysis identified 162 differe

The prepositus hypoglossi nucleus (PHN), involved in horizontal gaze control, contributes to this function via cooperation with the vestibulocerebellum (VC). Furthermore, some PHN neurons have been observed to project to cerebellar regions outside the VC. We previously reported a neuronal population in the ventral caudal PHN that projects to lobules III-V of the anterior vermis or to the cerebellar hemispheric crus. Because the properties of these neurons have not been clarified, this study aimed to determine their localization, projections, and electrophysiological and morphological character

Intracranial teratoma, a subtype of non-germinomatous germ cell tumors, is rare in adults. Clinical presentation of intracranial teratomas varies according to where they grow. In particular, cases of spontaneous ruptures of intracranial teratoma are sporadic. This study reports the case of an adult with a spontaneously ruptured mature teratoma in the cerebellar vermis, which was comorbid with a dermal sinus tract and subcutaneous lipoma. Before surgery, because the images were atypical of a teratoma, the patient was misdiagnosed as having vascular malformation rupture and bleeding in the cereb

In term neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), cerebellar injury is becoming more and more acknowledged. Animal studies demonstrated that Purkinje cells (PCs) are especially vulnerable for hypoxic-ischemic injury. In neonates, however, the extent and pattern of PC injury has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to characterize the morphology and distribution of PCs in the cerebellar vermis of term born neonates with HIE. Twenty-two term born neonates with severe HIE, several of which received therapeutic hypothermia, who underwent post-mortem autopsy of the brain incl

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

BACKGROUND: The neonatal changes of corpus callosum or cerebellar volume in preterm infants have been shown to link with abnormal mentality and motor disability in early childhood. This study aims to predict the long-term neurological outcomes by measuring these changes on neonatal brain ultrasound in preterm infants.
METHODS: Our cohort consisted of infants aged below 32 weeks' gestation with very low birth body weights who completed neuro-assessments at 5 years of age. Corpus callosum or cerebellar vermis were measured at 28-30 weeks and at 37-40 weeks gestational age in premature infants w

Parallel fibers (PFs) in the cerebellar cortex are involved in a series of coordinated responses in the fear conditioning paradigm induced by footshock. However, whether footshock can activate cerebellar climbing fibers (CFs) remains unclear. In this study, we recorded calcium (Ca2+) activity in CFs by optical fiber photometry in the cerebellar vermis lobule IV/V of freely moving mice with footshock stimulation. We found that the activation of CFs in the lobule IV/V was highly correlated with footshock stimulation but not with the sound stimulation used as a control. This result suggests that

PURPOSE: To obtain three-dimensional ultrasonic (3D US) structural details and biometrics of the fetal cerebellar vermis and evaluate the value of developmental and malformation identification.
METHODS: The 3D US minute structure of the fetal cerebellar vermis in mid-sagittal view was detected in normal fetuses (n = 438; 16-41 weeks). Biometric sizes were measured to establish the stage-specific norms and reproducibility analysis. Additionally, 28 fetuses with suspected abnormal posterior fossa contents were assessed to analyze the clinical value.
RESULTS: The minute structure of normal fetu

BACKGROUND: With the gradual deepening of the aging of the population, the closely related problem of frailty in older people is becoming increasingly prominent. Frailty can increase the risk of bodily damage and adverse health outcomes such as falls, disabilities, hospitalizations, institutionalization, and death. Intermittent theta burst stimulation is a special stimulation mode of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, which can enhance synaptic transmission by mimicking cortical theta rhythms. Some previous studies have suggested that intermittent theta burst stimulation is effectiv
