[Effect of nootropil on the ultrastructure of the cerebral cortex of the aged rat].

The brain cortex was studied in 7 Wistar rats aged 25-35 months. Rats receiving nootropil (piracetam) showed intracellular regeneration (enrichment of neuronal nuclei for chromatin, increased degree of plication of nuclear membrane, nucleolar hypertrophy, increase in the number of cellular organellae which created a picture of perinuclear hyperchromatosis). Another important effect of nootropil was dramatic reduction of hydropsy of the neural tissue. Nootropil use was also associated with the development and strengthening of the compensatory/adaptive reaction expressed on the morphological lev

Localization of function in the cerebral cortex. Past, present and future.

At a famous meeting of the International Medical Congress held in London on August 4, 1881 Goltz of Strassburg (as it was then spelt) confronted Ferrier of London on the subject of the localization of function in the cerebral cortex. In the first part of this paper the events of that meeting are recalled. Goltz was reluctant to accept the idea of localization because of the restitution of function after injury to the cortex, and because of the general rather than specific residual disabilities of his lesioned dogs. On the other hand, Ferrier's monkeys with cortical lesions demonstrated convinc

Interaction of visceral and somatic afferent systems in the cerebral cortex.

Using the method of evoked potentials on chloralose-anesthetized and suxamethonium-immobilized cats, a comparative study was made of the effects of interaction of somatic and visceral afferent systems in the second somatosensory area and in the parietal cortex of the brain. It was found that a common property of the interaction of the two afferent systems is an inhibition of the second response irrespective of which of the systems is activated first. Fairly prolonged inhibition was noted in the association region of the parietal cortex. Preliminary stimulation of visceral nerves caused less pr

Functional characterization of types of plasma membranes in cerebral cortex.

The cerebral cortex of normal oxygenated and of asphyxiated mice has been studied by freeze-fracturing technique with a twofold purpose. First, to investigate changes, if any, in the molecular organization of the plasma membrane of any specific cell type(s) that could be correlated with permeability changes thought to take place as a consequence of asphyxiation. Secondly, to attempt characterization of plasma membranes on the basis of the organization of their fractured faces. The decrease in the extracellular material in asphyxiated cerebral cortex seen in electron micrographs of thin section

Somatosensory evoked potentials in rat cerebral cortex before and after middle cerebral artery occlusion.

We recorded somatosensory evoked potentials in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats before and after middle cerebral artery occlusion. Trigeminal (vibrissae), median (forelimb), and sciatic (hind limb) nerve stimuli produced consistent, robust, and sharply localized responses in the trigeminal, forelimb, and hind limb regions of the somatosensory cortex of 18 rats. These regions are situated at sequentially greater distances from the center of infarcts produced by middle cerebral artery occlusion. In eight rats, occlusion 1-2 mm below the rhinal fissure abolished somatosensory evoked potentials in

Loss of Slc35a2 alters development of the mouse cerebral cortex.

Brain somatic variants in SLC35A2 are associated with clinically drug-resistant epilepsy and developmental brain malformations, including mild malformation of cortical development with oligodendroglial hyperplasia in epilepsy (MOGHE). SLC35A2 encodes a uridine diphosphate galactose translocator that is essential for protein glycosylation; however, the neurodevelopmental mechanisms by which SLC35A2 disruption leads to clinical and histopathological features remain unspecified. We hypothesized that focal knockout (KO) or knockdown (KD) of Slc35a2 in the developing mouse cortex would disrupt cere

[Development of Inter-areal Association Projections in the Cerebral Cortex].

Direct projections between functional areas within the ipsilateral hemisphere (association projections) play a key role in higher cognitive functions. Deficits in these circuits are correlated with various pathological conditions including developmental disorders. We investigated the development of association projections in the mouse neocortex using single-neuron resolution imaging and observed that these were formed as interstitial collaterals that originate as buds from callosal projections of the same neurons. In this review, we describe our findings with regard to the development of assoc

A Global Multiregional Proteomic Map of the Human Cerebral Cortex.

The Brodmann area (BA)-based map is one of the most widely used cortical maps for studies of human brain functions and in clinical practice; however, the molecular architecture of BAs remains unknown. The present study provided a global multiregional proteomic map of the human cerebral cortex by analyzing 29 BAs. These 29 BAs were grouped into 6 clusters based on similarities in proteomic patterns: the motor and sensory cluster, vision cluster, auditory and Broca's area cluster, Wernicke's area cluster, cingulate cortex cluster, and heterogeneous function cluster. We identified 474 cluster-spe

Anidulafungin and Micafungin Concentrations in Cerebrospinal Fluid and in Cerebral Cortex.

Anidulafungin and micafungin were quantified in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of critically ill adults and in cerebral cortex of deceased patients. In CSF, anidulafungin levels (<0.01 to 0.66 μg/ml) and micafungin levels (<0.01 to 0.16 μg/ml) were lower than those in plasma concentrations (0.77 to 5.07 and 1.21 to 8.70 μg/ml, respectively) drawn simultaneously. In cerebral cortex, anidulafungin and micafungin levels were 0.21 to 2.34 and 0.18 to 2.88 μg/g, respectively. Thus, MIC values of several pathogenic Candida strains exceed concentrations in CSF and in brain.

Pathoarchitectonics of the cerebral cortex in chorea-acanthocytosis and Huntington's disease.

AIMS: Quantitative estimation of cortical neurone loss in cases with chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) and its impact on laminar composition. METHODS: We used unbiased stereological tools to estimate the degree of cortical pathology in serial gallocyanin-stained brain sections through the complete hemispheres of three subjects with genetically verified ChAc and a range of disease durations. We compared these results with our previous data of five Huntington's disease (HD) and five control cases. Pathoarchitectonic changes were exemplarily documented in TE1 of a 61-year-old female HD-, a 60-year-ol

Metabolic effects of perinatal asphyxia in the rat cerebral cortex.

We reported previously that intrauterine asphyxia acutely affects the rat hippocampus. For this reason, the early effects of this injury were studied in the cerebral cortex, immediately after hysterectomy (acute condition) or following a recovery period at normoxia (recovery condition). Lactacidemia and glycemia were determined, as well as glycogen levels in the muscle, liver and cortex. Cortical tissue was also used to assay the ATP levels and glutamate uptake. Asphyxiated pups exhibited bluish coloring, loss of movement, sporadic gasping and hypertonia. However, the appearance of the control

Differential diagnosis of restricted diffusion confined to the cerebral cortex.

Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) has become increasingly widely available over recent years and is recognized as a powerful tool in neuroimaging. It is primarily used to identify acute ischaemia in patients presenting with stroke because of the improved sensitivity it offers early in the course of the disease. DWI also contributes useful diagnostic information in a range of other conditions. In this review we describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of a number of conditions characterized by cortical diffusion restriction (CDR).

Evolution of cerebral cortex involvement in the acquisition of associative learning.

The presence of the c-Fos protein has been evidenced in the piriform cortex, subiculum, entorhinal and perirhinal cortices, and parietal and occipital cortices at different stages (Sessions 2, 4, and 6) in the acquisition of a trace conditioning in behaving rabbits. c-Fos immunostaining was also measured after a reminder (7th) session. c-Fos immunoreactivity increased significantly across conditioning on the contralateral side of the piriform, entorhinal, perirhinal, and parietal cortices as compared with the ipsilateral side of conditioned animals and the contralateral side of pseudo-conditio

Analysis of the cerebral cortex in holoprosencephaly with attention to the sylvian fissures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Analysis of specific features in the brain of patients with holoprosencephaly (HPE) may clarify normal and abnormal brain development and help predict outcomes for specific children. We assessed sulcal and gyral patterns of cerebral cortex in patients with HPE and developed a method of grading brain development. METHODS: Neuroimaging studies (75 MR imaging, 21 CT) of 96 patients with HPE were retrospectively reviewed, with specific attention paid to the cerebral cortex. Thickness of cortex, width of gyri, and depth of sulci were assessed subjectively and by measurement

Normal and abnormal neuronal migration in the developing cerebral cortex.

Neuronal migration is the critical cellular process which initiates histogenesis of cerebral cortex. Migration involves a series of complex cell interactions and transformation. After completing their final mitosis, neurons migrate from the ventricular zone into the cortical plate, and then establish neuronal lamina and settle onto the outermost layer, forming an "inside-out" gradient of maturation. This process is guided by radial glial fibers, requires proper receptors, ligands, other unknown extracellular factors, and local signaling to stop neuronal migration. This process is also highly s
